The Brilliance of the song Hotel California by the Eagles

Ranked #6,305 in Entertainment, #100,747 overall

This fantastic album, Hotel California was the first by the Eagles to feature Joe Walsh, who together with Don Felder created within the band a harder sound. You need to bear in mind that the Eagles were one of the most successful bands of the 1970s, with 5 No 1s, 14 top 40 hits and 4 chart-topping albums.

Indeed, in 2000, Hotel California was ranked among the ten best-selling albums of all time, the title track one of the most played tunes ever. Though most of the band were not Californians, fans closely identified the country- and folk-tinged sound that distinguished the group with the sun shine, though the boys in the band were happy to perform in more traditional rock & roll styles. This meant, of course, that over time work came to be seen as classic rock, ensuring that the Eagles would always have a perennial appeal to several generations of music fans.

The Eagles are, quite simply, synonymous with Southern California, and taking a good look at the land of hopes and dreams is what this superb album is all about. Classic, iconic, unforgettable are just three of the many words used to describe the title track, because from that wonderful, opening guitar riff, through beautifully cynical and vivid lyrics to the epic finale, this track is a force of nature.

This brilliant masterpiece of a song – number one single number three for the band -, won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1977, and I for one never tire of listening it, because somehow you always find something else within the meaning. There are other good songs on the album, like New Kid In Town and Life In The Fast Lane, both descriptive of the wild-child late 70s life-style, and the Last Resort relates the story tells of the band moving from the east coast out to California, but the title track is what makes this best-selling album so special.

I listen to the greatest hits of this iconic band often, but somehow always feel inclined to linger over Hotel California, usually playing it at least twice. No matter what I do, I cannot get this tune out of my head, and if that isn’t a mark of a truly great song, then I have no idea what is.

This is an excellent review. I must say, however, that I'm one of those people who actually liked side TWO of that album much better. I think I've just grown tired of this song because it's so overplayed. If only they could play "The Last Resort" half as much as "Hotel California" I'd be thrilled.

I have to agree with you on this lens, Tony. The Eagles as a band, or individually, are astonishing songs writers. I have all their music and many videos. When it comes to songwriting, the closest match I can think of is Dave Mathews Band. Nice lens.

Have seen the Eagles in concert numerous times, it never gets old even though they are getting older! Their performance is still top notch and one that I am grateful to have been witness to over the past four decades!
