The Christmas Box - The Mystery of Love

Richard Paul Evans wrote The Christmas Box as a loving gift to his daughters. It has quickly become a loving gift to all of us. The Christmas Box is a little book of love -- a delightful story of a young couple and a small child who move in to care for an older lady, Mary. Loving these characters is easy! You quickly feel you know them all very well, and you will enjoy their company during the holiday season.

This tiny book can be read aloud to your entire family. The little ones may wiggle and squirm, but the older children will never forget the message of the book. Enjoy this delightful gift, and get a few for your neighbors and friends.

The Christmas Box Music by Paul Cardall

Listen as you read.

Paul Cardall says, "I wrote this tune "Diamonds for Stones" a little over 10 years ago for author Richard Paul Evans' The Christmas Box. He commissioned music for his book and I was fortunate to sign with Narada. We released The Christmas Box CD in 1999. People always ask about this tune so I might as well throw a home-made video recording up on the channel."

And then, every Christmas after you read the Christmas Box, you will remember the story -- and be glad you read it.

A quote from the beginning of the story, The Christmas Box

"Whatever the reason, I find that with each passing Christmas the story of the Christmas Box is told less and needed more. So I record it now for all future generations to accept or dismiss as seems them good. As for me, I believe. And it is, after all, my story."

Richard's dreams begin....and the mystery....

"I don't recall the exact night when the dreams began. The angel dreams. It should be stated that I am a believer in angels, though not the picture-book kind with wings and harps. Such angelic accoutrements seemed as nonsensical to me as devils sporting horns and carrying pitchforks. To me, angel wings are merely symbolic of their role as divine messengers."

Richard Paul Evans on Wikipedia

Evans graduated from Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City. He graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Utah in 1984. While working as an advertising executive he wrote a Christmas story for his children. Unable to find a publisher or an agent, he self-published the work in 1993 as a paperback novella entitled The Christmas Box. He distributed it to book stores in his community.

The book became a local bestseller, prompting Evans to publish the book nationally. The next year The Christmas Box hit #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, inciting an auction for the publishing rights among the world's top publishing houses. Evans signed a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster, who paid Evans $4.2 million in an advance. Released in hardcover in 1995, The Christmas Box became the first book to simultaneously reach the number-one position on the New York Times bestseller list for both paperback and hardcover editions. That same year, the book was made into a television movie of the same title, starring Richard Thomas and Maureen O'Hara.

Richard Paul Evans (born October 11, 1962 in Salt Lake City, Utah) is an American author.

And as you finish the book, you will agree with Richard, as he says,

"And as long as the earth lives, and longer, that message will never die. Though the cold winds of life may put frost on the heart of many, that message alone will shelter the heart from life's storms. And for me, as long as I live, the magic inside the Christmas Box will never die.

It never will."

Amazon Review - Hallmark's warm, 1995 made-for-television movie The Christmas Box and its darker, 1996 prequel, Timepiece, are logically and delightfully paired in this DVD package. In the former, Richard Thomas plays Richard, a ski-shop owner consumed with work and unhappy about his family's insistence on sharing a lonely mansion with Mary, an icy, humorless widow (Maureen O'Hara). While Richard's wife and child develop loving ties with Mary, he suffers recurring dreams and grows convinced the house is haunted by a tragedy from the old woman's past. Timepiece jumps ahead 16 years from the resolution of that story, then takes us back to the 1940s, when Mary (Naomi Watts) and her late husband, David (Kevin Kilner), a wealthy arms supplier to America's war effort, marry and endure both a bogus murder trial and a crushing family loss. While it's wonderful to see O'Hara, Timepiece proves the grittier, more interesting film, helped mightily by a cast including James Earl Jones and Ellen Burstyn. --Tom Keogh
