The Christmas Tree Tradition

One of the most popular traditions associated with the Christmas season is the Christmas tree, also known as a Yule tree. Generally it is an evergreen tree, usually a type of Fir Tree, that is used and is decorated with bright lights and richly colored ornaments. Many people put up a tree during the days before or around Christmas.

If you want to learn more about the Christmas tree tradition, you've come to the right place. Take a cup coffee or tea and read on...

History of the Christmas Tree

Christmas timeIn older times and still in many places today, the putting up and taking down of a Christmas tree are done on certain dates.

The practice of setting up evergreen trees, along with the burning of a Yule log, originated during "pagan" times. This practice was associated with the Winter Solstice which is on, or about, the 21st of December.

The Christmas tree decorating practice was later made into a Christian practice after the Church decided to set December 25th as the birth of Jesus in order to supplant the old pagan celebration of the solstice.

Early Christmas Tree Traditions

girl and christmas treeIn these older traditions, Christmas trees were not brought in and decorated until Christmas Eve and left up for only twelve nights.

It was believed that it would bring ill luck to whoever would put up a tree up before or after these days. However, the commercialism of Christmas has resulted in trees being put up much earlier; as early as the first or second week in October.

Still, there are some traditions that suggest that Christmas trees should be kept up until the 2nd of February, which is the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, otherwise known as Candlemas. This is when the Christmas season is considered to be at it's end.

Choose your Christmas Tree carefully!

christmas treeToday Christmas trees no longer have to be the traditional live tree that has been cut down.

While some people still prefer a live tree, they find it to be wasteful and senseless to kill a tree simply to celebrate the holiday. For this reason most people prefer to use an artificial tree which will not dry out nor shed it's needles into the carpet and can be used repeatedly.

One can now buy an artificial Christmas tree that looks like a "real" one and keep it for many years.

Was at first a little concerned when box opened and the tree seemed *really* frosted (edging very close to tacky), but as tree went up, and branches spread - I could see the frosting was concentrated on the tips, making the overall appearance closer to the one in the picture here. Also, at first there seemed to be a lot of space between branches, but each main branch is composed of a bunch of smaller branches that are individually wired and need to be separated from each other. Once this job is done, the tree really starts looking beautiful. Plug in the lights, and the tree goes from beautiful to spectacular.
