A Gathering of Village Elders Assembled to Resolve Global Conflicts
The idea for the Global elders started in 1999 with a conversation between Peter Gabriel and Richard Branson. Their idea of The Elders was to create a new gathering of world leaders who will come together to guide and support our "global village."
For their model they looked to traditional village elders, trusted by their people to resolve conflict within their communities.
In 2001 Gabriel and Branson took their idea to Nelson Mandela who enthusiastically set out with the help of Graça Machel and Desmond Tutu to bring together the group of Elders you see here today.
