The Enzyme Factor Review discusses this Best Selling Book by Hiromi Shinya, M.D.

This is my Book Review of The Enzyme Factor with the subtitle (I'll keep you from looking for your magnifying glass) of "DIET FOR THE FUTURE that will prevent heart disease, cure cancer, stop type type 2 diabetes." It is a best selling book.written by one of the world's most famous physicians and surgeons.

This book is so enjoyable that anyone reading it will learn unusual health information, meet one down-to-earth doctor, and be amazed that Dr. Shinya actually practices what he preaches. Dr. Shinya reveals that he had not missed a day of work due to illness in 45 years as a doctor! If that does not impress the reader, then his claim that his patients have a Cancer Recurrence Rate of ZERO percent will impress almost anyone, including many medical doctors. I guess that gives him the right to use the words "cure cancer" in the subtitle of The Enzyme Factor and have credibility when revealing his many "health secrets" to the reader.

Why this Reviewer connects with Dr. Shinya

I am a Long Time "Health Nut" (even more so is Dr. Shinya, the author)

I have been researching health as a hobby for some 40 years. I once desired to live to be the oldest person on earth but, after meeting my wife who is older than me, I changed my goal to "live a long time and die healthy" ("healthy" meaning without disease). I read a lot and have read hundreds of books on health, sports, and related topics. In fact, I lost almost 200 health-related books in Hurricane Katrina. Quite frankly, many health books leave me disappointed if I do not do a little research (e.g., by reading a review such as this). This lens is a way in which I can perhaps help others from slogging through a boring book or reading one containing incorrect information.

I like to think "out of the box" so Dr. Hiromi Shinya really appeals to me. He invented colonoscopic surgery - that technique is named for him - and he was one of several inventors of the colonoscopy procedure. Moreover, he is a wonderfully caring human being. I am not a doctor, although my grandfather in Ireland was, like Dr. Shinya, both a physician and surgeon - so maybe I do have some health-seeking gene. Another reason I continue to enjoy The Enzyme Factor is because Dr. Shinya was born in Japan, a country in which my family and I once lived. In fact, I once worked in Tokyo, where Dr. Shinya practices about 6 months a year (the other 6 months he practices in New York). In fact, he is Japan's most famous physician.

The Enzyme Factor Overview

Author: Hirmomi Shinya, M.D.

Hiromi Shinya, M.D.

Dr. Shinya, the author (at right), is world famous. He has examined the stomach and intestines and taken the health history of 300,000 people (not a misprint!). Those people include Prime Ministers, Presidents, and celebrities, as well as hundreds of thousands of less well known people.

The front material and appendixes are wonderful, and the 4 chapters are power packed with material that is enjoyable, easy to read, and you feel like you are reading something your favorite uncle wrote, as opposed to a book written by a "superstar" medical doctor.

His basic idea is that enzymes are produced from "source enzymes" and death occurs when we run out of enzymes. In addition to a discussion of enzymes and how to get and conserve more of them, he discusses some of the most diverse and interesting subjects I have ever read in a medical-health type of book.

Unique Qualifications of the Author

(Hiromi Shinya, M.D.)

He is one of few physicians to do any of these things (and he has done them all):
  • Invent a Medical Procedure (the "Shinya Technique" is named for him)
He invented colonoscopic surgery and was the first person in the world to do non-invasive colon surgery. He is also one of several who pioneered the colonoscopy procedure which is so common today.
  • Examine over 300,000 patients including Prime Ministers, Presidents and celebrities
Examining their stomachs and intestines, plus taking their health history.
  • Practice medicine on 2 continents (in North America and Asia) in English and Japanese
He practices about half a year in Tokyo, Japan and half a year in New York City.
  • Develop a theory of Source ("Miracle") Enzymes
This is described in The Enzyme Factor
  • Contradict many other physicians as to dietary and lifestyle practices
He describes some Japanese healthy foods, but he also mentions that a few Japanese foods often considered healthy are actually not so healthy. He knows this from examination of the intestinal tracts of his Japanese and American patients. Unlike some physicians, he truly practices what he preaches - and states that he had never missed a day of work in over 45 years as a medical doctor.
  • Have patients with a Cancer Recurrence Rate of 0%
Over the years he has dropped this rate to zero; he states that his cancer patients will never get cancer again.

Readability of The Enzyme Factor

Hint: it's Super User-Friendly

Dr. Shina is a very humble man, despite the fact that he had been the first person in the world to perform certain medical procedures. However, his writing style is extremely readable - for all. Beyond that, his concern for mankind really comes across. His children had experienced some medical issues when young, and his wife died later on, making him really and truly reflect on the relationships between lifestyle, diet and health.

Since he practices medicine both in Japan and in the United States (about 6 months in each city, each year), he possesses an unusual wealth of wisdom but, more importantly, knows how to share it with the "average" reader. He is not into "PhD-speak." Rather, he writes in an easy-to-read manner that anyone can enjoy, breaking up each chapter into "bite size" pieces, usually a page or two each, and each piece has a sub-heading. Moreover, this author is so credible - he was in his early 70s when he wrote The Enzyme Factor and had not seen a doctor due to sickness since he was 19. He truly shares with the reader what he, himself, actually does to remain incredibly healthy.

Book Front Material

A wonderful starting point for the book - not to be missed

At the beginning of The Enzyme Factor the reader can enjoy about 10 pages of text which includes a Publisher's Note, followed by Dr. Shinya's Preface and Introduction. These front sections are quite interesting and allow the reader to get to know Dr. Shinya, and see why he is world famous. For example, in his Preface, Dr. Shinya confesses that his own wife died (she had lupus) "before I knew enough to help her." In his Introduction, Dr. Shinya writes in bold capitals:

THAT KEY, THE KEY TO A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE,
CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: ENZYMES

Chapters in the Book

The 4 Chapters contain MUCH more than is here

Here is a sampling of only a few of the many items in each chapter:
  • Chapter 1: Enzymes and Your Health - Misconceptions and Vital Truths

Dr. Shinya, although he writes that he is a gastrointestinal endoscopy specialist (my note: he is often considered the best one in the world), he believes that improving one's lifestyle is more important than surgery or medication. His writes that none of his patients have had to face cancer again. He discusses common myths about food (e.g., milk and yogurt, green tea and taking supplements - he may surprise the reader on these), the dangers of antacids, that drugs are alien to the body and are of limited value, and that heartburn is your body's warning signal. The bottom line, he states, is that It all comes down to source enzymes (which he also calls "miracle" enzymes).

  • Chapter 2: The Enzyme Factor Diet

Dr. Shinya tells the reader to eat food containing plenty of enzymes. He gives his ideas for an ideal meal and gives some dietary tips based on his own dietary lifestyle.

  • Chapter 3: Habits of the Rich and Healthy

Dr. Shinya writes that the majority of diseases are caused by habit, and not by heredity. He has some detailed explanations about what causes sleep apnea and how to eliminate it. He discusses multiple ideas such as power naps, his own daily routine, the value of moderation, properties of the best water as well as when to drink it.

  • Chapter 4: Pay Attention to Your "Script of Life"

Dr. Shinya decries "over specialization" in medicine, and writes "...there are only a few doctors who are willing to pay attention to the patient's whole body, because healthcare has become completely specialized." He talks about good and bad bacteria, tells how love activates your "miracle" enzyme and tells how a happy person will have a very active blood immune system, as revealed by blood test. It is refreshing to have a medical doctor telling the reader how important love is to health.

Appendixes

These are excellent sources of information

There are 3 of them, followed by an index. Their names are:
  • Dr. Shinya's 7 Golden Keys for Good Health (about 5 pages)

These include a good diet, good water, regular elimination, moderate exercise, adequate rest, breathing and meditation, and joy and love. He has some summary information on each, and they are covered in more detail through the book.

  • Recommended Dietary Habits (about 11 pages)

This is a summary of good health habits, some of which will be new to almost any reader.

  • Healing Foods (about 3 pages)

Many of these foods (e.g., maitake and kikurage), are not familiar to most Americans. He mentions locations in the world where they are found, which include Japan, China, Syria, Canada, Russia, and northern Scandinavia.

One healing "food" he includes (available in the U.S.) is Kangen Water which he says is "alkaline rich water (ph 8-9), and is considered the very best drinking water because of its incomparable powers of hydration, detoxification, and anti-oxidation."
