The Family Table | The Family Dinner Hour | Family Dinner Hour Resources

Ranked #6,451 in Parenting & Kids, #221,980 overall

Creating this special time during the family dinner hour is easier than you think.

It seems like a fading memory these days...everyone in the family gathered around the table for dinner and sharing themselves. With kids running to several activities and parents working longer hours, it's no wonder we can seem like a house of roomates just stopping by to change clothes and sleep.

Creating a special time for your family can be easier than you think.  You need to be flexible and a bit creative and just remember not all family mealtimes have to resemble the Cleavers.

Please stop by my guestbook below and let us know what you do to fit in family meals. I look foward to reading it.

The Family Table - Why Eating Together Is Important

Regular meals with the family are a good way to ensure that your child's daily nutritional requirements are met. Breakfast and dinner will give you a chance to incorporate the best of health foods at least twice a day so you don't have your child's empty stomach running on your mind. Kids are less likely to indulge in unhealthy snacking if they have had a satisfying regular family meal. You can make use of family meals to include raw fruits and vegetables thereby helping your kids to improve upon their metabolism.

Research has shown that children who take part regularly in family meals are more likely to have better eating habits, snack less on junk food and most importantly, are less likely to indulge in the use of marijuana, smoking or drinking alcohol. I believe this is do to the parents setting a good example with food (hopefully) and eating together can go a long way to keeping communication open.

Kitchen Table Conversations

By Cheryl Bassitt

Cheryl says,"the most important commitment is for families to agree to sit down with each other and meet at least once a week." The three very simple rules for a positive and meaningful family meeting are:

1. All electronics must be turned off during the family meeting
2. Don't shoot the duck - in other words, you can compliment or build upon another person's idea, but you cannot shoot it down.
3. Living a life above the line - this focuses on taking ownership and responsibility for your life by living with honesty and integrity

Providing this starting point for families is only the first step. Bassitt has taken it to the next level by creating a wipe-and-erase placemat to facilitate Kitchen Table Conversation Meetings with family members. This serves to keep the conversations on-track and positive.
