Living the Frugal Life!
Welcome! I've been living frugally for many years now. I'll admit that it wasn't always by choice, but it's something I've learned to love.
Frugal living doesn't have to be about living without. It's about recognizing what's important to you and doing everything you can to live a life in accordance with your values.
Be happy! Live frugal!
Why Live Frugally
Actually, there are many reasons to choose a frugal lifestyle. One of the biggest reasons that people choose to live frugally is that they are working towards saving money to reach a goal. That goal varies from person to person. Perhaps they are saving for retirement, for the down payment on a new home, or a trip around the world. Whatever their goals are, these people feel that the goal is worth living frugally for.
Some choose to live frugally in order to have something that may mean more to them--for example, so that one parent can stay home with the children or care for an elderly parent. To these people, being able to be there for family members is more important than the money they could earn if they are working.
Living frugally is often better for the environment. Frugal people have significantly less waste than those who are not frugal. They drive cars less and reuse things whenever possible. They also find that this makes them healthier. They are more likely to eat whole foods and homemade dishes than packaged convenience foods.
Many people start to live frugally because they have to, but once you start, it becomes a habit that's hard to break. You start to see how many things there are that you don't really need. Money can't buy happiness and these people have learned to live without much money and to be happy doing it.
Being frugal isn't a choice that's for everyone. But those who do choose frugality wouldn't live any other way.
Save Money at the Grocery Store
Food expenses are one of the major expenses that you really do have control over. Follow these tips to save money every time you go to the grocery store:Take a notebook. Use a notebook to record the every-day prices of items that you commonly purchase. When you do this, you'll have a clearer idea of how much you can save using coupons and when things really are a good deal. It also helps you to compare costs between different grocery stores.
Use coupons. Coupons can save you a lot of money in the long run. Check for items that you need and try to use them when that item is also on sale at the store.
Don't go hungry. If you do your grocery shopping while you are hungry, you are likely to buy extra food that you don't really need.
Make a list and only buy those things. Take a list to the store with you and stick to it. Don't buy extras just because they look good or are on sale.
Don't buy ready-to-eat or convenience foods. Prepackaged foods can be expensive. Save money by making everything from scratch.
Stick to the outer aisles. In most grocery stores, the outer aisles contain the items that are necessities while the inner aisles contain convenience or luxury foods. If you shop only the outside aisles, you'll be sure to not be tempted by extras.
Stock up on sales. When you see a good price on a food that your family often eats, stock up. That way you'll have many weeks' worth at the lower cost.
Don't take your kids with you. Kids can sneak things into your shopping cart when you're not looking. They also may ask for things that aren't on your list. Keep them at home and you won't have to deal with the pressure.
Review fliers. Try to have the grocery store send you their weekly fliers. Or check them out online. If you know what's going on sale, it makes it easier to plan your weekly menu and look for coupons which will complement the sales.
Buy in bulk. Whenever it's possible, buy in bulk. You can usually get a much better deal per piece if you are willing to buy in bulk. Some families even have an extra freezer so that they can stock up on frozen goods.
If you follow these steps, you will reduce your grocery bill in no time at all.

Ideas for Cheap Gifts
Cheap gifts don't have to seem cheap. If they come from the heart and are chosen specifically for the person receiving the gift, then they are always appreciated. It's when you're thoughtless about giving gifts that people don't like them, not when they are cheap!
The following gifts ideas are all less than $10 and will help show the person that you care about them:
Recipe in a jar. This is a popular frugal gift. Choose your favorite recipe for cookies or cake. Then mix up the dry ingredients and put them into a jar. Tie it with a pretty bow and attach a copy of the recipe. The receiver should only have to mix in a few extras (such as eggs or milk) and they'll have some delicious baked goods in no time.
Home baked goods. If you're a talented baker yourself, you can make something to give to the person. Cookies, cakes, or breads are always welcome. Make sure that you adhere to any dietary restrictions the person might have. A vegan or diabetic person, for example, will be pleased when you go the extra mile to make goodies that they can enjoy.
Local foods. Many regions are known for a specific food. These make excellent gifts for people who live out of town. Hawaii residents might give macadamia nuts while Vermont residents might give maple syrup. These gifts are usually less than $10 and are much appreciated.
Picture frame (with picture). A cheap picture frame can be much more special if you include a favorite picture of you with the receiver.
Magazine subscriptions. Magazine subscriptions are always a great gift. It's even more fun because it's like receiving 12 gifts. Note the different types of hobbies that the person has or what types of magazines you've seen them reading. Then look online for a cheap subscription.
A gift basket. Go to the dollar store and pick a couple of different gifts that you know the person will like. Try to get things that have a similar theme (like food or relaxing). Then put everything together in a basket. Many small gifts make a gift seem even better.
Everyone goes through times when they have to be more frugal, but we still want to give gifts to the people we love. Luckily, not all gifts have to be expensive. Your loved ones will appreciate the thought that goes into giving any gift.

- Great Lens! Lots to see and do. I love the video on the college students at the thrift store. My son learned thrift shopping from me, and he's always telling me about great stuff he gets at thrift stores. When I went to visit him at college his senior year, instead of taking me to a movie, we went to "Thrift City", and went crazy!

- Great lens! I'm also frugal to the bone, and love to share my frugality with others. I just grew up that way, and have been that way ever since, never even thought about it until it became "cool" to be frugal.
