The Golden Compass : The Book

The book was first published in the UK by Scholastic in 1995 under the title Northern Lights. However, the US edition was retitled The Golden Compass after the American publishers decided that the alethiometer, a divining instrument central to the plot, resembled a compass.

The book is the first part in a trilogy following the adventures of Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry as they travel through alternate universes in search of 'Dust' and in doing so, make the parallel journey from innocence to experience.

Pullman, an Oxford graduate and former teacher, was influenced heavily by Milton's Paradise Lost and William Blake and this is apparent in the name of the trilogy - His Dark Materials, which is made up of the three books, The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife & The Amber Spyglass.

At present, Pullman is working on a fourth book - The Book of Dust -which is a companion novel to His Dark Materials and is bridged by the short story in Lyra's Oxford. It is currently due to publish 2009.
