A Review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, or Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, as it is known in Britain, was a preteen-targeted masterpiece. She says she found the inspiration for the book while stalled on a train for several hours. Her four-eyed hero soon became the center of a worldwide phenomenon that entranced 9-7 year olds and adults alike.

The first book in the Harry Potter series begins with an air of mystery, as the reader very quickly learns that the Potters have been murdered. Harry is left with the Dursleys, his muggel (ie non-magical) relatives. His early life is a tortured existence, and we see Harry Potter often mistreated by his mother's sister and family. Their son is very much the favorite and young Potter lives in a cubby under the stairs under lock and key.

He's punished for the strange, magical events that take place when he is angry, but Harry does not know he is a wizard until the age of 11. The school where Harry is to soon live, Hogwart's Academy, begins by sending him a message of invitation via an owl. When his cruel uncle does not allow Harry to see the message, more owls, and soon a brood of owls begin delivering messages. However, Harry still does not learn of the message's contents until a visit on his 11th birthday by Hogwart's groundkeeper, Hagrid.

Hagrid is quite nearly a giant and he bursts down the door at the family's weekend getaway to bring Harry Potter a birthday cake (his first since his parent's death). Hagrid brings Harry to an enchanted area that is barred to Mugles.

This part of the movie and book are some of the most fun for Potter followers. The booming town market, staffed with all sort of magical creatures, most commonly wizards and witches, is a direct parallel to a normal marketplace. Here Harry is able to withdraw funds from his bank account, lovingly provided by his dead parents, Lily and James Potter. He spends his money buying school books, a wand, an owl (Hegrid) and the entire contents of the train's candy cart. He also finds out that he is a celebrity because he is the only person to survive evil Lord Voldemort's (Harry's parents' killer) fury. In fact, Lord Voldemort disappeared when he attempted to kill the toddler Harry, and left a small scar on Harry's forehead.

After his trip through the magical train gate 9 ¾, Harry makes his way to Hogwart's school and finds friends, notably Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, who end up in the same 'house' as he does (Griffyndor). The novel and movie are a beautiful introduction into the compelling life of Harry Potter and into the deep and rich characters that J.K. Rowling will weave into the next six novels in the Harry Potter series.

Harry Potter and The Game of Quidditch

This game was invented by J.K. Rowling in her first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

The game is played by wizards and witches, and is first seen on the grounds of Hogwarts's school. The viewer is first introduced to it when Harry Potter is invited to join the team after he's been seen disobeying orders, flying his broom with wild abandon and mastery, by one of his Professors.

On broomsticks, the players attempt to take the ball through one of three small hoops at each end of the field, measuring 500 feet in length. Opposing players are allowed to do almost anything to stop the ball from it's goal, as well as to intercept it and take it to their own goal. Just like other ball-focused games, there are goals at each end and players have specific jobs to perform.

Chaser - This team member is assigned the task of removing the Quaffle from the other team and scoring, just as the name implies. There are three chasers per team.
Beater - A beater is a member who uses a separate ball, a Bludger, to propel toward the other team in an effort to stop them from scoring. There are two beaters on each team.
Keeper - The position of keeper is much like the goalie. His job is to stop the other team's ball from scoring. There is one keeper on each Quidditch team.
Seeker - The seeker is charged with catching the Golden Snitch. This feat ends the game, and awards 150 points to the team who is able to perform this amazing task. Harry Potter plays the position of Seeker.

There are four balls in a quidditch set, and each are magical balls. The seeker has to catch the Golden Snitch, which is worth one hundred fifty points and ends the Quidditch game. This ball is gold, obviously, and sprouts wings upon its release. It's very fast, very nimble and is somehow quite easy for Harry Potter to obtain. He's a natural seeker.

The bludger is used as a projectile. Each of the two Beaters throws a bludger to unseat or, at least, to cause a fumble, in order to prevent a successful carry of the Quaffle.

The Quaffle is the game ball, per se. The ball is larger and is designed to be carried, much like a football, under the arm. If a Chaser is successful in scoring, he's taken the Quaffle and gotten it through the two-foot wide goal (hoop). A successful goal is worth ten points in a game of Quidditch.

While the reader/viewer sees Quidditch often at Hogwarts, you soon learn it's a worldwide phenomenon when you see, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth Harry Potter book, that there is a Quidditch World Cup.

Since the books' worldwide success, real 'Muggle' teams have sprung up all over the globe, especially in England. The mystique of the game is that it's not only fantastical but it also makes normal, game-like sense, so the popularity will not likely die out soon. Quidditch, while made invented and made popular by Rowling, has captured the hearts of millions of young people.

Review Of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

This year, Harry's 13th, finds Harry competing against much older teenagers for the coveted Goblet of Fire. It's in this story that the teen angst really begins to show itself in the Potter character. J.K. Rowling uses this novel to age Potter's character considerably. He gets a crush on a girl at school, is mercilessly taunted for his apparent pride and spends much of the movie not speaking to one of his best friends, Ron Weasley.

The Goblet of Fire is an enchanted cup that is the trophy for the Triwizard Tournament. While only wizards over 17 are allowed to enter their names, one of Voldemort's minions, masquerading as a teacher, puts Harry's name into the cup. Since the cup picks Harry as one of the contestants, he must participate, even though he does not want to compete. Most of the school does not believe that Harry didn't put his name in the cup, and they treat him badly for most of the movie.

The first contest pits each of the four teens against a full grown dragon. Harry Potter barely survives, but is able to get away on his broom. Due to Harry's early on assistance to his fellow schoolmate, and contestant, Cedric Diggory, a friendship forms between the two boys, and they share a few secrets to aid each other in the contest.

The second contest causes a close friend of each of the contestants to be imprisoned in the lake, to die if they are not rescued. When one contestant fails to reach her special friend, a young sister of the contestant, Harry ignores the rules, and at great peril, he rescues both his friend and the little sister of the non-competing contestant, saving both of their lives.

The final contest puts all four contests in an enchanted maze. When Harry Potter saves Cedric Diggory's life, Diggory tells him to grab the Triwizard's Cup, but Harry says they should grab it together, sharing the victory.

The cup transports them to face Lord Voldemort, who has had the cup rigged so that Harry will have to fight him. Diggory is quickly murdered by Voldemort and Harry battles the evil wizard. When their magic streams cross, Harry is aided by the souls of those who the wizard has killed, including Diggory and his parents. Harry escapes and is able to bring back Diggory's body with him.

This fourth book has a sad ending, but Harry now knows that a final confrontation will have to occur with Voldemort before the world can be safe.
