Your pillow is a very important factor when it comes to the quality of sleep that you get. So why don't you spend more time finding the right one. Are all pillows the same? Are all mattresses the same? No to both, so be choosy when it comes to picking the right pillow for you. So what makes a good pillow?

The history of pillows

Pillows have their origins as far back as ancient Egypt. At one time pillows were reserved just for the rich. They didn't come into common use until the industrial revolution began to mass produce them.

What makes a good pillow?

That depends on a few things. Do you need a firm pillow for neck support? Or does your head need to be elevated because of some condition that you have like acid reflux. Or maybe you use a cpap machine for sleep apnea then a special pillow would come in handy. Some are allergic to certain types of pillows. Pillows come in different forms to accommodate your specific needs.

One important thing to remember is that a good pillow maintains the natural curve of the neck. The neck is curved in order to support the head's weight.

Possibly the worst position that you can sleep in is on your stomach because your neck has no support in this position. Sleeping on your side or even flat on your back is better than your stomach.
If you find that you just can't sleep any other way than on your stomach, put a pillow underneath you.

Lack of sleep's effect on working

The lack of sleep can be very detrimental to an individual's work production. A tired worker can cut back on productivity as well as pose a safety hazard especially if the work is in a construction area.

Sleep deprivation

Sleep deprivation effects can have serious consequences. Heart disease, diabetes and disturbed brain functions are just some of problems that may occur. Unfortunately the rapid pace of living today where lack of sleep is common presents a serious dilemma for a large portion of the population.

Sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia are common factors in causing sleep deprivation.

Lack of sleep can cause high blood pressure as well as a rise in cholesterol. Sleep apnea patients are the most at danger when it comes to heart disease.

The inability to metabolize glucose brought on by sleep deprivation can lead to Type 2 Diabetes.

In areas of the brain lack of sleep can lead to the decline of memory and certain learning skills. In some parts of the brain, such as the prefrontal lobe, there is more activity due to overcompensation.

Hypothalamic neurons produce neurotransmitters called GABA, which stop neurons from firing which have serotonin, histamine, norepinephrine, glutamate and hypocretin in them. This action promotes sleep. So if REM is never achieved as it is with sleep apnea patients this never occurs.

Allergies from pillows

One of the most common allergies is from dust mites that can be found on pillow cases. They live on dead cells and moisture. They are related to ticks and spiders. Millions of these little critters can be found on mattresses, pillows and blankets.
The allergy comes from the waste that the dust mites release. This waste is inhaled and causes allergies in millions of people. They experience symptoms similar to those of a cold: sneezing, running nose and coughing. They can also trigger bout of asthma.

What to do about them?
Proper and regular vacuuming should be the first step in getting rid of these pests. Washing sheets, blankets and pillows covers should be done on a regular basis. Make sure to wash in hot water. Purchase an allergy free mattress or a natural latex mattress. Steam cleans the carpets. Try to keep the room cool because dust mites live in hot humid temperatures.
