Itsy Bitsy Spider Love
My two-year old daughter loves reading and singing about the Itsy Bitsy Spider. In fact, she requests reading it so much that I started brainstorming different ways to tell the rhyme to keep things interesting. Sometimes all it takes to have some fun is looking around the house for everyday items that can be turned into educational play toys. In this lens I'll share some puppet ideas, magnet ideas, retelling, sequencing and other interesting ways to keep telling this classic children's song.
Itsy Bitsy Spider Puppets

One of the easiest learning props to create are puppets. There are stick puppets, hand puppets, and finger puppets. Puppets are wonderful ways of engaging children with stories and rhymes. They can be used to sing the song, retell the rhyme and make the song more hands-on. The best thing is that most puppets can be made with items from around the house:
-- cut out images from old cards and tape onto craft sticks
-- cut out images from coloring books
-- find puppet printables already made on the internet
-- create from old, clean socks
-- decorate paper bags
-- create from craft foam
For my Itsy Bitsy Spider stick puppets, I created the printable for you. All you have to do is download, print and cut! (See link below)

For a twist on the stick puppets, you can also make it an educational game. I wrote the words of each picture on the craft stick. For toddlers, this is a nice way to introduce print and vocabulary. For my preschooler, I wrote the words again on plain craft sticks. Then she tried to match the words with the pictures.

Itsy Bitsy Spider Magnet Play

Anything you use to make a stick puppet or finger puppet, you can also turn into a magnet. My children love to play with magnets. They use them on old cookie sheets, the refrigerator and our magnetic dry-erase boards. I turned the Itsy Bitsy spider printable into magnets by using my Xyron XRN900 9-Inch Creative Station
Ideas for Using Magnets:
-- Use while singing the song.
-- Use for telling the order: What happened first? etc.
-- Use for free-play: Let your child draw the scene on a dry erase board and use the magnets as props.
-- Magnet Hide-and Seek: Tape a piece of paper or felt onto the board. Place one magnet underneath. Have the rest of the magnets visable, off to the side. See if they can guess what is under the paper.
