Exhibitions at the Louvre

Intrestingly although the Louvre is the most popular art museum by a very long way, the Louvre does not tend to host the top art exhibitions.

The top exhibition at the Louvre in 2010 was "Holy Russia: Russian Art" which attracted a total of 263,308 visitors. It ranked as the 20th most popular exhibition in the world.

Paris 1400 - Les arts sous Charles VI | Paris 1400: Art during the reign of Charles VI
This exhibition brings together 270 works in a range of media and techniques, demonstrating the extraordinary heights of artistic production in Paris in the 1400s-in particular the period's illuminated manscripts and fabulous objects in enameled gold.
A number of paralel exhibitions throughout France testify to the munificence of aristocratic French patrons of the 1400s.
Masters of European Drawing from the 16th to the 20th Century | Louvre Museum
In addition to its many splendid examples of French drawing from the 17th to the 19th century, this collection also includes outstanding works from abroad, notably from Germany, Britain, Denmark and Italy.
The Motais de Narbonne Collection - French and Italian paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries | Louvre Museum
Since the early 1980s Héléna and Guy Motais de Narbonne, Paris art lovers closely connected to the Musée du Louvre, have been passionately committed to building up a remarkably unified collection.

The theft of the Mona Lisa

on 21 August 1911

Mona Lisa Was Stolen
It was unbelievable -- someone stole the most famous painting in the world. Follow this two year long caper that shocked the world.
The Independent | The cheek! From hapless chancers to masters of audacity
A century ago today, an Italian stuck the Mona Lisa up his smock and started a global underworld trend

When an Italian decorator called Vincenzo Peruggia walked out of the Louvre with the world's most famous painting under his smock a century ago today, he had little idea of the global trend he would spawn. Since the theft of the Mona Lisa on 21 August 1911, art heists have become an increasingly common
Stealing Mona Lisa | Style | Vanity Fair
The shocking theft of the Mona Lisa, in August 1911, appeared to have been solved 28 months later, when the painting was recovered. In an excerpt from their new book, the authors suggest that the audacious heist concealed a perfect-and far more lucrative-crime.

The Crimes of Paris

A True Story of Murder, Theft, and Detection

On August 21, 1911, came a crime like none other: Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre.

In The Crimes of Paris, Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler tell the gripping story of the theft and the investigation that followed. Bertillon and his associates would pursue clues leading them into the world of avant-garde artists, cheap apartments in Montmartre and Montparnasse, cabarets, and from this first great mystery into yet others. Their suspects would be everyone from the poet Guillaume Apollinaire to J. P. Morgan to Pablo Picasso.

A vivid tapestry of Paris, daring thieves, and relentless investigators, The Crimes of Paris is a heart-pounding true-crime thriller of the highest order, as well as a brilliant account of the modern detective.
