I've read the book and it grabs your attention and doesn't let go!
Roberta Rich has crafted an enthralling story that makes 16th Century Venice throb with life and suspense. It was released Feb. 8 Praise for The Midwife of Venice: "Not only did Roberta Rich transport me to 16th century Venice with its seductive tapestries of smells, sights, textures, and beliefs, she involved me in a poignant story of seasoned love. I don't know which I admired more - the wonderfully realized setting or the suspenseful story of Hannah and Isaac." REVIEWED BY SARAH JOHNSON
From Saturday's Globe and Mail - Saturday Read: The Midwife of Venice by Roberta Rich
- I just don't find myself particularly drawn to historical fiction books, but I may soon be changing my tune thanks to "The Midwife of Venice."
The novel is set in 16th century Venice and features Hannah Levi, a notoriously skilled, Jewish midwife, as our main character. Hannah lives in Ghetto Nuevo, the Jewish ghetto in Venice. One evening, she is approached by a Christian count to assist in his wife's delivery. He must bear an heir soon or else his entire inheritance will be lost to his two brothers. Hannah initially turns him down; after all, it is illegal for Jews to supply medical assistance to Christians - Regaling Roberta Feb. 24, 2011

Have you ever read a book that touched, moved and brought you to tears? It may sound dramatic, but with no exaggeration, Roberta Rich's historical fiction The Midwife of Venice, set against the backdrop of sixteenth-century Italy, is that kind of book for me. (Read the first chapter here and you'll see what I mean!) I was extremely excited when a lunch invitation with the author was extended to me; I would have the chance to tell her personally how passionate I am about her book! - A Bookworm's World - The Midwife of Venice is Roberta Rich's debut novel
- Rich has successfully combined history, suspense and romance into a fascinating page turner. My only complaint - it ended too soon! But it looks like a sequel is in the works - I'll be picking it up for sure.

Hannah Levi is known throughout sixteenth-century Venice for her skill in midwifery. When a Christian count appears at Hannah's door in the Jewish ghetto imploring her to attend his labouring wife, who is nearing death, Hannah is forced to make a dangerous decision. Not only is it illegal for Jews to render medical treatment to Christians, it's also punishable by torture and death. Moreover, as her Rabbi angrily points out, if the mother or child should die, the entire ghetto population will be in peril.

GramaBarb says:
You will remember Hannah for the rest of your life. A few paragraphs into the story you are no longer a spectator but you are living right beside Hannah feeling her every emotion, smelling all the disgusting odors and hearing the baby cry. I had to stop reading after the first major crisis in Hannah's life as the images were incredible and unforgetable. I knew that the next time I picked up this book I would need the time to finish it in one sitting. As I was sure I would not be able to put it down. I was right! This thriller kept the midnight oil burning. What a powerful book! Read it!
I rate it 5 stars and adult.

This volume discusses the commerce of music and its connection to the printing and publishing industry in mid-sixteenth century Venice. Music printers occupied a unique niche in the Renaissance printing world because their product appealed to those with sophisticated taste and was not readable by the entire literate public.
