The Mobile Lifestyle: Life on the Go
For the last 13 years, I have had a mobile and footloose lifestyle. I have "migrated" through various hotels and apartments in at least 10 countries and enjoyed each experience. Since we left our jobs 13 years ago, my husband and I have worked on a succession of contracts requiring residence for months in different countries, mainly on contracts to leapfrog national education/learning systems into the 21st Century. (Hope that doesn't sound pretentious!)
Friends keep telling us to retire and enjoy life but what we do is what we would do for enjoyment and "to rust unburnished" is just not possible. Not only are we engaged but we are contributing. This engagement has brought new experiences, new friends, new places and new challenges. We thought at first that this would be just a temporary engagement before finally folding up and idling our time in the beaches of the Caribbean, but what this experience has done is open a whole new world for us. A whole new lifestyle. Life on the World-Wide Road.
For years, I thought I was living a mobile lifestyle. But I was mistaken. Physical mobility is one thing, the mobile lifestyle I am referring to here is quite another. This is what they refer to as TML. This is what keeps lifestyle dons awake dreaming up of new gadgets to make people cool. Yes, this is now the coolest lifestyle - the mobile lifestyle.
Not just a Device, It Is a Lifestyle
TML refers to the constant connectivity that mobile devices and mobile applications have inserted into our lives. On top of the travel, this new TML has totally changed the world we live in and as ...ahhhh...mature wanders...keeping up with the double mobility is a real challenge. What intrigues me most is the "mobile and convergent experience" this provides. True, as one of these mobile devices claim, "this is not just a device, it is a lifestyle". Live the lifestyle.

I have seen this book in some of the Squidoo lenses so I got interested and picked up a copy for myself. And this read, made me explore a different world, a world of resources for those who are physically mobile but also a convergence of things that I manage in our physically mobile lifestyle. I can't believe that many of these things I found daunting can easily be managed.
Your Mobile Lifestyle: Make it Happen
Mobile Devices, Gadgets and What Have You

Smart phones? What about your IPad, IPod, Kindle, Netbook, Laptop,TIp Top, Flip Flop or whatever have you? Companies are running to capture the market with the best product.
Now, when you travel, you end up with a suitcase of wireless devices (with masses or auxilliary wires!!!), chargers (often different for each type of device), batteries and what have you that you need to function in this world of TML. Inside those devices are a host of mobile applications so arcane and perverse as to end enjoyment just in review! But if you pick the apps carefully, they bring you all you need even in Wagadougu.
Yes, with just one device or two, you will be able to talk to the person you need in the office, access all the information in your office files and meet with your suppliers in other countries as well as your own home country. You can read your local newspapers and not miss the match or race your hearts were set to watch that weekend. You can download television stations in your area, your favourite newspapers and movies and whatever you need to make your life seem like home. You can carry a thousand books without ever packing paper. And more are in development.
Enhance your mobile lifestyle
Try these mobile devices
I was just reading a recent news on speed trial. A Canadian company based in its capital city of Ottawa, Blaze, pitted iPhone4 against Google's Nexus S smartphone over the same WiFi connection. Blaze claimed that after its test, they found out that the Android phone operated 52% faster on average after more than 45,000 page loads from 1,000 web sites. Looks like the difference was less noticeable when loading lighter websites optimized for mobile phones.
Again, the best is for you to choose the devices, gadgets and applications that will suit your own particular needs and requirements. Forget hot and sexy. Go for what works.

Do you have the Coolest Mobile Gadgets?
The Recent Mobile Apps?

3-G...4-G...OMG....it is indeed changing fast. You don't have to go home or go to a place with Wi-Fi to get connected. With WiMax, you are connected all the time. And if these acronyms puzzle you...you are slowly sliding under the techno bus and missing a world of wonder. No pressure...you can leapfrog in...but do it soon or your train will be so far out of the station you won't even hear the whistle!
Analysts are saying that by 2015, there will be 20x mobile data and more devices with obscure names and uses than end of party promises. Many companies are now creating mobile applications that enable the mobile workforce not only to be continuously connected to the main office but constant access to key information, data and services to make their mobile lifestyle easier to manage and enable them to be more effective and productive.
Do you need all these things? Probably not , but there are some apps that can change your life.
You don't always need to have the latest

There are so many choices out there and voices calling us...Buy me...Buy me....We seem to need so many things all of a sudden...And yet, we can't be in denial...the world is moving and soon mobile will get more use than desktop so be on the move.

Mobility: Fun and Challenge
The Power of Now

Mobility has enough fun to make the challenges almost worthwhile. You have to learn how to adapt attitude to fit context, how to give your all but not be attached, how to love the moment and love what you do and discover the possibilities in even obscure applications with guides and references.
You learn to live in the moment (not for the moment ) and enjoy it. Echart Tolle's book, "The Power of Now" comes to mind. You have to sort things out, which ones are necessary and which ones are peripheral. Eventually, you need to let go of so many unnecessary things companies are turning out. Or, you burden yourself with the trashing nightmare.

The One Mobile Gadget to Have
A Smart Phone
Want to catch up with TML. Own a smart phone. A smartphone is like a cell mobile that offers advanced computing ability and connectivity than a modern basic feature phone. Smartphones are handheld computers. They allow users to set up more advanced apps. We had been using one but because of our constant travel, we had problems with various providers. However, recently, I saw my sister using her smart phone as their provider allows for roaming cheaply. She and her husband were having a great holiday constantly in touch with her employees but more to tell them of their adventures than following up on the business. She is not even a savvy computer user. The ease of communication certainly gave her the confidence to go for holidays.
An unlocked one will be good if you are travelling in many countries. You can buy a SIM card cheaply in most places and just change the card each time you move to another country. It will be cheaper that way. Even though you have the roaming option in your smart phone, it will still cost you much to retain your home service while you move from country to country. So try one of these.
Or, get a net book and load SKYPE. Free phone calls anywhere in the world to other SKYPE users.

Mobile Technologies Save Lives
Here is an excerpt from a link that I have included here
Before you disregard mobile technologies and its applications, read this excerpt:
"The appeal of mobile technologies transcends their ability to simply entertain or connect people to each other. We think they could save lives. Mobile technologies have enormous potential as tools to promote healthy behavioral change, to transform the caregiver-patient relationship, and to revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered in the U.S. and around the globe. In fact, mobile technologies are already being used to promote healthy lifestyle changes, encourage patients' active involvement in their treatment, reduce waiting times in doctors' offices, and improve a provider's access to patient information, all with the goal of improving healthcare outcomes."
This is the link I quoted the excerpt from

The Other Mobility Dilemna
Mobile Makes it Easier

For some, being physically mobile is a choice. For some, it is a necessity. Many have to leave homes and families to work in other countries. Some for a few years, others for a few months. Whatever the reasons, you are in for a mobile lifestyle. You can be almost anywhere with all the contacts and resources you need to link to work and to family.
This is a major help for those who have to work away from families. Now, with skype and other mobile applications, you can talk to your family without breaking your bank account. You can even talk to them face to face.
Mobile Phone Technology Potential for Development
A Big Opportunity for the Poor

Text messages and mobile applications have transformed many of the world's poor. One of the ladies raising vegetables in the rural area of Cambodia just calls or sends a text to the the middleman when her vegetables are ready for harvest. For the first time, she can earn as much as $200 a month, a bonanza for her family.
Mobile penetration at this level has really improved the lives of many poor people. Text messages warn farmers in Uganda of banana rut. This is because of the application developed by Grameen Bank in partnership with Google that delivers information on crop disease and weather and also collects data on farming trends and pass this on to the government. Grameen, in Bangladesh, is developing micro finance applications to support so many women getting loans for small businesses.
Mobile phones are now reaching people in remote areas. They do not anymore have to climb up trees to get phone signals to reach anyone outside of their villages. They can ask questions from experts on their crops using text messages.
Mobile phones have also broken through bureaucracies. People are now texting their local officials when illegal fishing is observed in their waters. Some of these areas now have mobile broadbands rivalling that of rich nations. And families and villages share computers and cell phones and are adapting to these technologies faster.
Mobile phones have indeed, in many poor areas, spurred new programs on education, health, micro-finance and agriculture. They have enhanced the lives of the poor in many countries.
The Mobile Device that has enhanced my life
The Kindle
Yes, when the kindle came, our mobile lifestyle got a big boost. Instead of carrying a suitcase of books, I have a whole library of books I want to read and I can also get recent ones that I only lusted at before when I read the reviews in the newspapers. All these in a gadget the size of a book which I can put in my purse.
Kindle Fire, Full Color 7" Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi
Amazon Price: $199.00 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
This is one device that has proven to be very useful for us. It has not only given us books but also access to the internet in areas where there is WiFi. We were in a hotel last weekend that charged for WiFi but when I opened Whispernet in Kindle, it gave me a connection so I was able to answer my emails. Because of the cover, I feel I am reading a book. If you have allergies, this will save you from those mold triggers.

The Cool Mobile Lifestyle? Watch Out!
Harmful Impact of Using Mobile
As tech companies and mobile providers battle for power, features, design and apps, nobody seems to highlight the harmful impact of all these. We just keep loading our mobile gadgets with the latest features, games and apps that we don't realize how much harm these might bring not only to the power of these gadgets but to our own selves, our health.
Conflicting statements from researchers are supporting opposite sides of the issue. Recently, the World Health Organization, based upon the consensus view of the scientific and medical communities, has stated that cancer is unlikely to be caused by cellular phones or their base stations and that reviews have found no convincing evidence for other health effects. There you go. What do you personally think?
Still, for those who want to be sure, read some of the links I placed here. It might be interesting to compare.
Some of the links you need to read on these harmful effects of mobile gadgets

- I'm a big fan of any technology that makes life easier! I run my own business and Smartphones/PDA's etc make organising schedules and customers much easier for those who work for me without them needing to make time in their day to come into the office or speak to me in person. My niece and her family have just moved to the USA from the UK and my sister-in-law was upset at the thought of missing out on regular contact and seeing the children face to face - then we told her about webcams, Skype and all the other ways she can keep in touch and she's now having a great time exploring the world of modern communications technology! I love technology - it's expensive but fun! A great lens exploring an interesting subject - blessed by a SquidAngel :)

- What a fun lifestyle. I worked on some of the designs of these modern mobile devices (the chips inside them at least) and for many years travelled the world to the remote places where the design and manufacture was being done, although until recently I was lucky to even have a decent landline connection home, internet dial-up or somewhere to charge my laptop, let alone the level of mobile support we expect everywhere now. Things have really improved in the last few years.
