A Book Review-Satire of The Moralist by John Warley

The Moralist by John Warley is a somewhat satirical view of small town America creatively weaving local and National politics with our educational, health and legal systems through the bizarre antics of unique personalities grounded by a bold spoken single mom and spiced with some lip smacking tomato base barbeque sauce that will make you "Slap Your Daddy"!

Now, if you think that was a mouthful, get ready for this fun tongue-in-cheek read by this highly imaginative author, John Warley.

I love the cover design by Chris Beatrice

Author John Warley said "I looked for months for someone who could illustrate the image I had in my head of what the cover should look like. Chris nailed it. I told him the pig had to be the smuggest, most self-satisfied possible, and in that regard Chris exceeded my expectations. Also, the idea of the Texas belt buckle was Chris's, and I think that was a fine touch."

The Moralist is John Warley's second book. and I understand it is quite different from his first, Bethesda's Child. I have not read Bethesda's Child yet but plan to do that soon. I have read The Moralist and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a fun read and will have you laughing out loud. My advice to any reader of this book is to relax and enjoy the read! It is a Political/Social Satire so you have to be willing to laugh at life a little but it will leave you thinking, too. This Book Review-Satire will give you a little insight into how John Warley's creative mind develops his unique characters.

If you don't have a Kindle and are interested in the Paper Back or Hard Back edition, just browse around Amazon.com because it is there! Thanks.

This author pulls the reader in hook, line and sinker with this tale set in fictional Centerfield, Texas (named after a famous baseball player who once played Centerfield - the mayor said that they couldn't name the town First Base which is what he was known to play because people would always make the joke about getting to First Base). See what I mean. This is funny stuff but it does leave you thinking. I am still worrying about the teenage boy with a fetish for elderly women's Orthopaedic Shoes. Maybe it is because I wear them.

Why did I read this book by Author John Warley?

How did I find this author?

Author John WarleyJohn Warley and his web master, Carla, do a great job of giving the reader information on the official website but that was not my first introduction.

One of my local facebook friends, John Sitton aka Sittonbull on Squidoo, introduced me to John Worley. I have known John Sitton for a lifetime, and I know that he is an avid and astute reader. When John Sitton speaks, I listen! Recently John posted about his Citadel classmate's new book, The Moralist, and I am glad he did. Thanks, John!

John Warley is an Attorney and lives in Beaufort, South Carolina with his wife of 40 years. They are the parents of 4 children. He attended the Citadel on a football scholarship and received his Law Degree from the University of Virginia.

Interview With Author John Warley by OhMe

Thank you, John, for the Interview!

John Warley and Pat ConroyO - When did you realize that you had a talent for writing?

J - In 1990, I spent a day with my youngest son and his soccer teammates that led to a short story I call "The Dare on the Bridge." The satisfaction I felt in writing that story, added to the praise I received from those I shared it with, convinced me I had tapped into something important. Not long after I began the novel that became Bethesda's Child. I think anyone who completes a novel falls into one of two categories: (1) "Thank God that's over; I'll never do that again," or (2) "I can't wait to begin the next one." I fell into category 2. When I sent the manuscript for Bethesda's Child to Pat Conroy, he praised it and sent it on to Julian Bach, his agent in NYC. I think that the morning Julian called to say he wanted to represent me and the book was the day I realized I may have some talent.

O - Did one person or event inspire you to become an author? Explain.

J - Pat Conroy and I were best friends at The Citadel. He has since inspired me and encouraged my writing career.

O - Do you have a favorite line from your book, The Moralist? If so, why is it your favorite line.

J - I like Buster's campaign slogan: "Good things, Si!, Bad things, No!" because to me it encapsulates the absurdity of bumper sticker politics and sound bite elections.

O - Are you already working on another book?

J - Two, actually. I have begun The Moralist II, in which Fran will attempt to negotiate with Art and Abbar to find world peace; George will pursue liposuction, and Joyce will buy an IPhone with an app that starts her car when she makes calls. I have also completed 25% of a historical fiction work I call The Home Guard, set in Beaufort during the Civil War. I expect that to be published late next year.

"Good Things, Si! Bad Things, No!"
I couldn't have said it better myself, could you? Buster is one of the characters in The Moralist and he is actually the one that the town is named after since he played Centerfield. He is running for Mayor of fictional Centerfield, Texas so if you are from Texas you really need to read this book but I hope you are willing to laugh at the way things are all across the United States.
