"Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion." Dolly Parton pretty much sums up the classic movie "Steel Magnolia" with that line and it's the essence of the film. "Steel Magnolia" is one of my "go to" feel good movies and I can recite it line for line. Not only did it have my favorite female actress in it, Julia Roberts, but it also starred many of the actresses that I have admired and have been thoroughly entertained by throughout the years. The two performances that stole the show and had the best one liners in the film were Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine) and Clariee (Olympia Dukakis), the two best friends that were forever giving each other a hard time, but deeply cared for one another.

Even though the movie came out 25 years ago, I can still watch it today (and do) without it ever feeling dated. The story all revolves around the small town gossip sessions the town woman have at Truvy's (Dolly Parton) salon. Through the ups and downs of each woman's life they all give one another support, and get through it with laughter and tears.

The witty banters between characters are a pleasant offset to the dramatic and heartfelt moments. Whether it's Truvy's opinion on her Son's new Girlfriend, "The nicest thing I can say about her is all her tattoos are spelled correctly."Clariee talking about her best friend, "Ouiser could never stay mad at me; she worships the quicksand I walk on."Or when M'Lynn (Sally Field) suggests Quiser goes to her clinic to talk with someone due to her negative attitude, Ouiser responds "I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a very bad mood 40 years!" This movie is packed with memorable lines.

"Steel Magnolias" is a comedy-drama that proves there's nothing you can't get through if you have a good laugh and a few good friends by your side. As Truvy says "Smile! It increases your face value". This movie has always put a smile on my face.

Some great moments from “Steel Magnolias

Years after seeing the movie, I went to the play and what made this sence even more funny was that there was a man in the theatre sleeping through the play.

Great memories of a brilliantly funny and touching movie.

Congratulations on ROTD - I can barely watch this movie, in fact, because it's so emotional, I tend to avoid it unless I know I'm in the mood to take it on! wonderful, moving, movie

Thanks much. True, it's emotional, but there's nothing you can't get through with some love and humor.

My husband and I watched Steel Magnolias for the first time just a few months ago and we both loved it. So sorry I put it off for so long. It's a wonderful movie that stuck with me for days. In fact, I guess it's about time to watch it again. Thanks for your spot-on review!
