The Pointer Sisters should have stayed with jazz!

HERE'S WHAT I THINK

The Pointer Sisters should have stayed with jazz!

The talent, energy, and versatility of the Pointer Sisters were put to best use when they sang jazz. They were always eclectic, doing great R&B and even venturing into country. But jazz vocals were what made them unique and were a vital part of their act.

Until 1977, that is. As they headed into the '80s, they turned toward a more commercial sound. Sadly, they are best known now for pop and disco tunes that anyone could have sung.

Old Songs

This is The Pointer Sisters in rehearsal

From the early '70s. They definitely know how to put on a show. And remember, this is just the rehearsal!

Cloudburst

This is hot. I love their energy and also the precision in these rapid-fire vocals.

My memories of The Pointer Sisters

When I was a kid, variety shows were a staple on television, and I loved them. The Carol Burnett Show, The Captain & Tennille, Sonny & Cher, and many more. I loved the skits, the comedians, and the singing.

And The Pointer Sisters were very popular guests on those shows, singing funky or jazzy tunes and always sounding perfect. I admired their harmonies and was especially impressed by the deepest-voiced sister (that was Ruth Pointer). They were one of a kind.

This one is an original song, written by Anita Pointer.

Those other Pointer Sisters songs (sigh)

OK, I'll let the other side have their say

In the interest of equality, here are some of those mainstream pop songs that have made them a ton of money. As you watch them, I'm sure you'll agree with me that their old stuff was better, right?

Love 'em either way! So flipping a coin to decide which side to come down on. Heads, you're it!

You're no doubt right, though I'd never have known it.

No way, Monkeybrain!

sallemange says:

I'm glad they didn't because I probably wouldn't have got to know of them

VickiSims says:

I think their voices and the way they blended and harmonized together were fantastic no matter what they sang.

OhMe says:

I enjoy the very talented Pointer Sisters singing anything

The one Pointer Sisters tune that everyone can agree on!

Whichever side of the aisle you're on, you have to love the Pointer Sisters' contribution to Sesame Street -- the pinball counting song. They did them for all the numbers from 1 to 12. This video is the one for the number 4.
