The Team The Seattle Seahawks Should Have Drafted

The Seattle Seahawks belong to the NFC West division along with the Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks are always a contender for the playoffs in what is considered by many to be a weak NFL division.

The Seahawks, however, have struggled in 2008 because of their lack of depth at the quarterback and wide receiver positions. Better drafting in 2003 through 2006 could have made this team stronger. Let's examine where the Seattle Seahawks could have improved this team in recent NFL drafts. Keep in mind no NFL club makes every draft pick a winner, but some changes could alter the team's success.

2003 NFL Draft

In the 2003 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks selected Marcus Trufant (CB) with the 11th overall pick. Seattle got a terrific player with this draft pick and Trufant now has a long-term contract with the club.

In round 2, the Seahawks drafted Ken Hamlin (S). Trufant and Hamlin solidified Seattle's secondary, which helped the team be one of the better defenses in the NFL. However, Hamlin suffered career-threatening injuries in an off-the-field incident in October 2005. He has since recovered from those injuries and now plays for the Dallas Cowboys with his own long-term contract. Regardless of Hamlin's injuries, he was still a good pick for the Seahawks (you can't expect a player to be seriously injured after you draft him).

The Seahawks picked Wayne Hunter (OT) in the 3rd round and was not a good selection (he was with the team for only three years). A better draft pick here would have been Justin Fargas (RB).
Antonio Gates Image
In the 4th round of the 2003 NFL Draft, the Seahawks selected Seneca Wallace (QB). He has had to play quite a bit in 2008 to cover for an injured Matt Hasselbeck, but as you will read below, a better quarterback could have been drafted. At this spot in the draft, Seattle should have picked Asante Samuel (CB) or Terrence McGee (CB).

The Seahawks actually had a second draft pick in the 4th round and it was used on Solomon Bates (LB). This was a terrible pick (evidenced by his two-year stay with the club). Better options like Robert Mathis (DE) and David Diehl (OT) were still available.

The Seattle Seahawks drafted Chris Davis (FB) in round 5. Again, another bad pick that should have gone to Cato June (LB). A few undrafted NFL stars that could have been drafted or signed by the Seahawks, but weren't, were Tony Romo (QB), Antonio Gates (TE), Kris Dielman (OG) and Gary Brackett (LB).

2004 NFL Draft

With the 23rd overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Seahawks selected Marcus Tubbs (DT). Tubbs could have been a huge talent, but numerous injuries has sidelined his career. The Seattle Seahawks should have drafted Bob Sanders (SS).

In the 2nd round, the Seahawks selected Michael Boulware (SS). He was not the impact player Seattle thought he should have been and was traded to the Houston Texans before the 2007 NFL season. The Seahawks should have drafted Darnell Dockett (DT), Nathan Vasher (CB), Nick Hardwick (C), Chris Cooley (TE), Matt Schaub (QB), Jerricho Cotchery (WR) or Nate Kaeding (PK).

In round 4, the Seahawks picked Niko Koutouvides (LB) and did not develop into a NFL star. A better pick here would have been Jared Allen (DE) or Michael Turner (RB). The Seahawks drafted D.J. Hackett (WR) in the 5th round. Hackett was not a stud receiver and was not resigned by the Seahawks in 2008. The club could have drafted Derrick Ward (RB).

The Seattle Seahawks had a terrible 2004 NFL Draft. All of their draft picks could have been better.

2005 NFL Draft

Chris Spencer (C) was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks with the 26th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Spencer has been a starter for most of his career so far with Seattle, so this is considered a good pick for them. However, Logan Mankins (OG) and Roddy White (WR) were still on the draft board, but Seattle filled a need with a starter.
Josh Cribbs Image
The Seahawks hit a home run with there 2nd round pick, Lofa Tatupu (LB). In his first three years, he has been a Pro Bowler every season. Tatupu gives the Seahawks a wealth of defensive production. This is perhaps Seattle's best draft pick in recent years.

In round 3, the Seahawks selected David Greene (QB) and this was a waste of a draft pick. He was cut after only two years of service with the Seahawks. Seattle should have drafted Kyle Orton (QB). Ray Willis (OT) was picked in the 4th round and is mainly used as a backup in Seattle. The Seahawks had a chance to draft Pro Bowlers Marion Barber III (RB) or Trent Cole (DE) instead.

Jeb Huckeba (DE) was grabbed in the 5th round by Seattle. He lasted only two years. The Seahawks could have picked or signed anyone from this list of undrafted players that became NFL stars: Ryan Grant (RB), Joshua Cribbs (KR) and Atari Bigby (S).

2006 NFL Draft

With the 31st overall pick, the Seahawks selected Kelly Jennings (CB). It's still early, but so far Jennings has not made a name for himself. He is a starter, but other NFL stars like DeMeco Ryans (LB), Marcus McNeill (OT), Devin Hester (KR), Maurice Jones-Drew (RB) or Greg Jennings (WR) were still on the draft board.
Marques Colston Image
In round 2, the Seattle Seahawks picked Darryl Tapp (DE). Tapp is a solid player and with time, could be an elite football player. Seattle could have considered Brandon Marshall (WR), Owen Daniels (TE) or Leon Washington (RB), but Tapp was a need for the team.

Rob Sims (OG) was drafted in round 4 and so far is not an impact player. The Seahawks could have gone with a better pick here like Omar Gaither (LB). In the 5th round of the 2006 NFL Draft, David Kirtman (FB) was selected and was cut before the 2008 NFL season. The Seahawks had an opportunity to draft Antoine Bethea (FS).

With another wasted pick in round 7, Seattle selected Ben Obomanu (WR) who has not been a force yet with Seattle. However, three draft picks later, a football player by the name of Marques Colston (WR) was drafted and has been an elite wide receiver from day one for the New Orleans Saints. Seattle could have drafted Colston and would have gave the Seahawks much needed receiver depth.

The Ultimate Seattle Seahawks Team

Some of the Seahawks' draft picks have been winners and obviously some have been losers. Seattle has reached the Super Bowl recently in February 2006. However, a few changes of draft picks or signings of undrafted football players could have brought more depth and talent to the Seattle Seahawks. Perhaps these few changes could have given Seattle another Super Bowl appearance.
