The Settlers of Catan Strategy Game

The Settlers of Catan is a strategy game from Mayfair Games that originated in Germany in 1995. As of January 2010 it is now on it's 4th edition with millions of players worldwide. The game play requires the player to collect resource in their quest to build roads, settlements and cities in order to become victorious in the game. The great thing about the game is that each time it is played a different outcome will b e had due to the variable board. We play the game for around 2 hours with 3-4 players. It is designed for ages 10 and up but our teenagers seem to really enjoy the game more than most it seems.

The game is not easy at first but older people will quickly get the hang of it. The board consists of 19 terrain hexes that are surrounded by the blue ocean. Each of the terrains produce a different type of resource that is needed whether it is wood or brick or grain. As you prgress through the game you will need to utilize your resources to build a road along the edge of the hexes to settlements and cities.

Dice is used to determine what kind of resource you will acquire, only if you have settlements on them. This combination of resources will allow you to upgrade and build your cities. Trading between players keeps things moving along nicely. The victor will be the one that collects 10 victory points. You receive a point for each settlement and 2 points for each city.

The game never gets boring. There are numerous outcomes as well as new expansion packs being released all the time. This a fantastic game for the family or having a bunch of your friends get together.
