The Subtle Knife Movie - The Latest...

The Subtle Knife is the sequel to The Golden Compass and is the second part in His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.

The Subtle Knife movie was pencilled in for release in late 2009, but has now been put on hold indefinitely due to low box office results in the US and the recession. Personally, I think this is disappointing as this is my favourite book in the trilogy. If you would like to lend your support to the release, please scroll down to find a link to an online petition.

I have developed this lens to highlight potential movements with the movie and to chart any developments with script and director. There may be periods when there is no feed at all due to lack of information. Please feel free to bookmark and check back at a later stage. I will post on here as soon as news breaks.

What is The Subtle Knife about?

The story so far...

At the end of The Northern Lights, Lyra Silvertongue watched in fear and fascination as her father, Lord Asriel, created a bridge between worlds. Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon, are now lost in an alternate universe where they meet Will Parry, a fugitive from a third universe. Will has found a small window between Cittagazze (a place where children roam unchecked but invisible Specters suck the spirit out of adults) and his Oxford, which, with its Burger Kings and cars, is frighteningly different from the Oxford Lyra knows.

Will's father, an explorer, disappeared years ago, but recently some odd characters have started asking questions about him, and now, having accidentally killed one of them, Will is wanted by the police. Armed with the Subtle Knife, a tool that cuts any material (including that which separates universes) and Lyra's alethiometer, the children set out to find John Parry, with adults of various stripes in desperate pursuit.

Lyra's finest qualities, her courage and quick mind, are stretched to the limit as she has to lie, cheat and steal to keep herself and Will out of danger. However, she must also learn when to tell the truth and when to trust, for, though she does not yet know it, she has a huge part to play in the upcoming battle between Good and Evil.

Why I Love The Subtle Knife

The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, Book 2)

Amazon Price: $0.85 (as of 02/17/2012)Buy Now

The Subtle Knife is my favourite book in the Dark Materials trilogy. I particularly like the way that it combines 'reality' with fantasy, bringing the main characters of Will and Lyra together via a window that exists between different worlds. There's plenty of action, especially in the nail-biting opening, but Pullman also expands upon the idea of parallel universes - cramming teasers and links into the novel.

about an month ago i have seen the movie for the first time and till then i see it 13 times. every time it appears on t.v then i am tiring to see it at any cost. so, if the sequel will be released i feel very happy and my happiness touches the cloud on sky if there was no replacement in casting specially dakota blue richars as lyra and nikol kidman(who first appears in any negative role in the golden compass) Mrs. coolter. i am waiting for the sequel part

New Line destroyed the series. We all want to see a sequel, but they prefer some 0.5 version of Lord of the Rings. ==Status of the movie "The Subtle Knife" : No active development== I really hope that they will make a sequel, but without replacing all the actors. Nicole Kidman was great for example...

I live in Oklahoma USA and I find this book to be the greatest thing to hit modern literature and this company throws it aside cause it stirred up too much controversy? What the hell people, the stirring up controversy is why it needs to be made. Harry Potter stirred up a lot of controversy too, but WB didn't care, it was made anyway.

I'm really disappointed that "The Subtle Knife" is being postponed. I'm just wondering if the movie was such a failure, then why is the movie "Another Earth" getting a slow start and has yet to make $1 million.

If anyone has any clue to when real progress is being made, I would love to know.
