Celebrating The Summer Solstice
Ranked #17,114 in Holidays & Celebrations, #297,678 overall
When Is The Summer Solstice?
Solstice, from the Latin for sun stands still. For several days before and after each solstice, the sun appears to stand still in the sky-that is, its noontime elevation does not seem to change. This is a traditional time for celebrations around the world. It's "the first day of summer-the summer solstice-is the longest day of the year, the Sun reaches its most northern point in the sky at local noon. After this date, the days start getting shorter."

Summer gathered in the weather, the wind had the proper touch, the breathing of the world was long and warm and slow. ~Ray Bradbury

We have a midsummer but no midspring. We have a midwinter but no midautumn. Spring and fall are the seasons of the most obvious action and change. They are flowing this way and that continually. They have no stagnant or slack-water times. But there comes a period in summer -- and in winter too -- when day follows day with little variation. ~Edwin Way Teale

- In my parents“home-region, Umbria (Italy), people used to celebrate summer solstice making big fires and jumping across them. I“ve found the tradition of fires when I moved to Denmark too.... so I went on celebrating!!! :)
