Gone Surfing
Rather than emptying your bank account on a new surfboard why not get a used one? You should be able to pick up a second hand board for significantly less than you'll pay for a new one. If you are having their first go surfing there isn't any point in spending a fortune for a new surfboard as you will probably quickly wish to change the beginner's board for a more expert surfer's board, so a used surfboard would be perfect. Have a look below at the picks of different surfboards it is possible to buy.
The shortboard is still probably the most popular choice of surfboard for the experienced surfer, this is because this type of board gives you a better performance and higher speed than the longboard. This makes the shortboard ideal for fast manouverable turns and tricks. The shortboard is not suitable for beginners as they are short, thin and unstable, which makes them difficult to balance on and as a novice you will usually want a more stable platform than a shortboard.

Used or New? The Different Types of Surfboards

Fish Surfboards - In summer or when the the surf is not very high you will need a surfboard which is suitable for these conditions. The answer for the shortboard is the fish surfboard, which is a short wide surfboard - great for getting maximum speed for even the smallest of waves. This is a very popular choice of surfboard in countries where they don't have big waves but still have an experienced surfing community.
The traditional Longboard surfboard has a very stable design which makes it an ideal surfboard for beginners. Due to its design it will catch all the waves so it is a firm favorite of the more knowledgeable surfer when conditions will not allow good surfing with a shortboard. The longboard surfboard is the original first used surfboard and although the designs, materials and shapes have changed the longboard surfboard is still a firm favourite with surfers around the world.
The Mini Mal - If you stand near the middle of the Mini Mal then you will get great stability and predictable handling and because the Mini Mal is quite light you can control the board more easily. This is great for beginners as it makes it easier to learn to surf. The Mini Mal is fantastic in choppy conditions or when the surf is not very big which allows surfers to keep surfing in difficult conditions for longer. The bottom of the Mini Mal can be shaped to give different characteristics such as a vee will iron out choppy conditions and concaves liven up the board for better performance in difficult condtions. Stand near the fins and you will get tight turns and a very accurate performance. All this means the Mini Mal is a great all round surfboard.

The Shortboard surfboard became very popular during the 1960's when the newer materials became more used in the production of surfboards people started using a surfboard which was only 6 or 7 feet in length these soon became known as shortboards and the reason they became so popular with the surfing communty is its ability to maneuver and change direction much quicker than other types of surfboard. There are some downsides due to its size the shortboard requires steeper and more powerful waves than other surfboards and catching the wave is much harder and requires more strength.
Due to these factors the shortboard is not for beginners and is generally a surfboard for experienced surfers. This type of board does not fair well in calm or small waves and if these conditions occur you will have to change your board for anther type this is why its best to own more than one surfboard. Most surfers will take at least two different surfboards to the beach when they are going surfing to make sure they cover all the different sea and weather states. This can be expensive but there are places where you can pick up cheaper boards, sites such as Amazon or eBay have boards both new and used. You maybe able to get a good bargain from your local surf shop who either are selling brand new boards at reduced prices or good quality used boards, just keep an eye out when you go surfing for any potential bargains.
