In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Professor Dumbledore gave Hermione Granger a very important book: a book of fairy tales by Beedle the Bard that revealed the symbol and myth of the Deathly Hallows.

Perhaps Beedle the Bard is like our Aesop?

Now, you can get the book, too.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard contains five fairy tales:

  • The Wizard and the Hopping Pot
  • The Fountain of Fair Fortune
  • The Warlock's Hairy Heart
  • Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump
  • The Tale of the Three Brothers
You'll recognize the last fairy tale from the 7th Harry Potter book, where it was printed in full.

However, this collector's edition brings you even more!

This beautiful collector's edition of "Beedle the Bard" is designed to look like the original hand-written edition bought by Amazon through an auction in December 2007. You can get a copy that includes all of the following:
  • A special case designed to look like a wizarding textbook. Hide your book in the Hogwarts library!
  • A velvet bag with J.K. Rowling's signature.
  • A replica cover of one of the original hand-written editions. This includes replica gemstones, a metal skull, metal corners, a metal clasp, and an emerald ribbon.
  • 10 new original illustrations. These cannot be found in the Standard Edition of "Beedle the Bard" or the original edition.
  • There is also a reproduction of J.K. Rowling's handwritten introduction from the original edition.
  • Notes and commentary from Professor Albus Dumbledore himself.
Furthermore, the net proceeds from the sale of this book go towards the Children's High Level Group, a charity co-founded by J.K. Rowling.

The Hand-Written "Beedle the Bard"

Only seven original copies in existence

J.K. Rowling handwrote and illustrated seven original copies of "The Tales of Beedle the Bard." It is said that she wanted to give a special gift to the six people who were most involved with the Harry Potter series to thank them. Since she was making six, she decided to also make a seventh copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, specifically for auction. The proceeds from the sale of that book would go towards The Children's Voice, a campaign of Children's High Level Group.

Each of the seven original editions of "Beedle the Bard" were handwritten and bound in a leather hardcover. Each book was also decorated with a different gemstone; the seventh book was decorated with moonstones. This "moonstone edition" was auctioned off at Sotheby's on December 13, 2007. It was purchased by Amazon for an unprecedented £1.95 million ($3.98 million), the most a children's book, or any "modern literary manuscript," has ever been sold up to that date and surpassing all initial estimates.

Rights to the stories of "Beedle the Bard" were not released so the book could not be widely reviewed after the sale. Amazon did hold a Beedle the Bard Ballad Writing Contest through which the winner, Rhiannon D. of Australia, gets to spend a weekend with the original edition.

I just love the Harry Potter universe too much not to look at these stories. Whether I'll like them? Who knows. I'd rather read about how Hermione, Ron and Harry grow up, conquer the ministry, get kids etc.
