The New York Jets Should Have Drafted A Different Team
The Jets have disappointed their fans for too many years and part of the blame goes to drafting the wrong players. Yes, every NFL team will make bad calls on draft choices, but if the Jets drafted some other key players instead of the duds they did select, the Jets probably would have given their fans much more to cheer about as they would likely win more games with more play makers. Let's take a look at how the New York Jets could have improved their franchise from the 2003 - 2006 NFL Drafts.

2003 NFL Draft

In round 2, the New York Jets selected Victor Hobson (LB) and was another good player, but not an elite play maker. The Jets should have drafted Lance Briggs (LB), Osi Umenyiora (DE), Anquan Boldin (WR) or Jason Witten (TE). B.J. Askew (FB) was taken in the 3rd round. It is difficult to judge a fullback's production, because they usually don't accumulate stats, but the fact that Askew only started six games during his four-year career with the Jets, then you can consider that Askew may have not been the best draft choice. Robert Mathis (DE), Terrence McGee (CB) and Asante Samuel (CB) were still on the draft board.
The Jets had no draft picks in round 4, but had two draft selections in round 5. They drafted Derek Pagel (S) and Matt Walters (DE) and neither guy started a game or played with the Jets after two seasons. Better draft options here would have been Cato June (LB), David Diehl (OT) or Dan Koppen (C).
The New York Jets, in round 6, picked Brooks Bollinger (QB). He was meant to be a backup quarterback, but even then failed to impress coaches during his three-year career with the Jets. The team should have used this draft pick on Tony Romo (QB) who went undrafted in 2003. Other undrafted stars like Antonio Gates (TE) and Kris Dielman (OG) were also free to sign with any team they wanted.

2004 NFL Draft

The Jets picked Derrick Strait (CB) in round 3 (they had no draft choice in round 2). Strait never became a play maker, so he was a wasted draft pick. The New York Jets would have been better off selecting Nathan Vasher (CB), Jared Allen (DE), Chris Cooley (TE) or Matt Schaub (QB).
Jerricho Cotchery (WR) was taken in the 4th round. Cotchery is a talented receiver and was a good draft selection. Now if the Jets can just get a quarterback to consistently get him the ball so he can make plays. The Jets also drafted Adrian Jones (OT) in round 4 and was only a starter for one year for the Jets. A better pick here would have been Michael Turner (RB).
In round 5, the Jets selected Erik Coleman (S). Coleman was a solid player for the Jets during his four-year stay with the team. In the 6th round, the Jets drafted another terrible pick with Marko Cavka (OT) as he never played a game for the team. The Jets should have taken Patrick Crayton (WR). Crayton is not an elite player, but at least he would have played some games.
The Jets did draft a future NFL star in round 7, Derrick Ward (RB). However, the Jets placed him on the practice squad and the New York Giants signed Ward to their team.

2005 NFL Draft

The New York Jets had a second pick in round 2, which was used to draft Justin Miller (CB). Miller didn't start many games and never developed into the play maker the Jets thought they were getting. A better option here would have been Justin Tuck (DE).
In the 3rd round, the Jets picked Sione Pouha (DT) and was another bad selection as he is not known to be a starter. The Jets should have drafted Trent Cole (DE), Kyle Orton (QB), Brandon Jacobs (RB) or Marion Barber III (RB). Kerry Rhodes (S) was selected in the 4th round. Rhodes has had solid production for the Jets and was a nice find in the 2005 NFL Draft. Rhodes was one of the Jets' better draft picks.
Andre Maddox (S) was taken in the 5th round. Madddox was another disappointing draft pick (he played in zero games for the Jets). Atari Bigby (S) would have been a better draft choice. Bigby, Josh Cribbs (KR), Ryan Grant (RB) and Robbie Gould (PK) were all undrafted free agents that any NFL team could sign to their squad. Gould is a Pro Bowl kicker, which really makes the Mike Nugent pick look even worse.

2006 NFL Draft
The Jets picked Kellen Clemens (QB) in round 2. Clemens is thought to be the future quarterback for the Jets since Chad Pennington was traded to the Miami Dolphins and Brett Favre's career is coming to an end. Clemens hasn't played much, so it is difficult to say if this was a good pick (if the Jets would have signed Tony Romo in 2003, the Clemens pick would not have been necessary). The Jets could have added a known superstar to their team since players like Devin Hester (KR), Greg Jennings (WR), Maurice Jones-Drew (RB) and Marcus McNeill (OT) were still available.

In round 3, Anthony Schlegel (LB) was drafted and was a terrible pick since he only played in four games for the Jets before getting cut after a year of service. The Jets should have selected Owen Daniels (TE). The Jets grabbed Eric Smith (S) at the end of the 3rd round. Smith isn't a play maker, so a better pick here would have been Brandon Marshall (WR).
The Jets had two picks in round 4. Brad Smith (QB) and Leon Washington (RB) were selected by the Jets. Smith is used more as a wide receiver than quarterback (often involved in trick plays). For what little he provides to the team, however, the Jets could have gotten a full-time play maker in a guy like Omar Gaither (LB). Washington has shown his explosiveness in games and can certainly be a starter in this league when Thomas Jones begins to fade.
In the 5th round, the Jets drafted Jason Pociask (TE), but he only played in four games during his two years with the team. The New York Jets would have been better off drafting Antoine Bethea (S). Drew Coleman (CB) was taken in round 6, and he is not an elite player. Marques Colston (WR) was still on the draft board.
