The Terrorism

Terrorism, as a method to achieve political aims has gained world wide popularity, but its motivating forces may be different. The main aim of the activities of the terrorists is to create conditions which may necessiate a change in the political set up or create law and order problem for the Government. Disturbed conditions will check progress and people are sure to lose confidence in the people in power. Working of democracy will become difficult and the increased foreign powers may fish in the troubled waters.

Anti - Terrorism

When organized and large scale terrorism first punched Europe, the nations were shocked. Terrorist groups like Germany's notorious Baadar Meinhof gang, Italy's Red Brigade and various Palestinian Organizations were early surprise and shock; plans were carefully developed to counter the terrorists. The effectiveness of such anti-terrorist squads has partly been responsible for the gradual turn down in terrorists' activities at least in Europe though the problem has not yet been licked. There was a time when many Europeans gravely felt that the terrorists threatened the democratic system and the way to tackle them is to suspend some of the rights at least provisionally. Council of Europe's report on the defense of democracy against terrorism said, "Terrorism aims to over throw and destroy pluralist parliamentary democracy and half the scope for political, economic and social development. Terrorism could in certain circumstances prompt states to take legislative, judicial or administrative measures that might prevent the very character of democracy. In the face of this threat we need reassert our conviction that democracy must overcome terrorism while remaining true to itself." Those experiences of Europe in this respect are appropriate to other countries. Terrorism is anti-democracy, anti-people and anti-progress. The government has to curb such activities by working out suitable methods. Each and every country can be taught much from other's experiences in this respect.

Now-a-days, approximately 70 percent of the world's terrorist activities occur in Asia and insurgent outfits function across the globe from this continent. The entire focus of global terrorism has changed from Europe to South Asian Countries. This focus of terrorism had mainly shifted because of the surfacing of three Asian giants - China, Japan and India - as global superpowers. Terrorist outfits like Lasker-e-Tayyaba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Al Qaeda, Harkatul Jihad-al-Islami (Huji), ULFA, Naxalites (India) and many others are centered in Asian countries. And these terrorist organizations are not aiming at any military power, but they are attacking innocent civilians.

Psychological and Emotional Problems

This is also the psychological and the emotional aspect of the problem which in many ways, interconnects with the economic and political. Psychologically speaking, the feeling of alienation has encouraged the terrorists. Indeed quite a few who may strongly disapprove of the terrorists and their methods still have a sneaking admiration for them largely because of their feeling of alienation. The most important thing is that democratic right should not be prostituted to perpetuate terrorism. Moreover terrorism cannot be finished with appeals or appeasement; it will have to be dealt with greater force and strength.

By appeals or appeasement

bba says:

We have always solved these issues by force. Or really we just created a temporary new equilibrium. Perhaps there could come about a more enlightened answer.

By greater force and Strength

TylaMac says:

I am dismayed that the current government in the United States thinks the way to defeat terrorism is to negotiate with it. It hasn't worked in Europe and it won't work here.

Read Wikipedia Article About Terrorism

Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion.

At present, there is no internationally agreed definition of terrorism.Angus Martyn, The Right of Self-Defence under International Law-the Response to the Terrorist Attacks of 11 September, Australian Law and Bills Digest Group, Parliament of Australia Web Site, 12 February 2002Thalif Deen. POLITICS: U.N. Member States Struggle to Define Terrorism, Inter Press Service, 25 July 2005 Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for an ideological goal (as opposed to a lone attack), and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants.

Some definitions also include acts of unlawful violence and war. The history of terrorist organizations suggests that they do not select terrorism for its political effectiveness. Individual terrorists tend to be motivated more by a desire for social solidarity with other members of their organization than by political platforms or strategic objectives, which are often murky and undefined.

The word "terrorism" is politically and emotionally charged,Hoffman, Bruce "Inside Terrorism" Columbia University Press 1998 ISBN 0-231-11468-0. Page 32. See review in The New York TimesInside Terrorism and this greatly compounds the difficulty of providing a precise definition. Studies have found over 100 definitions of ?terrorism?.Schmid, Alex, and Jongman, Albert. Political Terrorism: A new guide to actors, authors, concepts, data bases, theories and literature. Amsterdam ; New York : North-Holland ; New Brunswick: Transaction Books, 1988. The concept of terrorism is itself controversial because it is often used by states to delegitimize political or foreign opponents, and potentially legitimize the state's own use of terror against them. A less politically and emotionally charged, and better defined, term (used not only for terrorists, and not including all those who have been described as terrorists) is violent non-state actor.

Terrorism has been practiced by a broad array of political organizations for furthering their objectives. It has been practiced by both right-wing and left-wing political parties, nationalistic groups, religious groups, revolutionaries, and ruling governments. One form is the use of violence against noncombatants for the purpose of gaining publicity for a group, cause, or individual."politically
