Well, maybe not love, but Valentine's Day sure is! I still believe that true love is out there...just not for me yet! Haha! I don't believe in love at first sight, though.

The Story of Cupid

In Roman mythology, Cupid (Latin cupido) is the god of erotic love and beauty. He is also known by another one of his Latin names, Amor (cognate with Kama).

In popular culture Cupid is frequently shown shooting his bow to inspire romantic love, often as an icon of Valentine's Day.

In painting and sculpture, Cupid is often portrayed as a nude (or sometimes diapered) winged boy or baby armed with a bow and a quiver of arrows.

The Hindu Kama also has a very similar description. On gems and other surviving pieces, he is usually shown amusing himself with childhood play, sometimes driving a hoop, throwing darts, catching a butterfly, or flirting with a nymph. He is often depicted with his mother (in graphic arts, this is nearly always Venus), playing a horn. He is also shown wearing a helmet and carrying a buckler, perhaps in reference to Virgil's Omnia vincit amor or as political satire on wars for love or love as war.

So, to summarize....

St. Valentine was a priest who served in the 3rd century in Rome, Italy. After the Emperor Claudius banned marriage because he thought single men were better soldiers than married men, St. Valentine started marrying people in secret.

According to legend, when Valentine was discovered marrying people in secret, he was sentenced to death by the Emperor.

So what is it we are basically celebrating? Maybe I'm being cynical, but we are basically celebrating the death of love. Disagree? Join our duel below!

Do you believe the legend of St. Valentine?

Are we really celebrating the death of love, a.k.a., St. Valentine?

No, Valentine's day is more than that...

Yes, we're celebrating his death! How commercialized...

unique_freak77 says:

Yes! No one seems to know what it REALLY is! Hallmark just loves to take advantage of these things.

Hmmm...what's love got to do with it?
