Before I do give you some big free tips - I want to make sure you know that whatever methods you pick to use - it will take physical work from you.
Free tips on building muscle:
1) Make a decision - do you want to build muscle MASS, or lean muscle?
2) If you want to build muscle mass (get big) - then you want to do more heavy weight with less reps. This is very important to building muscle mass. 4-8 reps would be good for building muscle mass.
3) If you want to build lean muscle (little muscles, but ripped like crazy) - you want to do more reps with less weight. 12-25 reps would be good for lean muscle building.
4) Get on the proper diet for the body you are trying to achieve. Again The Truth About Building Muscle gives adequate information on this - as they are experts on the subject.
5) Getting proper sleep is SO underrated. I recommend getting at LEAST 6 hours of sleep. This is a time for recovery, and a time for your muscles to rebuild.
6) Another underrated aspect - drinking enough water. Water transports nutrients to your body and is essential for staying healthy and building muscle.
These are some important tips for building muscle.

Greg's Free Tips:
Here I will give free tips updated weekly, enjoy.
Tip #1 (August 18, 2007):
When building muscle there are two different main goals of most people. People either want to be ripped or big (massive). They go together, but I am talking main goals. A lot of people want both - but not all. I will describe the difference and also how to achieve both.
In order to get ripped (or toned for women), you want to do less weight with more reps. For example, you want to do 12-25 reps in each set. So for example for biceps, curling, pick a weight that you can do 12-25 times.
In order to get massive you want to do more weight with less reps. Again we will do the biceps example. For mass though you want to do somewhere between 4-12 reps, usually more towards 4-8 though.
So if you are looking to mainly get BIG (gain mass) and are not worried about being ripped (veiny and highly defined) - concentrate on doing mainly 4-8 reps.
If you are looking to get mainly ripped (or toned for women) do somewhere between 12-25 reps.
If you are looking for something in between try to do around 8-14 reps.
This is one of the most important things to consider when building your body the way you want it to be built. Personally I use both. Sometimes I will do more reps and sometimes I will do both. Over the years this has given me a nice mass build, along with being pretty ripped.
If I ever want to gain size I just start doing less reps. And if I ever want to get more ripped I start doing more reps (and of course cut down on the carbohydrates and fats - and eat more protein).
