The UEFA Cup

An amalgamation of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup and the Cup Winners Cup, the UEFA Cup football tournament is one of two major regional club competitions in Europe. Although the majority of the clubs participating in the UEFA Cup are champions of the various domestic knockout cup competitions in Europe, the tournament also absorbs a number of clubs eliminated in the early stages of the Champions League.

The UEFA Cup is a substantially bigger tournament than the UEFA Champions League. Hundreds of clubs participate in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Cup, with 80 clubs competing in the first round of the tournament proper. A total of 40 clubs contest the group stage of the UEFA Cup, before the remaining teams are eliminated in five knockout rounds.

The UEFA Cup final is scheduled for Wednesday 20 May 2009 with Shakhtar Donetsk up against Werder Bremen!

UEFA Cup History

The UEFA Cup is the product of two regional competitions contested by European clubs from the 1950s onwards, the Inter Cities Fairs Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup. As the older of the two competitions, the Inter Cities Fairs Cup is regarded as the predecessor to the UEFA Cup.

The UEFA Cup assumed its current identity in 1971 when UEFA took over the Inter Cities Fairs Cup and made several amendments to its format to increase the tournament's appeal. In 1999 UEFA merged the Cup Winners Cup with the UEFA Cup, creating a stronger pool of participants and forging a unique identity for the tournament.

Sükrü Saracoglu Stadium

The 2009 UEFA Cup venue was announced by UEFA on the 4th of October 2006. Stadiums throughout Europe put forward bids to host the UEFA Cup final, but the Sükrü Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, was eventually awarded the right to host one of the year's biggest football events.

The Sükrü Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul is one of only two stadiums in Turkey with a UEFA 5 star rating. This 50,000 capacity venue has a rich football heritage stretching back a century, and currently serves as the home of Fenerbahce, Turkey's most successful football club.
