The mayor

Once upon a time, there was one big village, with one little well. One day the mayor decided to do something about the water shortage. He opened up the opportunity to outside business.

The mayor made an announcement that two contracts would be available to supply the village with frash, clean water. The mayor thought having two contracts instead of one would create a bit of healthy competition and drive down prices in favour of the villagers.

Marlow and Jones

Marlow, a local resident, immediately saw the potential of having this contract, and so went to the mayor and signed right away. The second contract was signed by someone from outside the village who heard about the opportunity from their friend Lewis.

This person, Jones, didn't want to spend the rest of their life working for money, and immediately saw the potential of having this contract.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go...

Marlow set to work the very next day. He went out, bought two buckets, and started walking back and forth to the river one mile away. He was making money selling his labour from the very first day of work. He sold each bucketful to the village for £1, he could make £2 a trip, and take home an hourly wage of about £5.50 an hour. Marlow was pleased with this, and so carried on hauling buckets.

Jones wasn't interested in earning five pound and fifty pence an hour.

To Marlow's delight, Jones didn't show up that day. Or for the rest of the week! Soon, a whole month had gone by.

Marlow was delighted.

Marlow started to pay his teenage children to carry buckets alongside him, promising them a village-water monopoly for when they returned from university.

They were happy for the extra money, but didn't really want to spend the rest of their lives carrying buckets.

Because of his monopoly, Marlow raised his prices to £1.30 per bucket.

The villagers complained, but has no alternative.

90 Days

After 90 days, something incredible happened.

It was Jones.

It wasn't JUST Jones though.

It was Jones, and rolling behind was a construction team of 20 men, two large yellow diggers, 15 tonnes of metal piping on the back of 3 enormous lorries, two large cement mixer trucks, a site manager, and one portable toilet.

Jones had mobilised a construction army!

The pipeline

Seeing this impressive parade, Marlow went out and bought another two buckets.

Buckets with lids!

As Marlow quickened his pace and began carrying four buckets of water each trip, Jones's team started digging.

Within a few days, a mile long trench had been dug and piping was being installed.

It didn't take long.

Soon, gallons of water was rushing through Jones's new pipe and the villagers had an endless supply of fresh, clean water.

Marlow started to walk faster.

Marlow the failure

Jones priced the water at 5 pence per bucketful, and Marlow went out of business.

Marlow's idea of working hard for money had failed. He did make money, but every time he stopped working he stopped getting paid.

And that is no way to build a wealthy future.

Marlow had certainly been working HARD, but he had not been working SMART.

Jones, working smart, went to the next village to tell the next mayor what he had done in the first village... and Jones got another contract!

As news quickly spread, Jones soon had more requests for 1 construction team to handle.

Jones rolled from village to village laying water pipes for all residents.

The wealthy lifestyle

As Jones now delivered thousands of bucketfuls every single day, 24 hours a day!, all the 5 pence payments really did add up.

Jones didn't have to walk the length of the pipes every day in order to get paid. It was all automatic now.

Jones now had the time AND money to do those important things most people only do in their 70's after a lifetime of work.

Jones was mortgage-free, loved giving loads of money to loads of different charities, was free of all debts, and went on many amazing holidays all around the world several times a year.

Because Jones was working smart and had laid a good foundation, all Jones DID have to do was collect the money.

And Jones hired Marlow to do that for him.

The secret

One day, Jones started to feel a little bit sorry for Marlow. Only a little bit sorry, but sorry enough to want to help. After all, he was a good worker. He just didn't apply his skills properly.

He was doing things right, but he wasn't doing the right things.

Jones decided to enlighten him.

"Hey Marlow! I want to teach you something. I think you've learned it already, but you're just not sure of it yet."

"We both have exactly the same amount of hours per day, and we both had exactly the same contract..."

"It was what we each chose to do with our 24 hours that allowed me to lay the foundations for my guaranteed income. You chose to work for money, I chose to have money work for me. And in that choice lies the secret to wealth!"

"The secret to wealth, Marlow, is simply this one line: 'One good investment is worth a lifetime of labour.'. And that's it. All I did was apply that secret to the situation of our identical contracts."

Jones and Marlow

Marlow kicked himself!

If only he had known that sooner! His whole life would have been SO different!

Jones applied this knowledge and now has a stream of wealth that will continue and is not dependent on any one person.

All Marlow has is a bad back and a stack of empty buckets.

Jones's one good investment was worth Marlow's lifetime of labour.
