The Wizard of Oz: One of America's Most Beloved Films
"The Wizard of Oz" opened in theatres in 1939. Though it received mostly favorable reviews, box office receipts were disappointing. The film won an Oscar for Best Song of the Year with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and the movie was nominated for Best Picture of 1939. Several generations have grown up with "The Wizard of Oz," making it one of the most popular movies of all time.
Most of the cast members were responsive signers while living. Many would sign through the mail, free of charge. The immense popularity of "The Wizard of Oz" has pushed some of those easy autographs into high dollar collector items.

We're Off to See the Wizard
"We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz!" If you think fondly of these lyrics and the many other memorable quotes from the classic movie The Wizard of Oz , then check out the wide range of collectibles offered here.
The Wizard of Oz, starring the unforgettable Judy Garland, hit the big screen in 1939. Metro Goldwyn Mayer made the movie based on the Frank L. Baum children's book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written in 1900. The film's combination of memorable characters, brilliant songs, and use of Technicolor, has made the movie a part of American culture.
MGM decided to shoot the film after the success of another film also based on a children's book - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, in 1937. The plot is fantasy and known by heart to many; a 12 year-old Kansas girl named Dorothy gets swept up in a tornado with her dog, Toto. They, along with their house, land on a The Wicked Witch of the East in the fantastical Land of Oz. There, she meets the Munchkins and Glenda the Good Witch and inherits the magical ruby slippers. Dorothy starts on a journey to seek help from the Wizard of Oz. On her way, she makes three beloved friends - The Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. They have to confront the Wicked Witch of the West to make it to the Wizard, who in reality is just an ordinary man. The friends eventually realize everything they were looking for was already inside them. Dorothy wakes up and is at back home in Kansas. The movie ends with the famous quote, "there's no place like home!"
