All About The Wombats
The Wombats is a popular indie rock band from Liverpool in the UK. The band was formed back in 2003 but to date only one studio album has been released. Technically the band released its first album back in 2006, only in Japan though and it was there given the title of 'Girls, Boys And Marsupials'. One year later and the album 'The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation' emerged all around the rest of the world featuring many of the tracks that were included on the original Japan album. The album was a huge hit in the UK and also in Australia. The band has achieved moderate success in a number of different countries across the world, and with its fine display of uplifting indie music has brought much light to the lives of many. The band is currently signed to 14th Floor Records, the record label which released the band's debut album. Two new tracks are currently in the pipeline; an anti-Christmas track due out just before Christmas, and another single also which looks set to come out at some stage in the early New Year. The anti-Christmas track is to be given the title 'Is This Christmas?' whilst the track to be released in 2009 looks all set to be 'My Circuitboard City'.
The band has remained with the same line-up since forming in 2003 (somewhat of a rarity for band's these days), the three Wombats band members having met whilst attending the Liverpool Institute for Arts together. It's quite a lovely story that these three school friends should come so far together as a band, it's not been a particularly easy ride but the band now has a strong selling album behind it and the future is looking rosier by the minute.
According to the band's website; The Wombats started as a joke that the three members didn't want people to find funny. They'd wear hats with bells on to their gigs, start screaming in the middle of songs, and the idea was to kill the shows as much as possible and not to make people laugh. The band has come a long way since then though and in five short years has developed to become a popular band in all corners of the globe. Not one of the biggest indie rock bands out there, still one that has quite a sturdy fan base however and a band whose music is now appreciated by many.
As of September 3rd the band reported that it is currently recording the 'My Circuitboard City' track in the studio via Twitter, no further updates have since been announced however and who knows what the band will be getting up to next. No news has yet been announced about album number two, as the saying goes though; no news is good news, and I'm sure that it shan't be long before further updates take place and the band announces more exciting future plans. Fingers crossed for album number two, and let's hope that the band's second album can once more be highly impressive and a lot of fun to listen to.

The Wombats - A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation
A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation
Amazon Price: $13.98 (as of 11/30/2009)![]()
'A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation' is the fantastic first album from The Wombats; a thirteen track release of upbeat indie rock/pop punk tracks and one that is well worth listening to. Not all of the tracks present here are excellent, a lot of them are though and this therefore makes for an incredibly exciting overall listening experience. The music is energetic and fun, the band bounces through all of these tracks and although the lyrics are undeniably cheesy; the music is also incredibly catchy. It's hard not to like the upbeat energy that The Wombats debut album possesses here.
Released commercially were a number of top tracks such as 'Let's Dance to Joy Division', 'Moving to New York', and 'Kill the Director'; the quality doesn't end here however and a number of excellent album-only tracks also feature here. There are a few filler tracks, most albums have these though and there's not a single track present here which I'd ever suggest is bad as such. There's some absolutely amazing sing along anthems riddled throughout the album; tracks that make you want to get up, dance, and forget about all of your problems. As you listen to the music you can let your worries leave you and chill out to the wonderful tone of The Wombats.
When I first heard about this band I kept referring to them as The Wombles, my partner corrected me every time however and I soon learned to get the band's name right and not confuse them with children's novels/TV programmes. A note to all; always remember that the band's name is The Wombats, not The Wombles; getting this fact wrong could lead to much humiliation in front of your friends, family, and loved ones.
So what's so good about this album? Well, it's just a lot of fun to listen to. The band doesn't take itself too seriously and the music is just all about having fun and enjoying the sweet sounds that the band has to offer here. If you're familiar with the music of Scouting for Girls then similar rules apply here; the lyrics are often dreadful, the music incredibly simple, it works though and always the sound provided here is a lot of fun to listen to and will surely raise many a smile. The band offers up throwaway lines, cheesy one liners that will make you smile; the music is just fun really and if you like your music fast and fun then you can't go far wrong with The Wombats.
For fans of fun uplifting indie rock and pop punk then this album is most definitely worth a listen. It may not become your favourite album of all time, you're likely to play it a lot though and it's always sure to make you smile. Give this album a listen and I'm sure you won't regret the decision to do so.
