The Gospel Colors

A few years ago, our homeschool co-op used the theme of the Wordless Book for our Bible curriculum. Each child learned to tell the Gospel story, created a wordless book, and made a gospel colors bracelet. The older children memorized the Bible verses that went along with each color while the younger children learned the Wordless Book song.

I did a lot of researching on the internet for materials and ideas. I even made a couple printables when I couldn't find exactly what I needed. Some of the ideas presented here will work better in a large group setting, Sunday School or for outreaches. Other ideas work better one-on-one.

What is the Wordless Book?

The Wordless Book is a tool to help Christians tell others about God's plan of salvation.

History of the Wordless Book

Charles Spurgeon
C. Spurgeon

The Wordless Book is believed to have first been used by Charles Spurgeon in 1866 at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. He used a piece of black paper, red paper and white paper to share God's plan for salvation. The black page reminded him of his sin, the red represented Christ's blood shed for him, and the white page stood for the cleansing of his sins he received through Christ's sacrifice.

In 1875, D.L. Moody used the Wordless Book in Liverpool, England. He added a gold page to represent heaven.

Fanny Crosby, the beloved blind hymn-writer, used the Wordless Book to share with children. She would carry one in her purse and the children would beg her to read the story over and over again.

In 1895, Amy Carmichael used the Wordless Book to share the good news in India. She made a satin flag of gold, black, red and white. The flag was attached to an ox-cart which traveled to different villages. There she would tell the gospel story using the colors on the flag.

Today Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) prints Wordless Book materials. They added the green page to represent growth in Christ. CEF also added scriptures to go along with each of the colored pages.

Creating a Wordless Book

How to Make a Wordless Book

Materials:
-yellow paper
-black paper
-red paper
-white paper
-green paper
-blue -opt.
-purple - opt.

You can create your Wordless Book to be as big or as small as you would like. I was making a book for a toddler, so it is a little bigger in size. Here are the steps:

1. Cut your paper 4"x6".
2. Fold each paper in half like a book.
3. Decide what color you want to be the cover of the book. Some scripts start with the Gold page and end with the Gold page, others use Green. I opted for Green.
4. Glue the left side of the black page to the inside of the green page. (2nd photo)
5. Glue the right side of the black page to the back of the red page. (3rd photo0
6. Glue the other side of the red page to the back of the white page.
7. Glue the other side of the white page to the back of the yellow page. (4th photo)
8. Glue the other side of the yellow page to the other half of the green page.

Sounds confusing but it is easier than written.

You can make a book out of paper, felt, fabric, or colored foam. Your options are endless.

The Gospel Fuzzies

Sharing the Gospel with Young Children

One great way to share the gospel story with young children is to use puppets. It's even more fun when they can make their own Gospel Fuzzies glove puppet!

I created printables and other activities to go along with the Gospel Fuzzies. We used this unit as a Valentine Unit at our local homeschool co-op. You can click the image above to see what we did and to access the printables.

Wordless Book Nesting Cans

(great for young children)

Using nesting cans to teach the Wordless Book is a nice change from the traditional book or bracelet. Young children especially like retelling the story while stacking and arranging the cans. I created these cans to go along with the Wordless Book Song. More details on creating the cans can be found on Spell Outloud. You can view the video below on how the cans work with the song.

Making a Wordless Book Lapbook

(or just use as printables)

Another way to teach children more about the Wordless Book and growing in Christ is to create a lapbook. This would be a good option for a Sunday School class, homeschool, or co-op class. For more information on lapbooking check out Jimmie's Lapbooking Lens. Below are printables that you can use for a lapbook or just to use as reinforcement of what was learned. Click on the picture below to see JFeliciano's pictures of a finished Wordless Book Lapbook.
