Been Away For A While

But I'm Back...Big Time!

Hi:

Well, I've been a bad boy. I've been so busy that I've been away from this site for a while. Well, there was a good reason for it.

See, I've been completing my latest divinational product that I have finally released called Diceology.

If you'd like to check it out, I'll give you the site in a second, but first let me tell you a little about it and how it related to Astrology and other divinational sciences.

Diceology is the result of over 25 years of my life's work. I discovered this science purely by accident many years ago. After that one day (you can read the whole history of Diceology in my book) I was almost obsessed with getting to the higher meaning of this science and mastering it.

I've put my years of development of this science into a 6 volume series that you can pick up at the following URL:

http://www.diceology.com/

I promise you...it's like nothing you've ever seen in your life.

If you have any questions about Diceology at all, you can send an email to:

stevenwagenheim@diceology.com

Just put "Diceology Questions" in the subject and I'll answer any questions you have about it.

In the meantime, I'll be updating this lens and all my others more regularly now that I am not so busy.

To YOUR Divinational Success,

Steven Wagenheim

My Experience And Thoughts On Astrology

How Shirley Finnamore Made Me A Believer

My first experience with Astrology was back in the 1980s when a lady by the name of Shirley Finnamore did my astrological chart. And back then, the didn't have all the fancy pieces of software that we have today that whip up charts at warp speed. No, she did mine by HAND. To this day I am still impressed. And from that moment on, I was hooked.

Shirley offered to teach me but as I couldn't afford to pay her and wasn't going to take charity, I went out to learn on my own. She recommended some excellent books for me to get my hands on and I did. It was then that I learned just HOW difficult it was to actually do an astrological chart.

Since this part of the process is mostly mechanical, I eventually decided, once the software became available, to make use of it. I wanted to spend more of my time analyzing instead of creating.

Well, some 20 odd years later, I've analyzed more charts than I can count. But the thing that I found most interesting about all the charts that I have done, mostly for friends and family, is how intertwined many of them were.

What I mean by intertwined is this. Most of my friends were also friends with each other, mostly because they were the same personality types and shared many of the same interests. For example, almost all my friends were into music, which is why I eventually ended up playing in a band with a few of them. Well, in looking at their charts, I found many similarities that couldn't be just coincidental.

And yet, as the years went by, many of us drifted apart and our common interests changed. Why? Simple. Our charts were changing as the planets around us changed position. I became even more fascinated with this science, the more that I observed it.

In the articles to follow, I will share some of my most interesting readings, some things that I have learned, a little theory, a little instruction and whatever else I feel will help you to develop a love for and an understanding of this amazing occult science.

More to come.

Astrology - What's Your Sign?

The Best Way To Get Bounced From A Bar

Forget the age of Aquarius. I grew up during the age of bar hopping, going up to pretty girls sitting at that bar stool and coming out with that corny line, "What's your sign?" You can't even begin to imagine some of the looks I got. Most of them just chuckled and told me to get lost. Can't say I blame them. I was a real dork back then. Ironically, if I knew as much about Astrology then as I know now, I could have used that line to real advantage.

For example, instead of going up to a girl and saying "What's your sign?" I would have gone up to her and said something like, "Tell me your birthday and I'll tell you all about you." Now obviously, without doing her chart, which would have taken an enormous amount of time, this really wouldn't have been possible. But, knowing all the basic characteristics of each sign, praying that their rising signs didn't play too much havoc on their personalities, I probably could have told them enough generalities about themselves to be able to impress them at least somewhat. I mean let's face it, the average bar hopper knows very little about astrology.

Ironically, by the time I actually learned about astrology, I was already married and had no desire to ask a girl at a bar what her sign was. But I am going to ask YOU. What's YOUR sign? Do you know your characteristics? Do you know your rising sign? Do you know what makes you tick? What is it that even brought you here?

Below, you will find a poll to tell me what your sign is. I'm curious to see how many of each sign I get to this site who actually take the time to let me know who they are. My gut tells me, based on what I know about the various signs, that I am going to get a few signs that will dominate the poll and a few signs that will be totally absent. Why?

Well, if you're deep into astrology, you know that there are personality types that love to show off their stuff. They need to show the world, "Hey world, here I am, and need to be a part of everything." These are the people who are going to let me know who they are. Then there are those personality types that are very private and keep to themselves. They're not going to share their feelings, or at best, will do so reluctantly. There are going to be, of course, a number of people who will look at the poll results just to see who is signing in, and yet will not share with the others.

I have always been fascinated by human behavior, and what I learned from astrology has only reinforced what I learned from my psychology and sociology classes in college. If you ever have a chance, observe people. I'll bet that as you get better at the art of astrology, you'll be able to tell most people's signs, or at least narrow down the possibilities, just from observing them. I got very good at this over the past 5 years or so. It actually scares me when I talk to a Leo for about 10 minutes and listen to him tell me how great he is, and obviously basking in the spotlight, and then I calmly ask him, "Are you a Leo?" and he smiles at me and doesn't answer. Leos are very proud and won't ever admit to being found out like that, and in most cases, will not answer me, try to change the subject and throw me off guard, but they know. They know I'm on to them.

Any Leos reading this, I love you guys and gals. You are the life of the party and this world would not be as fun a place without you. My father in law is a Leo and he's one of my favorite people on the planet, so please don't get the idea that I don't like Leos, but they are definitely characters.

Anyway, if you want to let me know who you are, I'd love to know.

And if you're a Leo, don't worry, I won't tell anybody that you filled out my poll.

It'll just be our little secret.

Well, until somebody actually checks the results. LOL.

Astrology Corner - Compatibility Issues

Should You Marry Or Date Just By Somebody's Sign?

Let's face it, compatibility is one of the big things with Astrology. "Who's my best match?" "Should I go out with a Scorpio?" "Is the Leo in my life being faithful to me?" The questions go on and on and on. I can't tell you how many people ask me if they should marry this guy or gal because they're not sure if they're compatible. I then ask why and they don't tell me something like, "Well, he or she doesn't pick up after him or herself." No, they tell me things like, "Cause he or she is Libra."

Is that like some kind of disease?

Okay, I don't mean to go on a rant here, and yes, there are going to be signs that you're more compatible with than others, but to solely base all your decisions on who to marry on their sign is a total joke. Remember, there is more to this than just a person's sign. Each sign has different characteristics based on their rising sign, the position of the other planets and so on. That's why two Scorpios can be so different.

I'll give you a perfect example. A friend of my best friend Paul is a Leo. He's a smart aleck, thinks he's the life of the party, a wise guy and a number of other things that I just don't even want to print here. He's simply not a very nice person.

Now, my father in law is also a Leo. He's very smart, kind, wise, not a wise guy, but wise, and is probably one of the nicest people you'll want to meet. I find it so hard to believe that both of these people are Leos. Now, I haven't had the chance to do charts for either of these people. My father in law doesn't believe in that stuff and my friend's friend, well, let's just say he'd rather be boiled in oil than be anywhere near me. But I have no doubt that if I did both of their charts, I'd find some amazing differences.

My point is this, yes, there are going to be many cases where two signs are just not going to get along, at least on the average, but you can't judge a relationship JUST on what somebody's sign is. I actually know people who will ask a person his sign before even deciding whether or not to go out with that person. Is that insane or what?

Anyway, I am including a poll at the end of this post asking if you think the sign of a person matters in a relationship. I am dying to know what you fellow psychics think.

You already know how I feel.

Is YOUR House In Order?

My mother used to say to me when I was growing up, "Before you start criticizing others, make sure your own house is in order." Now, she wasn't talking about Astrology, but the same principal does apply to your Astrology chart. Unfortunately, with Astrology, you don't have any control over what planets fall in what houses. However, you do have control over how you react to the situation. It's like the old saying, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Well, this discussion is going to briefly focus on how to make lemonade when you planets and your houses don't exactly like each other.

The first thing you need to do, and I know this is going to seem excessive to some, is to do a chart at least once a month to see where the planets are. Naturally, the outermost planets don't change so much, but the planets like Mercury, Mars, Venus and of course our moon, change quite often. So you're going to want to keep an eye on these babies. At least I know I do.

And the good thing is, with today's technology, and the programs that are available to do charts in a flash, you don't have to spend a lot of time on this. The creation of the chart is almost instantaneous. The interpretation is something else altogether. But still, if you have some time to kill, you might want to do this at least once a month like I do.

Why? Well, let's suppose you've got a planet inside a house that indicates you're going to have financial problems. You might want to refrain from going to the track or the casino that week, especially if you are a compulsive gambler. For example, if Venus is in your second house with negative aspects, you are more likely to make bad financial decisions.

The point is, by knowing where the planets are, you can help avoid doing things that may adversely affect you current situation. I personally take these things very seriously. The last thing I want to do is something stupid that could have been avoided if only I had looked at my houses and the planets in them.

Now, I was born November 11, 1957 at 10:30 PM in good old Newark, NJ. So, if I go to my trusty Astro123 and run my chart for today, June 17, 2007, I come up with some interesting data. I'm not going to go through my whole chart. Just a couple of points of interest.

Right now, Mars is in my 7th house. Now, normally, my wife and I get along just fine and I usually let her have her way. However, I am right now concerned about a decision she's making concerning her health and I really don't agree with it. However, Mars in my 7th house tells me that arguing with her right now, which is what I want to do, is not going to solve the problem. So I am biting my tongue and hoping that she knows what she's doing.

At the same time, Venus is now in my 10th house, so this is a great time for me to try to use my charm in order to advance my career or any other aspirations that I might have. Unfortunately, I don't normally take advantage of these situations so most likely Venus is going to come and go without much fanfare.

By taking the time to go through your planets and houses, you can avoid disaster or take advantage of situations that might arise.

So, is YOUR house in order?

Getting The Short End Of The Long Planets

Let me start off by saying that this entire post is going to be one long rant. So if you're not in the mood to hear somebody complain, you probably want to skip this whole thing. Of course, you just might find it amusing. Either way, the rant is coming, so buckle your seat belts.

I hate Uranus, I hate Neptune and I especially hate Pluto. Why oh why do these planets have to even exist in our Astrological lives? And don't even go off about how Pluto isn't really a planet because some stupid scientist says it isn't. Bull feathers! And don't even get me started on this new planet Eris. Wasn't there some stupid movie from the 50s called "The Brain From Planet Eris?" Or maybe it was Arous. Anyway, it doesn't matter. It's besides the point. See how upset I am over Uranus, Neptune and Pluto?

Okay, why am I upset? Well, for those of you who are really into Astrology, you know that these planets move VERY slowly from one house to another. When you're born, these planets take up a great deal of time in the houses that they were born into. By the time they move out, you're quite set in many of your ways. This could be hazardous to your health.

I mean come on. What if you're born with Neptune in your first house? What if you don't want to be a caring, sensitive person? What if you're sick of crying over phone commercials when the kid calls his mom for Mother's Day? What if you don't want to be that way? Well, if you were born with Neptune in your first house, you're probably going to be a very sensitive soul for quite some time.

And what if you have Pluto in your third house when you're born? That curiosity of yours could get you into a ton of trouble. Hey, you know what they said about curiosity and cats. Last thing I want is to have that need to poke my nose into every nook and cranny on this planet, even when I know that I'll probably end up getting it blown off by some lunatic with a sawed off shotgun because I looked at his daughter the wrong way.

And heaven forbid, what if I'm born with Uranus in my fifth house? We all know how reckless people with Uranus in their fifth house can be. I mean, we're talking living on the edge here. And let's not even get into how independent these people are. They need their freedom big time. Living alone for 90 years isn't being lonely, it's being in heaven. Well, what if I don't want to be independent? What if I want to lean on somebody because I'm sick of being independent and reckless to boot. Heck, I'll end up getting myself killed and have nobody to bury me.

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating just a bit here. I mean after all, even Pluto, which is the slowest moving planet in the Zodiac, only stays in a house for about 10 years. So what's 10 years of your life with Pluto stuck in your third house? So what if from birth to age 10 you're curious as all get up? I mean, this is only the age where you don't have enough sense to know that fire burns. So what if your fingers get a little fried? By the time you're in your 20s you'll have enough money to pay for all that cosmetic surgery you'll need.

All kidding aside, the outer planets do have a strong impact on our lives for great stretches at a time. That is why I personally have found myself getting into certain ruts for years on end. Trying to get out of them is sometimes close to impossible because of the influence that the outer planets have on me. Then all of a sudden, one day, I'll have a whole new outlook on certain things, or I'll have new interests. Inevitably, I'll go do my chart and see that an outer planet has just moved into a new house. It's almost scary.

Do YOU know where YOUR outer planets are? Are they making a mess of your life or turning it into something wonderful?

I'm putting up a poll to see how many people are content with their outer planet movements.

This should be VERY interesting.

Bringing Your Own Vibes To The Reading

The more I learn about Astrology, the more I realize how little I know. Of all the occult sciences, there is no question that Astrology is the most complex. Even basic Astrology takes years to wrap your brain around. But the other day, I read a fascinating article about Astrology and your own life experiences. I found it very interesting how the author discussed how we can't help but bring our own emotional baggage into each reading. This got me to do a lot of thinking, not just about each Astrological reading that I do but about any reading I do in any of the disciplines. However, I am going to confine this discussion to Astrology specifically.

The best way to explain my point here is with examples.

Just recently, I did somebody's Astrological chart not only for the time of their birth but for the current day. I looked to see what planets were in what signs and houses and I tried to get an overall feel for where this person's life was going. My subject, in particular, was interested in what planet was in his 7th house as he is very relationship conscious.

At the time of his birth, Mercury was in his 7th house. This shows that he is somebody who seeks out an intellectual equal and a lot of give and take in a relationship. Doesn't sound very romantic, I know. And given that this person is a Taurus, I know he's not going to bend on his feelings. Well, I took a look at what planets was in his 7th house at the time of the reading. Well, low and behold, it was also Mercury. As I looked at the rest of the chart, even though my intellect was telling me one thing, my gut was telling me that there was something more to him asking about what planet was in his 7th house than just curiosity.

To make a long story short, and this is what my gut told me which was confirmed when I confronted him, it turned out that he had met a girl who was absolutely NOT his type at all. She was wild and crazy and, quite honestly, a bit of an air head. But something about her intrigued him. I asked him what the problem was. He told me that he saw nothing good coming out of a relationship with her as they were so different. And yet...

He didn't have to finish the and yet part. For the first time in his life, he had fallen in love with somebody simply because of chemistry and not because she wasn't his "type". He had spent so long looking for that "perfect" partner that fit his mold of what she should be like that he forget that people are human beings and sometimes we like people even if they're no good for us intellectually.

This is also true about Astrological readings. Sometimes we know, in spite of all the "technical" aspects of the reading, that there is something more going on that goes way beyond the planets.

The reading I had done showed no signs that he had or was about to meet anyone that would become a part of his life. Yet, I saw it. I saw it as if somebody had reached a hand up from the middle of the table, grabbed me by the forehead and shook me until I figured out that I had to stop looking at the chart.

So this is my point, and I hope you will take this to heart if you truly want to improve in the area of divination. Certainly don't ignore the facts. But when your gut tells you something, go with it. You'll find, as you do this more and more, that you are right more often than you are wrong.

Oh, and by the way. This person and that girl are now engaged to be married.

Love works in strange ways.

The Planet You Most Identify With

We all know that your sign is determined by what sign the sun is in when we are born. We also know that our rising sign is determined by what sign the moon is in when we are born, and thus becomes a sign that has a great influence over our life. But what planet do you REALLY identify with? When you study the influences of each planet, what planet do you feel a sense of belonging to? It doesn't necessarily have to be the sun or the moon.

For example, in my case, Mars was in Scorpio when I was born, but I in no way identify with that planet. I am not a fighter, or for that matter, a very strong person. I identify more with Venus, which was in Capricorn on the day of my birth. I consider myself one who seeks peace and harmony. Plus, I am a die hard romantic. Most people would say that Venus would be one of the least likely planets to associate with me. This is just living proof that many of us hide our true selves from others. I am as guilty as the next, probably because I don't want to expose myself to being taken advantage of, so I put up a strong front.

A friend of mine is a Pisces with Cancer rising. Mercury was in Pisces at the time of his birth, but trust me, this guy is no thinker and his communication skills are almost non existent. Logic and reason are not even a part of his vocabulary. My friend more closely connects with Neptune as he is dreamer. He spends more time fantasizing about things than living in the real world. Sometimes I wonder how he even functions. Neptune so controls his life that it's almost frightening.

My wife, who is a Taurus, is really ruled by Saturn. She's very responsible and sticks to rules and regulations. Thank goodness, because I can be quite flighty. Saturn just happened to be in Capricorn and her second house when she was born. This has turned her into a hard worker and somebody who needs to achieve financial security. Yes, that's my wife. As a result, after 25 plus years as a school teacher, she is making a 6 figure salary, will have a pension that's quite sizeable, and a tax shelter that's almost obscene.

The truth of the matter is, even though we all have our signs and rising signs, sometimes one planet can make all the difference in our lives. This is not always true, but in many cases it is.

So, what planet do YOU most identify with?

Purist Vs Technology

I know this is going to be a very touchy and controversial subject with a lot of Astrologists. I can certainly understand it. So I'm going to throw this out there and see what you all think about what I'm about to discuss. Basically the question comes down to this...

"If you're doing an Astrology chart, should you do it the old fashioned way or is it okay to use computer programs to do the chart for you?"

Okay, before I even begin to give you my opinion on this subject, let me qualify this whole thing by saying this. If you don't have a solid foundation in Astrology, no computer program is going to produce a chart for you that you're going to be able to understand, let alone interpret. You need to know what you're doing, meaning that you need to be able to do a chart on your own. And here's why I believe that.

What if you're doing this for a living and suddenly your computer crashes? You've got a client who you've promised a chart for in 3 days and you're in a situation where if you're going to get it done, the only way is by doing a chart by hand. Your computer won't be repaired for a week. Without the solid knowledge of Astrology that you need to do a chart, you're pretty much sunk.

Having said that, I strongly believe that IF you have that knowledge, it is perfectly acceptable to do a chart using a computer program. The reason is because ultimately, you still have to do the interpretation of the chart. Sure, there are programs that will do that for you, but I find that few of them are really accurate in that respect. Besides, I want to include my own personality and thought process in the reading.

Having a computer create a chart for you is pretty much the same thing as using a calculator to add up the numbers in your name in order to compute your Destiny Number. You're going to get the same number whether you use a calculator or add them up on a piece of paper or in your head. Either way, after you get the Destiny Number you still have to interpret it.

Moving over to the field of mathematics, since my wife is a math teacher, there are programs that will allow you to enter in vectors and draw a graph from them. However, you still have to be able to interpret those graphs after they're created.

Considering that a chart could take hours to do and ultimately you're going to come up with the same data as if you used a computer program, which will give you the same chart in seconds, I personally don't see anything wrong with creating the chart in this manner as long as you do the interpretations on your own.

So what do you think?

Do you agree?

Below you'll find a poll where you can vote on this.

The results should prove to be very interesting.

The Mask We Wear

I have to admit, when it comes to reading people and trying to figure out their sign just by speaking with them for a while, many times when I guess, it turns out to be wrong. I admit it. I'm terrible at guessing sun signs. However, when I go home and do a chart for these people, at least the ones who were gracious enough to give me the details of their birth, what I ultimately find out is that I have guessed their rising sign or the mask that they wear.

This is actually a sad testimony to the state of our world when it comes to relationships. So many of us are so afraid to be ourselves in the presence of strangers, or even people they've known for quite some time. The mask that we wear eventually becomes one that we're unable to take off. I too find myself putting on a face for those who I don't know very well. Heaven forbid that they found out how strange I really am.

But back to Astrology, as that IS the topic at hand.

When getting to know somebody on a professional level, assuming that you are going to do an Astrological chart for this person, what I try to do is take a very long hard look at their rising sign.

Why?

Because if I am going to do business with this person,. even though I do these readings for free, I want to be prepared for the personality that I am most likely going to have to deal with. Every person is going to expect different things when it comes to the demands of your time, even if you are doing this out of the goodness of your heart. If I find that a person's rising sign is one that will most likely be very demanding of my time (we all know who these people are) I will be on the lookout for it. I don't pre-judge people. But I'm not naive either. My time IS valuable to me and when I give of it freely, I expect my generosity not to be taken advantage of.

How often am I right?

Sadly, quite often. People put on their masks almost the minute they meet me. It's almost like they're trying to test me to see if I really can read people through their Astrological charts. I won't mention what rising signs do this the most because I don't want to offend anyone, but it's usually the same ones over and over.

People are SO predictable.

If you've done your own chart, or if you haven't, get it done and take a good look at your rising sign. See if it's a mask that you wear for the world more often than not. You might be surprised to find that the "you" underneath the "real you" isn't really "you" at all, but just the "you" that the "real you" wants others to believe IS the "real you."

Confusing?

Imagine what it's like for an Astrologer who meets a Scorpio with Cancer rising.

It's like Jekyll and Hyde at the Circus, or as Fredric March said in the laugh riot of a movie "Nothing Sacred" from 1937...

"Well he's got a different quality of charm. He's sort of a cross between a ferris wheel and a werewolf."

Are you wearing YOUR mask today?

Famous People Who Share My Sun Sign

I was born on November 11, 1957.

I'm a Scorpio and darn proud of it. We're a tough bunch of Joe's and can handle just about anything that's thrown at us. We're also sexy as heck. But that's another thing altogether.

I was always curious to see what famous people I shared my sun sign with and wondered if there were any who I really admired.

Here's my list of my top 10 people who share my sun sign. I admire these folks probably more than anybody else I can think of born between October 23 and November 21.

Number 10 - Bo Derek

I tried to keep this list away from cheesecake, but Bo Derek was absolutely one of the most incredibly sexy women alive during my days as a teenager. Nobody else could have been in the movie "10" but her. If I was stranded on an island and single, she'd be the one I'd want to be stranded with.

Number 9 - George Patton

One of the most outspoken military heroes of all time. Patton wasn't afraid to say or do anything. He got into more trouble than any other military man in history, especially during WW II. If it weren't for his brilliant leadership, the allies would not have won that war.

Number 8 - Sally Field

I watched Sally Field grow up from the "Flying Nun" to play such powerful roles as "Norma Ray". I have never seen an actress so completely reinvent herself the way this woman has. And now, with her performance in "Brothers and Sisters" she reinvents herself yet again.

Number 7 - Danny Devito

All you had to do was watch the TV show "Taxi" to know why Danny Devito is on this list. He WAS Louie Depalma. Probably one of the greatest supporting characters in the history of TV sitcoms. Considering what Danny had to overcome to make it to where he did, I think he deserves to be on this list with the greatest.

Number 6 - John Cleese

The only one from Monty Python to really go beyond those days. Cleese is one of the funniest men alive. His performance on "3rd Rock From The Sun" with John Lithgow was just priceless. There isn't a time that I don't watch him that I'm not laughing so hard that I'm in tears afterwards.

Number 5 - Charles Bronson

Even before Bronson was in the "Death Wish" movies, he had many memorable roles in several TV shows, including "Combat" which was one of my favorite shows from the 60s. Bronson was the perfect character actor, which is why he could play just about anybody. There will never be another one like him.

Number 4 - Joan Sutherland

I grew up listening to opera because of my mother and nobody sang like Joan Sutherland. I remember hearing the duet she did with Marilyn Horne in "Aida" and being totally blown away. Sutherland truly had one of the greatest voices in the history of grand opera.

Number 3 - Will Rogers

Will Rogers said he never met a man that he didn't like. Rogers was the absolute epitome of the word "gentleman" and will probably be remembered as one of the nicest men to ever walk the face of the Earth.

Number 2 - Walter Cronkite

I remember when JFK was shot and Cronkite reported that he had died. There never was before, nor has there been a news reporter with the class of Walter Cronkite. You don't have people like him today. They broke the mold with Cronkite.

Number 1 - Johnny Carson

What more is there to say? This man graced our homes for decades. The Tonight Show was the one thing that you used to stay up late to watch. He was funny, gracious to his guests and the perfect host. Jay Leno is okay, but he's no Johnny Carson. For that matter, there will never be another one like Johnny again.

The Days Of The Week

I thought this would be something that would be fun to share because very few people are really aware of this.

Astrology is really into more things than most people realize. One of those things is the 7 days of our week. If you're wondering how this is and you're scratching your head trying to figure it out, a little story is in order.

Back in ancient times, we didn't have all the planets that we have now. Well, we had them. We just didn't know that they existed. The fact is, there were five planets that were discovered before the rest of them, not counting our own Earth. If you add to those first five planets our sun and moon, that comes out to the seven bodies that the 7 days of our week come from.

Curious as to what they are?

Here you go.

Sunday - Named after our sun.
Monday - Named after our Moon.

Those two are obvious. The next one isn't so obvious. Tuesday comes from the French Mardi, which comes from the planet Mars. So this one is a little hard to place as is Wednesday, which comes from the French Mercredi, which represents the planet Mercury.

Thursday is another one that comes from the French word Jeudi, which represents the planet Jupiter. The last word from the French, vendredi, represents the planet Venus and means Friday in English.

Saturday is the only other obvious one in addition to Sunday and Monday. This last day of the week of course represents the planet Saturn.

It wasn't until many years later that the planets Neptune, Uranus and Pluto were discovered.

So there you have it. This is why the 7 days of our week are named as they are.

Are YOU On The Cusp?

Lots of people think that because they were born on a certain day of the year that they were born on the cusp of a certain sign. While this is technically true to an extent, there is more to being born on the cusp than just the day you were born. I'm going to point out some other factors that affect if you truly were born o the cusp of another sign. Some of this stuff may just surprise you.

First, for those who don't know exactly what it means to being born on the cusp, let's say for argument sake you were born on July 23. That is the first day of Leo, or as we say, on the cusp. However, it is only one day away from July 22, which is Cancer. What most people don't know is that depending on what year it was and what hour of the day you were born, you might even have been born in the last degree of Cancer. In other words, you might have some Cancer characteristics in you. See, the sun doesn't move into its new sign at the same time every year. So your birth hour has a lot to do with how much of the previous or next sign you have in you.

Astrologers have different opinions about whether or not somebody was born on the cusp of the previous or next sign. Some say it has to be within one day and others say that it can be as many as two days away from the next or previous sign. No doubt, these arguments will go on until the end of time.

But the big question is simply this. When somebody is born on the cusp, what sign are they really? Well, the only way to truly answer that is to observe the person's behavior. It is quite possible for somebody who has been born on the cusp to display characteristics of both signs. This is why it is often very hard to tell exactly what sign a person is. Add their rising sign to the mix and that makes things even harder.

If you were born on the cusp, observe your behavior and compare it to the typical behaviors of the sign before or after yours, depending on which end of the cusp you were born, beginning or end.

You may be quite surprised at what you find.

What's An Aspect?

One of the most confusing things for those first starting out learning the science of Astrology is the aspect. I can certainly understand this as my first dealings with Astrology also left me a bit confused when it came to aspects. Well, I'm going to try to explain them as simply as possible here. Naturally, this column will only go into so much detail as aspects can get quite complicated. But you should get a pretty good idea from what you're about to read of what aspects are.

Simply put, an aspect is the relationship between two planets and how many degrees apart they are. If you look at a horoscope circle, you will notice that it is 360 degrees all the way around. The planets themselves fall within that circle. Depending on where they fall, they form different aspects, or degrees of separation. Naturally, because the number of degrees apart between planets can be anything from 0 degrees to 180 degrees. there are obviously tons of aspects. Because of this, we only deal with the major and minor ones for the purpose of Astrological divination. These major and minor aspects are 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, 90 degrees, 120 degrees, 135 degrees, 150 degrees and 180 degrees.

Now, there is some wiggle room, as I like to call it, for each of these aspects. For example, planets that are 60 degrees apart don't have to be exactly 60 degrees apart to be considered a 60 degree aspect. They're allowed a plus or minus difference of 6 degrees. So anything between 54 degrees and 66 degrees would be considered a 60 degree aspect.

To further simplify this, we've given names to the various aspects so we don't have to say that, for example, Mars and Saturn are at 60 degrees. In this case we'd say that Mars is sextile Saturn. Eventually, you'll learn that sextile means 60 degrees apart.

In order for you to learn the various aspects, I'll publish them here with the degrees of separation and their names. I'll also include their plus and minus factor.

Conjunction - 0 degrees apart, plus/minus 10 degrees.
Semisextile - 30 degrees apart, plus/minus 2 degrees.
Semisquare - 45 degrees apart, plus/minus 2 degrees.
Sextile - 60 degrees apart, plus/minus 6 degrees.
Square - 90 degrees apart, plus/minus 9 degrees.
Trine - 120 degrees apart, plus/minus 9 degrees.
Sesquisquare - 135 degrees apart, plus/minus 2 degrees.
Quincunx - 150 degrees apart, plus/minus 2 degrees.
Opposition - 180 degrees apart, plus/minus 9 degrees.

Those are the main aspects that you'll be dealing with.

Great, but what does all this mean? What does it matter if Mars is sextile Saturn? Well, it matters greatly. See, some aspects are good, some are so-so and some are just plain bad. For the Astrologer, if he knows that there is going to be a certain aspect that is generally considered bad, he's going to want to avoid certain activities relating to the planets involved with these aspects.

For example, if Mars is in opposition to Saturn, which is about as bad as it gets, you probably want to restrict travel at this time of any activity where you're prone to getting into accidents.

So, which aspects are good and which ones are bad?

Well, here's the general chart.

Conjunction - 0 degrees apart - Most powerful. Usually good, but not always.
Semisextile - 30 degrees apart - Mildly favorable.
Semisquare - 45 degrees apart - Mildly adverse.
Sextile - 60 degrees apart - Harmonious and favorable. But do require effort.
Square - 90 degrees apart - Challenging and stressful. Squares place obstacles in our path.
Trine - 120 degrees apart - Most harmonious aspect. No effort is required, but too many make you lazy.
Sesquisquare - 135 degrees apart - Mildly adverse. Similar to semisquare.
Quincunx - 150 degrees apart - Unpredictable. Can be good or bad.
Opposition - 180 degrees apart - Unharmonious. This is as bad as it gets.

Naturally, all this is quite simplified, but it should give you a good foundation on aspects.

We'll explore this subject more at a later date.

The Earliest Astrologers

If you're wondering who some of the most famous early astrologers were, I'm going to share with you some information about 3 of the most famous.

Pythagoras (580 - 500 BC)

The years are approximate. The name might bring back some memories of learning the Pythagorean theorem in school. Well, yes, Pythagoras was a great mathematician. What you probably didn't know, because they don't teach you this stuff in school, is that Pythagoras was also an Astrologer. Unfortunately, he wasn't as well known for Astrology as he was for his other works, which included the musical scale. That's right, he gave us that too.

Nostradamus (1503 - 1566)

Nostradamus is the guy who predicted all the bad things that are going to happen in our lifetime and beyond. Well, I don't know if you believe in all that stuff or not, but the key point is, he based all his predictions off of Astrology. That's right. By looking at the planets and by calculating where they would be during these years, he came up with all of his predictions, which included world wars and nuclear bombs. Maybe this guy wasn't such a crackpot after all.

Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727)

Yes, the guy who sat under the apple tree, got conked on the noggin and came up with gravity. Well, believe it or not, Isaac Newton was also an Astrologer. During this time, many people who were into the sciences also studied the stars. It was very common to do back then. Even though he did much study, most, if not all, of what he learned was ignored by the "conventional" sciences. The ironic thing is that today, many people use the things that Newton discovered to discount his findings on Astrology.

The point is, even with great mathematicians and scientists delving into the world of Astrology, most of our modern world discounts their theories.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Good To Bad Or What?

As you know, when you're born, the planets are in certain positions. Now, while it is true that the inner planets change their positions in your chart more frequently, the outer planets show very little movement for many years. This brings up an interesting discussion. Assuming that your outer planets, at your birth either had a positive or negative influence on your life, which would you prefer early on? Would you rather go through difficult times early on or face them as you get older? I am going to play devil's advocate for both arguments and let you decide. It isn't as easy as you might think.

Let's say you start out with the outer planets in a favorable position and your early years are relatively easy. We are assuming that the inner planets aren't playing too much havoc. Certainly your early years will be pleasant. You'll most likely grow up to be a well balanced human being and with it have a relatively pleasant disposition.

But what happens when this person gets older? If they weren't exposed to much adversity early on, will they be able to deal with it later in life? How will they react to problems? I have personally found that many people who had wonderful childhoods ran into severe problems as they got older because they didn't know how to deal with adversity.

Now, let's look at the opposite end of the spectrum. Let's say you have a great life later on. Your later years are filled with joy and happiness. You're prosperous, have a great home life and for the most part have a wonderful life in general.

What this means is that during your young and formative years, you had a rough time. Again, from my experience, many kids who have a rough time growing up, never make it to late in life without some serious baggage. Some have ended up in prison, others weren't so lucky. Sure, if you make it out of your youth alive and actually survive the hard times, you'll probably end up as a well rounded and adjusted person.

As you can see, both scenarios have their problems.

So, my question to you is simple. Which would you rather have? Easy growing up or easy later in life?

You can cast your vote in the poll below.

The 4 Phases Of The Moon

Unlike the other planets of the zodiac, the moon is unique in that it has phases, 4 of them to be exact. I'm going to cover each of these phases so you can get a basic idea of what they mean. The moon probably has more influence over our lives than any other planet because of the various phases it goes through.

The first phase is the early crescent or New Moon. This is called the young maiden. This moon is actually represented by Taurus the bull. It also corresponds to the myth of Diana the Hunter. The significance of this moon is that it represents all the possibilities that are before us.

The second phase is the waxing or First Quarter Moon. This moon represents a young woman just beginning to flower. This includes the mythical Persephone. In case you don't remember her from Greek mythology, she was the one who was taken away by Hades at the peak of her beauty because he could no longer resist her. This moon is linked to Aries the Ram, which is the first sign of the Zodiac.

The third phase is the Full Moon. This moon stands for the mother pregnant with her child. This moon is associated with Cancer the crab because Cancer is the most maternal sign of the Zodiac. The full moon is probably the most famous moon not only in Astrology, but also in all of literature and even the movies. Regardless of what many think, there are events that occur during a full moon that suggest that there is something to this phase that is beyond rational explanation.

The fourth phase is the waning or Third Quarter Moon. This moon is linked to Virgo the virgin and the Earth Goddess, who is responsible for the harvest. This moon stands for the mature woman who must ultimately let her child go out into the world. This way the child can fulfill her destiny. Many people, during this phase find that they make changes in their lives or take some big chances in the area of independence. Many children actually do leave home during a Third Quarter Moon.

And there you have it, the 4 phases of the moon.

Tonight, take a look outside and see what kind of moon it is.

Just be on the lookout for any werewolves.

Some Astrological Terms

If you're not constantly subjected to the world of Astrology, you may hear some terms that are a little foreign to you. Well, for those of you are might be in need of a little explanation, here's some Astrological terms with some simple explanations. I hope they help some.

Ascendant - This is one that most people know under another term called a rising sign. This is simply the sign that was on the Eastern horizon of the zodiac chart at the time of a person's birth. The ascendant, or rising sign, characterizes a person's outward demeanor as they go through life. In other words, this is the personality that they show the world as they go about their business.

Aspect - This is the geometrical relationship between planets on a birth chart. The aspect can either be harmonious or challenging or anything in between. There are both major and minor aspects. Aspects are probably one of the most important parts of analyzing a person's birth chart.

Duality - This is a term that isn't really used very often. The signs of the zodiac are grouped under classifications. This is one of them. A sign's duality is either masculine or feminine. Six of the signs are masculine and six are feminine. The masculine signs are more outward or extroverted and the feminine signs are more inward or introverted.

Modern Planets - This is a term that is bound to confuse a lot of people, especially since we've all grown up in an age where we've known all the planets in our solar system. However, the term modern planets refers to the planets that were discovered after 1780, which are Uranus (1781), Neptune (1846) and Pluto (1930)

Polarity - Refers to signs that are at opposite poles to each other. For example, Aries and Libra are at opposite poles.

Rectification - This is another one of those terms that isn't used much. Rectification is correcting a birth chart of unknown or uncertain birth time. The process uses major events in the life of the subject or dominant personality traits that correspond to planetary aspects when making the corrections.

I think that's enough for now. In a few weeks I'll share some more Astrological terms with you. Eventually we'll get to all of them.

Prediction, Probablility Or Something Else?

I get this question asked of me a lot, not just for Astrology but for all forms of divination. "Can you really predict the future based on somebody's chart?" Well, yes and no. And that's what I tell them. And then, after I do, they give me a dirty look and say something like, "That's just a lot of double talk. Can you or can't you?" That's when I have to sit them down and have a heart to heart with them, though sometimes I wonder why I bother. Most people have already made up their minds about things and nothing you say is going to change their opinion. I learned that a long time ago.

For those of you who have been doing this for a while, please bare with me while I explain this to the rest of the folks. Hopefully, I can do it in a way that makes sense and also drives the point home clearly.

Astrology is the study of the planets, where the fall in the heavens during the course of the day and our whole lives, and what effect they have on us. And make no mistake about it, the planets do affect us greatly. It isn't just a coincidence that people tend to get crazy during a full moon. The moon, the closest of the celestial bodies to our earth, has a great impact on how we feel and what we do.

However, we are ultimately in control of how we deal with those feelings. No, we can't control how others act and unfortunately too many times the acts of others have a greater impact on our lives than anything we ultimately do on our own. Just ask James Brady the day he was shot when the attempt on Ronald Reagan's life was made. His life was never the same again, not so much because of anything he did, but because of the act of a madman.

Some of us have less control over how the planets affect us than others. Those people will most likely fall pray to the ups and downs of the planetary orbits. However, if an Astrologist can advise somebody on when it would be a bad time to enter a business partnership, based on the positions of the planets, he may be able to save that person a lot of heartache. Of course if the person doesn't take the advice, then there is a good chance that the results will be far from optimal.

But that doesn't mean that anything is certain. All Astrological "predictions" are just probabilities, based on the positions of the planets. We still have free will and other things can happen that are outside of our own control.

So to answer the question asked, no, we can't really predict the future because we all have free will, but we can see where there is a good chance that something is going to happen if an intervening force doesn't come into play.

In other words, forewarned is forearmed.

The Trine Aspect In Depth

Not too long ago, I went over the main aspects briefly. Today, I'm going to go over the Trine aspect in detail. This is one aspect that can really trip somebody up if they're not careful. I have personally fallen victim to the clear pathway of the Trine. The key is knowing when one is approaching and understanding how to deal with it.

For those who are not familiar with the Trine aspect, it is the most harmonious aspect between 2 planets in the zodiac. A Trine is when 2 planets are 120 degrees apart, plus or minus 9 degrees. In other words, planets can be anywhere from 111 to 129 degrees apart and still be considered Trine in their aspect.

A Trine aspect is the most harmonious. This is where you can pretty much walk out in the middle of the street and trip over good fortune. During this period of time, it seems that nothing can go wrong in the particular area governed by the 2 planets.

For example, let's say you have a Trine aspect between Venus and Mars. During this time, falling in love and starting a relationship can be as easy as bumping into somebody in the street and looking into their eyes. It is almost instantaneous. There is almost no effort in starting and developing the relationship. Certainly you don't have to worry about rejection. However, there is a drawback to this.

For those to whom love comes easy, sometimes they truly don't appreciate what they have. It came so easy that they take it for granted. Other times, they end up getting involved with somebody who turns out to be all wrong for them. Had they had a little more difficult time of it, they might have seen some signs that would have indicated that this person might be the wrong choice.

Sometimes the Trine aspect blinds us to any potential for harm. You ever hear of the saying, "It was too good to be true?" Many times, these too good to be true events are the result of a Trine aspect that has gone terribly wrong because of our own laziness or shortsightedness. A Trine aspect means something will be easy for us, not necessarily good for us.

So it is important to keep that in mind when we are in the middle of a Trine aspect between 2 planets.

It may mean the difference between a pleasant experience and a nightmare.

Love And The Elements Part 1

Ah yes, love sweet love. That 4 letter word has been responsible for more movies, books, poems and what have you than just about any other word in the English, or any other language for that matter. Yes, love is what makes the world go round. And in Astrology, love is a real hot topic. Everybody wants to know who their most compatible match is. Well, this post is going to cover some basic items in regard to matching up the signs.

Even though there are 12 signs, there are really only 4 types of signs - fire, earth, air and water. Each sign is one of these 4 types. Well, it turns out that by combining these types in the 10 ways that they can be combined, you come up with some interesting combinations.

In this part, I'm going to focus on just one of these combinations. In future installments, I'll cover other combinations.

We start with Earth and Water.

What happens when you mix these two? Well, you get mud, basically. Some might be kind and say damp soil. but usually, it's mud.

Some would say that you get stuck in the mud and a relationship of this nature can be very boring. Well, there is another side to it. When you combine these two elements, you have the potential for real growth, just like when you're farming and water your soil. The truth is, of all the combinations, Earth and Water have the greatest potential for long term growth. They may not be the hottest relationships under the sun, but they are solid.

It just so happens that my wife is a Taurus, which is an Earth sign and I am a Scorpio, which is a Water sign. We've been married 23 years as of this posting. Our anniversary is August 25. So maybe there's something to all this. We may not have the hottest relationship in the world, but we are best of friends and love each other very much. We have a wonderful daughter, now 18, and we couldn't be happier.

In a future installment, I'll cover another combination.

Do You Read Your Daily Horoscope?

It might sound like a strange question, especially if you do your own charts and your own daily horoscopes. But be honest. When you open up the front door and get the morning paper, don't you turn to the family section and check out your daily horoscope? I know I do.

What do you look for?

Do you look to see if the person who did the daily for your sign got it right? Does it agree with what you came up with? If it does, does it make your own convictions about your own chart that much greater? If it doesn't agree with yours, do you dismiss it?

Lots of questions, I know. Personally, I look at the daily horoscope as a learning tool. Yes, there is no reason that I can't learn from others, especially those who have been at this a lot longer than I have. After all, we can always improve our skills.

If I see a horoscope that doesn't agree with mine, I look to see where we are different. I then examine the differences and see where I may have erred. At the very least, I want to see why we are different. Everybody goes through a different process and no two astrologers are going to come up with the same daily chart.

Point is, I try to keep an open mind when reading my horoscope, realizing that I may actually learn something from it

He is the founding director of the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness graduate studies program at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and also teaches on the faculty of Pacifica Graduate Institute. Art Bell was joined by Richard Tarnas, author of Cosmos and Psyche and The Passion of the Western Mind, for a discussion on consciousness, the history of modern thought, and the validity of astrology and its role in world affairs. While the planets do not rule us, Tarnas explained, there is a correspondence between planetary alignments and the human experience. He likened this relationship to a clock, which itself does not cause a specific time to occur, but rather shows what time it is. Tarnas said a human being may display archetypal personality traits based on where planets were when he/she was born, however, that person can also play a more or less conscious role in how those traits are expressed. For Tarnas, this non-deterministic astrological viewpoint shows the universe is not void of meaning -- it is instead meaningfully focused on the individual and on Earth. Tarnas also talked about John Mack, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Harvard Medical School professor who researched alien abduction phenomenon; Nancy Reagan's reliance on astrology and its influence on public policy; and Art Bell's astrological birth chart, which described him as a restless, unorthodox innovator. Richard Tarnas is a Harvard-educated historian and professor of philosophy and psychology, and the author of The Passion of the Western Mind. Astrology & Diceology

A Marriage Made In The Stars

When I first developed Diceology, I never expected to ever combine it with any of the other forms of divination. But one day, it just all came together.

Astrology was the biggest challenge though.

But why?

Astrology, unlike Tarot Cards, Cartouche and even Numerology, has a complexity that goes far beyond the actual meaning of all the signs.

I remember back in the days when I first learned to do an Astrological chart, long before there was software to do this for you. I remember saying to my friend Shirley, "Why would anybody in their right mind want to do all this work?" You have to admit, it is a handful.

I remember her explaining the joy of doing a chart to me...the satisfaction seeing it all come together. After a while, I started to see it too. I admit, I never was the best at making these charts but I was good enough.

Today, as we have all this software that can make a chart in a matter of seconds, I almost long for the good old days. Yes, they were fun.

Point is, as complex as Astrology is, compared to the other forms of divination, the challenge of combining it with Diceology was even greater. So you can imagine my joy when I was able to do it and actually do an Astrological/Diceology reading that was quite accurate.

If you want to see how they're done, pick up my 6 book series. The third book in the series is all about combining Astrology with Diceology. I am sure you will find it quite fascinating.

Here's the URL where you can check it out.

Read Any Good Books Lately?

Have you...read any good Astrology books lately?

I've actually read quite a few of them in my life and you know what I have found interesting about all of them, especially on an instructional level?

They all pretty much tell me the same thing. However, there is a difference that is hard to explain but I will try my best to do it.

Even though the basic information is the same from one book to another, the style of each author and the depth in which they go into the subject is unique.

Some authors are very basic and give it to you in straight forward easy to understand language. These authors are obviously trying to reach the "beginner" crowd. We need more of those because let's face it, Astrology can get REALLY complicated.

And then there are the authors who speak like Rhodes scholars and half the time you have almost no clue what they're talking about. Okay, I admit it...I'm not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, but I am intelligent enough to understand basic instruction. But some of these books are written for those with an IQ of about 200.

Makes me wonder who THEIR target market is because it certainly isn't me. These books are now collecting dust in my collection.

When I wrote my Diceology book, even though I will admit that it can be a complext subject, I tried to make it as simple to understand as I could. Hopefully, I succeeded.

Maybe you'll let me know.

You can do that by picking up a copy here:

Did I write for the beginner, or am I out in the stars somewhere? I'm particularly curious as to what you think about the Diceology Astrology volume.

Anyway, that's all I wanted to share with you today. If you like, you can sign in to my guest book and let me know what your favorite Astrology books are.

Steven Wagenheim
