Are you a Stationery Addict?

So many people love stationery. For some it is a fascination with paper. For others it can be a love of pens, diaries or desk tools like staplers and dispensers.

My name is Atticus Parker and my favorite stationery items are the pencil case and the mechanical pencil.

I like stationery so much I have my own stationery blog - The Leaky Pen.

I have also created a lens for The Leaky Pen here. Please visit either webpage sometime and enjoy my stationery musings.

This lens will showcase why I like the Pencil Case so much and point out the many important features you should consider when buying one. There are also some web resources for you to consult and some videos.

I hope you come to appreciate Pencil Cases as much as I do.

Pencil Cases - The Forgotten Stationery Item

The world of stationery collecting has many glamour items - the fountain pen, the mechanical pencil, the journal. Often forgotten is the humble pencil case.

Ignored for too long it is time for the pencil case to be afforded its rightful place as the centrepiece of every stationery collection.

We use our pencil cases every day. It houses and protects our most expensive stationery items. The first item people see when we look for our pen is our pencil case.

Our pencil case could easily be that statement so many try to make with their fancy pants pen they bought in Geneva last summer.

Let's celebrate the Pencil Case.

Pencil Cases - An Anatomy

What exactly is a Pencil Case

A pencil case is a storage device for stationery items like pens, pencils, erasers and more. A key difference between a pencil case and a stationery cupboard is that the pencil case is portable. It is designed to protect your items on the move whether it is in your hand, a briefcase or a backpack.

Pencil cases can be made from a variety of materials. Some pencil cases have a hard and rigid shell encasing the pens inside while others use a softer material.

Why are Pencil Cases so
Fantastic?

Pencil Cases Rock Because ...

1. they can be fashion items.

2. they can store more than just pens and pencils.

3. they can be strictly utilitarian.

4. they can be created from anything (cigar box, tool box etc).

5. they can have nifty little hiding spots in them.

6. they could hold your entire collection of pens etc.

7. they can be cheap.

8.

The Different Types of
Pencil Cases

Pouch Style

The pouch style pencil case is the most common style of case. It can hold the most of all the styles.

Be warned though, you will have to forage for your favourite pen and don't expect your stationery to stay in pristine condition with everything 'rubbing' up against each other.

Box Style

The box style pencil case is seriously 'Old School'. Its style harks back to a bygone era where function was prized equally with classic styling.

The box style pencil case is really meant to stay on a desk or be in a drawer. It will last well in a rucksack but its hard edges may hinder packing or prove too brittle in a fall.

Slider Box Pencil Case - My father gave this to me when I was young. He made it when he was at school.

Fold/Wrap

Elegant and stylish are the words that come to mind with fold or wrap style pencil cases. You won't fit as many items into a case like this but you will certainly look the stationery connoisseur.

Anyone with a tartan patterned department store bought pouch pencil case will hang their head in shame when you bring this case out. your fold/wrap pencil case will preserve each writing utensil and prevent scratches and bumps from other items.

Tin

Simple and hardy this is the boy scout's choice in pencil cases. Often an old math set tin case two of these can be taped together to create a double story pencil case worth bragging to your mates about.

The 'well to do' may prefer to buy a new tin case with art work adorning its outer shell but on the inside we know all tin cases are the same.

The Tin pencil case is strong, durable and the student's choice. Those students with character anyway ;)
