X-men comic book hero's

The x men are the Marvel comics squad of super heroes. These heros derive their powers from genetic mutation. Several of the x-men are well known in their own right. These include Wolverine , Cyclops and Storm.

The x-men tales have been available in comic format from Marvel comic books since 1963. The comics continue to be popular and widely available. There have been 4 x-men movies to date. X-men, X-men2, X-men: The final Stand, X-men : Origins. In this lens, I will be reviewing the x-men material that i am familiar with.

X-men: the concept

The x-men team lead by Professor Xavier, have been one of the most popular super hero's comic series for a long time. The superb realisation of this series on film has magnified its popularity. Spectacular performances from Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman have helped cement this series positon as one of the top Speculative fiction series around today.

In the movies, in the x-mens version of reality, mankind is starting to experience severe mutation of the genetic code of human beings. This leads to people been born with or developing extraordinary powers. Dr Charles Xavier , himself a mutant, starts an institution to guide and teach any mutants willing to join the institute. Xavier recruits an elite force of powerful mutants to do battle for good for all humanity, this force is known as the x-men.

X-men: Wolverine

This is the most charismatic of the x-men. Hugh Jackmans portrayal of Wolverine is simply superb. Wolverine per the movie and comic books has very long compound bone claws coming out of the backs of his hands. The blades burst through the flesh on his hands everytime he extends them. He has a Adamantium endoskeleton grafted onto him human bony skeleton.

All these are only feasable because of his mutation which enables his body to regenerate very quickly and apparently, to tolerate the metals in his body without rejecting them. Hugh Jackmans Wolverine is quick tempered and barely disciplined, all in the best Hollywood tradition of rebellious independent hero's who bend the rules and regularly get away with it.

X-men : Storm

For me , always the prettiest Super heroine of the lot. In the movies, Halle Berry is as excellent as ever as Ororo Monroe. Her Powers revolve around control of weather and air vortices. Thus she can get the wind to carry her places, she can whip up an instant thunderstorm and direct the path of lightning, thereby using it as a weapon.

X-Men: The first movie

In this movie , we're introduced to Wolverine, Professor Xavier, Storm, Cyclops, Magneto and the Major characters in this series. The movie does focus on the attempt of a number of politicians to oppress the mutant minority. Plus we do have the dastardly Magneto attempting to turn every one into a mutant.

The plotting of the movie greatly emphasises the role of Logan aka Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman. Howevr the whole cast is remarkably strong including as it does Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Halle berry as Ororo Munro Storm, Ian McKellen as Magneto. I found the performances convincing, the Special effects are effective but never dominate the movie. All the x-men movies are very much about the characters involved. That is a good thing.

X-men 2 : Second movie

This movie sees the x-men assaulted by standard human beings. There is attempt to Kill all mutants using a remarkable device, there is Magneto contributing his own bit trying to kill all standard Human beings. In the end nobody comes out of the movie clean. Even Xavier ends the movie looking very threatening indeed. like all the X-men movies, the reality of discrimination, the misuse of great power is explored like few other movies would attempt.

The movie has few answers for the questions it posses. There is no doubt that the protagonist have muddled their way through extremely severe situations. The end is satisfyingly indecisive. The x-men win, but Magneto is on the loose. The X-men have won, but receive scant recognition and then resort to unpleasant tactics to hold on to what they have.

X-men: The final Stand

In this movie, we focus squarely on the consequences of the mutations and how standard humans and mutated humans react to each other. Magneto's earlier attempts at a massive attack on standard Human beings have all failed. All thanks to the x-men. However, a remarkably powerful mutant , whose power was only hinted at in the previous movies now comes to the fore front. Suddenly magneto has the weapon to annhilate humanity or excercise dominion. Well, things do not work out that way.

There are some remarkable battle scenes in this movie. Its considerably more intense than the previous 2 movies. However, in this movie, the losses are particularly severe for all concerned. The name is appropriate, Xmen:The final stand.
