What is Dahn Yoga ?

Unlike most forms of yoga, Dahn yoga did not develop in India but in South Korea and is modern. Known in Korea as Dahnak or Dahn Hak, the first Dahn yoga center was opened in Seoul in the 1980s by the originator of Dahn yoga, Il-chi Lee, although it is reported to be based on a much older tradition. It soon spread to the USA.

Like Hatha yoga, which is much better known in the west, Dahn yoga unites physical postures and breathing exercises and focuses on aligning the body and mind in order to expand the mind and allow better circulation of energy within the body. It also proposes some physical benefits, lowering stress levels, improving general health and fitness and promoting both longer life and improved vitality and quality of life.

Dahn yoga also claims to help the body learn to heal itself naturally, by improving the circulation of life energy and its connection with the mind and consciousness. This is done physically by exercises which are said to remove blockages in its path.

Spiritual healing is also promoted through meditation along with improved relaxation. Mental health and physical tensions are released through the yoga practice, and like other forms of yoga it is a holistic practice whose benefits reverberate into daily life.

Dahn Hak philosophy includes certain principles of the action and movement of life energy (ki, also spelled chi or qi) that students are taught during the classes. There tends to be more teaching of the ideas behind the practice than you would find in a Hatha yoga class in the West. T

his, together with the high prices that are often charged in comparison with other yoga classes, has resulted in some accusations of cult status. However, there does not seem to be any evidence of the human rights issues that are associated with dangerous cults.

Nobody will stop you from leaving a Dahn yoga class, and making large profits is not by itself evidence of a cult, or many businesses would fall into that definition! These accusations may simply be caused by differences between north east Asian culture and Western culture which lead many mainstream Korean and Japanese martial arts and religious groups to be viewed as cults by some Americans.

A typical Dahn yoga class will begin with meridian stretching exercises to stimulate the ki to pass freely through all the meridians of the body. These are followed by a series of postures and often a period of meditation or breathing exercises that focuses on releasing stagnant ki and storing fresh ki in the body's center, the dan jeong or 2nd chakra, located in the abdomen just below the navel. Some Dahn classes teach a non-combative form of martial art called Dahn Mu Do that is more like tai chi than yoga.

As with other forms of yoga, students report many health benefits, including resolution of many problems that are frequently stress-related such as back pain, shoulder and neck tension, sleeping problems, migraine and digestive disorders, from their practice of Dahn yoga.

Yoga Improves Your Circulation

One of the many benefits of yoga is the fact that it helps to improve your circulation and due to that there are many other aspects of your body health that will improve.

With improved circulation it can help to ward off illness and also help in the recovery of sickness and the repair of injury.

The state of your circulation system has a very important role to play in your overall state of health as it affects all areas of the body so anything that you can do to improve your circulation will have beneficial results on all areas of your body.

The exercises performed in yoga are particularly good at improving your circulation and most people will find that their levels of energy will increase quite considerably if they do yoga on a regular basis.

Yoga also helps to release toxins that are in your system and this is another process that will be helped by improved circulation.

When these toxins are released and eliminated from your system they can affect so many other areas of your health from your ability to lose weight to improvements in your lung function and heart function.

It can even help to lower your cholesterol.

You can spend a considerable amount of money buying supplements and other vitamins, minerals and herbal products to assist with the circulation and an hour or so of yoga a couple of times a week will give you a lot more benefit than many of these and other expensive health store products combined.

It is certainly well worth considering even if you do have excess money to spend on such supplements as this is a natural way to improve your health and it is a long-term answer to ensure that your health will remain better for many years to come.

Osteoporosis and Yoga

Osteoporosis is a major problem that many people have to live with as they age and it is particularly more of a problem with elderly women.

Yoga can help many of these people to reduce the effects of osteoporosis on two different fronts.

Firstly yoga is one of the best methods of helping people to get a better posture and in doing so it also assists in helping to strengthen all the supporting muscles and tissues that help you to retain that posture.

By keeping your body in alignment there is considerably less strain on your joints, bones, tendons and ligaments.

The other way that yoga helps reduce the incidence of osteoporosis in elderly people is by improving and assisting in all the other functions of the body thereby lifting the overall health of the person to a higher level.

The improvements in the circulatory system and digestive system ensure that the maximum benefits are retained from the food that is consumed and this helps to boost nutrition.

Osteoporosis is made worse by a lack in suitable nutrition of essential elements and anything that can be done to improve this and 'feed' the body it's necessary requirements will help to ward off osteoporosis.

Yoga is one such method of assistance and the fact that it can have such a big impact on digestion and elimination, apart from the other factors mentioned previously, shows why yoga is a wise choice for quality of life as we age and particularly those people who are more susceptible to getting osteoporosis.

As with any other part of the body from the muscles to the skin, the bones can be strengthened from regular quality exercise and there is no for of exercise better than yoga to give the body an all over fitness boost at any age.

Yoga and Health - An Alternative Form of Exercise

powered by Youtube

Describing Some Hatha Yoga Poses:

If you are interested in learning about yoga then you will want to know some basic hatha yoga poses.

Hatha yoga (or active yoga) is a holistic form of exercise that benefits both the body and mind, often in surprising ways.

Most of the different forms of yoga that you will see advertised are simply different styles of hatha yoga, some more physically demanding than others. A

ll of them involve yoga postures or asanas which are traditional methods of stretching the body to increase flexibility. Many yoga postures are common to all forms of yoga.

Sukhasana - Seated Pose

Sukhasana is one of the most basic and easy yoga poses. It is the position from which most yoga classes start. It helps you to center your mind and relax at the beginning of your practice, focusing on awareness of your body and your breathing. It is a good posture for meditation, and it helps to strengthen the back muscles and open the hips.

For this posture you sit cross-legged and focus on your breathing. Ideally you would be in the lotus position with each foot turned up and resting on the opposite thigh, but for many Westerners this is not possible. You may be able to sit comfortably with one foot up and the other on the ground, or both feet and both knees on the ground.

Whatever you do, try to have the legs arranged so that the feet are not under the thighs, and the knees can descend as low as possible. The knees should not be higher than the hips: if they are, you should sit on a block or cushion.

Keep the spine straight from the level of the navel and press the sit bones down into the floor. Hands are on the knees, facing upward, with the fingers together and curled so that the thumb touches the first finger.

In order to complete this position you need to sit cross-legged with your hands on your knees, and focus on your breath. Make sure that you keep your spine straight and push the sit bones down into the floor.

Allow the knees to gently lower, and remember that if the knees rise above your hips, you need to sit on a cushion or block in order to fix this.

Cat and Dog

This is a movement between two postures which you can use as a stretching exercise. It increases flexibility of the spine and can be helpful for mild back and neck stiffness.

Begin on your hands and knees, with your legs about hip width apart and the heel of your hands just below your shoulders. Inhaling, tilt the tailbone and pelvis upward, letting the middle of the spine come down so that the spine forms a U shape.

Lift the head and look up as far as you comfortably can. Do not over-stretch. This is the dog pose.

Then, exhaling, slowly and smoothly move into the cat position by lowering the head and raising the mid-section of the spine to reverse the bend. You are now curving in the opposite direction, looking between your legs.

As you inhale, curl back the other way to the dog position. In both cases the movement lasts the whole length of the breath and is very steady and slow. Hold each pose for a couple of seconds only, between breaths.

If you practice these very basic hatha yoga poses for a few minutes every day, you should soon notice their benefit.

The Connection Between Yoga and Meditation

Meditation requires the person to sit in one position for a length of time. As this times can range from as little as ten minutes or so up to and over a couple of hours it is essential that the person mediating remains as comfortable as possible during that time.

Yoga exercises and the stretching and relaxation of the muscles help to make these extended periods of sitting possible.

Yoga also teaches techniques that assist in calming the mind and the body and this makes it easier to become prepared for meditation. Being in a more relaxed state makes meditation possible for those people who have very active lives whereby they have a lot on their mind.

A lot of people combine both yoga and meditation in their life to maximize the benefits that they gain by both and the additional benefits that can only be achieved from a combination of the two.

Many religions and primarily those in India have yoga and meditation as one of their key elements as they understand how the techniques used in both yoga and meditation can bring about a balance in society and the reduction in stress and anxiety results in a more harmonious group of people.

By assisting people in calming and controlling their emotions it also helps with their health and happiness. The ability to meditate also allows people to reach a higher state of awareness and acceptance of themselves and others.

By combining the benefits of both yoga and meditation it is possible to make significant changes in your life and remove bad habits and negative emotions that can destroy the opportunity to get the most out of life.

For many people meditation is something that they wouldn't consider before having experienced the positive effects that yoga can bring about in their life.

Universal Trends

It seems like there's never a week that passes when there is not another exercise program being offered that will deliver all the benefits that so many people are searching for. In addition to this, most of these exercise programs focus on the fact that they are simple and inexpensive to apply and the results are fast and easy to achieve.

More often than not they involve the purchase of some recently invented piece of exercise equipment that is supposed to do everything for the new owner.

Unfortunately they usually under deliver and the buyer is left wondering why they wasted their time and money on something that did little for their life.

What many people don't seem to understand is the easiest way to make improvements to their body, with the added benefit of improvements to their mind at the same time is through the use of yoga.

That situation is changing however as people the world over begin to understand the importance of including yoga or many aspects of yoga into their lifestyle.

People follow trends and fortunately in this case yoga has become very trendy recently. It has always had a huge following the world over however, when anything becomes trendy there is a big surge of publicity and people tend to get 'on the bandwagon'

What has happened with yoga is people have been adopting this into their life and the benefits they are seeing are often rapid and considerable. This positive effect that people are seeing encourages them to continue with the exercises and so the benefits continue leading people to adopt yoga as an important part of their lifestyle.

When their friends and families see the changes in them it leads more people to try yoga and this is the reason why the trend for more and more people to use yoga continues to grow universally.

Here are some of the yoga poses that are commonly used:

There are various different yoga poses and they all focus on appropriate areas of body's health strength and flexibility.

The poses that are considered the most important are those that are performed while standing.

Many people find these quite difficult when they start out with their yoga training and particularly those in poor health or elderly who don't have the strength to maintain good form initially.

These poses are extremely important because they help to build that strength. They also help to bring about alignment in the body which improves your posture and reduces other problems such as back pain that is particularly common with elderly people or those who have not done any form of exercise for some time.

The standing poses also help to build stability which is very important for the elderly who are susceptible to falls and the ongoing health problems that these can bring about.

By adding strength to your legs when performing the standing poses the biggest muscles in the body are working towards helping to maintain your balance.

Flexibility and the stretching of the hamstrings will also reduce the incidence of lower back pain.

The back is also strengthened by the various different seated poses particularly in the lower back and the flexibility of the hips.

Seated poses are also excellent for elderly or sick people who are just starting out with yoga and need additional support until they are able to move on to the standing poses.

They also allow for an excellent position to relax and concentrate on the breathing.

From the seated position people still have the ability to stretch the hamstrings and relieve tension throughout the body and particularly in those areas at the back of the neck, upper shoulders and spine.

This is one area that elderly people can find a buildup of tension as they tend to sit around much of the time without doing any form of exercise. Stretching from seated poses helps to eliminate that tension.
