This page is about the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Sixth Amendment rights are frequently referred to as the "trial rights" guaranteed by the Constitution.

The full text of the Sixth Amendment reads as follows:

"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district where in the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense."

To the left is a picture of James Madison, who presented the Bill of Rights for ratification to Congress in 1789. James Madison was born on March 16, 1751 and died on June 28, 1836. He later became the 4th President of the United States from 1809 through 1817. He wrote over one third of the Federalist Papers, still widely regarded as the most influential commentary on the United States Constitution ever written.
