About The Whispering Crane Institute

The Whispering Crane Institute was originally formed to act as the umbrella organization for the Philosophy of Design Symposium, and other seminars and workshops given by Rick Anderson and  Richard L. Dube'. In the year 2000 WCI became a sole proprietorship owned by Rick Anderson.

Today the WCI provides design and consultation services for Landscape
Contractors, acts as a "Green Industry" think tank, and provides training for
others in the form of workshops, seminars, and individual consulting. The WCI also provides written material, opinions, case-studies and how-to articles for industry trade magazines.

Stone Workshops

In August and October. 3-day events that will be hands-on, and everybody gets to work with stone. No watching.

More to follow!

The WCI Blog

Where it gets posted 1st on the WCI

My hope is to use this site to spread some info about the art and practice of Landscape Design. It is a very misunderstood profession; I do not cut grass like the next door neighbor's cousin who carries 3 mowers and a blower in the back of his truck. I will also pass along comments on industry happenings, events, etc., and any maybe a few other adventures going on in my world-after all this is "my" blog.

A Landscape Rendering

Conceptual drawing for a student gathering area at a local college

A black and white drawing filled in with paint.net just to show something a little different. My color renderings are too large to load.

The Ten Things I am doing, will do, or have done.

Is there a way I can help your Landscape Business

I am available to work just about anywhere-given enough notice. We can work out daily, weekly, or longer rates.

Rates for speaking engagement differ based on the type of business/organization that is hiring. I also ask for travel and lodging, etc., in expenses.
  1. I am a Landscape Designer
  2. I do consulting on Landscape Design and Construction
  3. I can work with your staff, or individual designer to improve their skills.
  4. I do workshops on several topics. Workshops are where we get the audience involved. Not listening, but actually working.
  5. Do you need someone to do Seminars or Lectures to several people, or several hundred people? Talks on Design, Construction, Graphics, Nature, Stone, Water.
  6. How about boulder work? Setting the big ones, or teaching your crew(s) the art of stone placement.
  7. Water features . . . what about building naturalistic water features? I can teach you or your people how to put them in.
  8. I build sculptural elements in the landscape using stone for stone placement, and the earth, to create interest in the terrain.
  9. I've taught at a Technical School developing a certificate program in Horticulture. I am working with a local University to develop a program for landscape graphics and hand rendering.
  10. Writing for several Trade Publications and magazines

Series of small little drops

This series of small falls starts a 15 foot drop into a large pond. Ohio field stone is the stone of choice for a project like this.

These will let you find it all about the WCI

Blog, Static web-site, Images stored, pretty much says it all. Other Squidoo sites.
The Blog
Constant updates, case-studies, and other industry happenings.
The static web-site
The traditional (sort-of) stuff, that you would see in other pages of this type. Except my work is a little different.

Projects and graphics
Images on Fotki
Images separated by jobs, and the graphics that go with the work. Lots of graphics, a lot. Plus before and afters when I was able to do so.

The Backyard

Seating in the snow

A series *if "Fred Flintstone" was a designer* seats around a fire pit. The stone is sandstone and there are old Ohio fieldston re-used and recycled.

This stone is highly coveted and that means it expensive.
