Are The Indiana Jones Movies The Greatest Adventures in Movie History?

Indiana Jones is one of the best known and loved movie characters ever to be created. The studious academic Dr Henry Jones Jr becomes transformed into the ultimate adventure hero Indiana Jones.

George Lucas created the Indiana Jones character in homage to the great serial movies of the 1930's. Indy has not just appeared in movies but has also been featured in novels, comics and video games. Indiana Jones even has his own show and thrill rides in the Disney theme parks.

So what is the ultimate attraction of the Indiana Jones character? And does the new movie Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull live up to expectations?

Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark

Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark was the first movie in the Indiana Jones adventures story. George Lucas and Steven Speilberg created one of the most successful and enjoyable movie stories of our time.

Dr Henry Jones Jr is a successful academic archeologist who has a very practical approach to searching for the relics of the past. This first adventure sees him searching for the Ark of the Covenant. Indiana Jones is not alone in his search. The Nazis also want the ultimate prize of the Ark.

When released on June 12, 1981, the $20 million (USD) film was a huge success, easily the highest grossing film of 1981, earning $384 million worldwide, and, at the time, one of the highest-grossing movies ever made.

In 1982 it was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Raiders won four (Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration).

The Adventures of Indiana Jones collection includes Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

What I always look forward to in a boxed set collection like this is the extra features and this one doesn't disappoint. Each Indiana Jones movie disc has a new introduction by George Lucas and Steven Speilberg. The story boards and photos are a nice feature too.

There are a number of other interesting features on this new set including Travels With Indy, The Creepy Crawlies and Indy's Women.

Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom

Although the film followed Raiders of the Lost Ark it was set a year before it, in 1935.

The movie got very mixed reviews as a result of it's dark themes of child slavery and cult rituals. Both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas had both gone through marriage breakups and divorce prior to the movie and admit that the dark tone was influenced by their personal circumstances.

Temple of Doom was made on a budget of $28 million - but made almost $180 million when it was released in 1984.

Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade

The Last Crusade is my own personal favorite Indiana Jones adventure movie. Made in 1989 it stars Sean Connery as Indiana's father Dr Henry Jones Snr. Jones Snr has made it his life time mission to search for the Holy Grail.

When his father is abducted Indiana Jones must take over the quest for the Holy Grail to find his father and prevent the sacred prize from falling into the hands of the Nazis.

The dramatic final scenes were shot in the ancient city of Petra. Other locations included Venice, Colorado and England.

2000 rats were specially bred for the catacombs sequence to keep out disease. These are the only scenes of the Last Crusade movie that I have never been able to watch - I have a long standing rat phobia!

Filming began on May 16, 1988, with a budget of $36 million.

The Last Crusade is estimated to have grossed over $197 million in North America and $474 million worldwide.

For me one of the best parts of the movie is the opening sequence with River Phoenix as the young Indiana Jones. This sequence explains so many things about the Indiana Jones character. His relationship with his father, his fear of snakes, the whip and the famous Indiana Jone fedora hat.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing and also it received nominations for Original Score and Sound. Sean Connery received a Golden Globe nomination.

When you go to the movies to see a sequel there is often that feat that it simply isn't going to live up to expectation. There was certainly a long wait for this one. 19 years of a wait.

Time has moved on for Indiana Jones and this movie is set in 1957. The movie opens with a dramatic sequence of his first encounter with villain Irana Spalko - head of a elite Soviet agent force searching for the Crystal Skull.

The Crystal Skull is believed to have mystical powers which the Soviets want to possess.

The movie sees the return of Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood and the debut of Shia Le Boeuf as Mutt Williams.

A great movie in the tradition of the Indiana Jones adventures. Let us just hope there is an Indiana Jones 5...........
