In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly.

- Charge Time: Fully charges in approximately 4 hours and supports charging from your computer via the included USB 2.0 cable.

- Connectivity: EVDO modem with fallback to 1xRTT; utilizes Amazon Whispernet to provide U.S wireless coverage via Sprint's 3G high-speed data network. Check our wireless coverage map for availability. This expanded coverage is only available for Kindle 2. See Wireless Terms and Conditions.

The amazon kindle has a 6in black and white E ink screen which can be viewed in direct sunlight. The display is low power so you should get 30 hours' reading from one charge. It is paperback sized and does not bleep or run hot like a laptop.

The Kindle currently uses the EvDo mobile data network (similar to 3G but slower). Amazon opted for it rather than Wi-i to make sure that Kindle users can buy books wherever they are.

There is no subscription charge. Grabbing a book costs $10 and takes about 60 seconds.

The Kindle can store around 200 books on its 256MB internal memory and you can add more with SD cards.

It comes with a basic web browser and will also handle MP3 files.

Ebooks bought from Amazon use AZW DRM to make sure you can't share them with other people, which is understandable. But Kindle will accept unprotected Mobipocket format ebooks and txt, html, JPEG, GIF and Word files. It will also let you copy text from the web to be read later. Files can be transferred onto the device via USB, emailed directly to it via a dedicated email address or converted free and sent to your home computer.
