One Mom's Opinion

I'm a mom of two who's got a few opinions on just what makes a good diaper. I thought my thoughts would be helpful to other parents, so I've made a lens about my diapering experiences and I've cast my vote for what I think is the best diaper of them all.

Read on to find out where you should be spending your money and where you could be wasting it...

Voted "Most Likely to Leak"

Huggies Brand Diapers

In my area, Huggies diapers are the pricey-est diaper of them all. And they are also the diaper I dislike the most. Why? Because I've had them leak on me one too many times!

When we had our first baby, we were on a tight budget. I remember feeling like a bad mom because we could only afford the cheapest of the cheap in diapers. Huggies sent me a free Supreme diaper in the mail. I gleefully put it on my daughter, thinking how nice it would be to have these all the time. Then that morning--while out in public--my precious Huggies diaper leaked poo all over MY outfit. Lovely.

We were also given a free package of Huggies by some kind-hearted friends but the leakage rate on these diapers was so high, I doubt I will ever give these a second try. Besides, they're too expensive!

Read on for a better buy. For me, everything is better than Huggies! (Except for their wipes--they rock in the wipes department!)

Best High-End Diaper

Pampers Brand Diapers

Pampers can be a bit pricey. But I think at times they are worth every penny! Pampers makes a special newborn diaper (called "Swaddlers") that I love to use on my babies for the first month or so. They have a "magical" mesh netting inside them that helps to trap yucky newborn poo and keep it from leaking. Their "Cruisers" diapers also have this magical netting. I like to have a few on hand in case my baby comes down with a bit of diarrhea. They work wonders!

But that said, I don't think they are worth the cost to use them everyday. I think there are better diapers for that! Especially Pamper's "Baby Dry" line--they are the same as Luvs, so why pay more? Save your money, unless you have a newborn or a sick baby on your hands.

Best Diaper Overall

Luvs Brand Diapers

Luvs were my favorite diaper to use with my daughter. I haven't bought them for my son for two reasons: 1) I think the purple they use is a little less "gender-neutral" then they think it is (I think it looks girly!) and 2) I found a good diaper for us at Sam's Club (read more below).

That said, I think that Luvs is the best diaper for your money. They are always a few dollars less than Huggies and Pampers! They are also designed very well and I can't recall any horrific leakage incidents to share with you. In fact, I might go as far as to say that I think that Luvs are the most absorbent diaper (for wetness) that I've tried! They are very, very good!

Best Diaper From a Warehouse

Member's Mark from Sam's Club

A friend of mine convinced me to get a Sam's Club membership this year. I decided to try out their Member's Mark diaper, thinking that it would be similar to Wal-Mart's Parent's Choice but I was pleasantly surprised! It was made to resemble Luvs (without the obnoxious purple color) and it's now become my diaper of choice. And as a busy mom, I also look forward to having to buy a huge box at one time (so that I'm not always needing to run out to the store for more diapers!).

If you already have a Sam's Club membership, or you've been thinking about getting one, try these diapers! Otherwise, I'd say stick with Luvs and save the $40 you'd spend on a year of membership for more diapers.

Winner of the "Better Than Huggies!" Award

Wal-Mart's Parents Choice

I've heard many people complain about Wal-Mart diapers. I don't think that they're bad--they are better than Huggies in my opinion! I used them for my son for months before I discovered (and fell in love with) Member's Mark.

These diapers do have a tendency to leak fluid once your baby progresses into the "drinking from a sippy cup" stage. Their little bodies start processing more fluid and if you forget to watch the clock, you might find you've got a wet bottom on your hands. And this type of diaper, just like Huggies, is not made to catch that runny, messy newborn poo. And when it runs, guess where it goes?! On you, on your baby... everywhere!

But aside from those stages, I've never had a problem with Parent's Choice. And they are the cheapest of the cheap! I'd recommend using them from two to ten months. Save your dollars for something other than diapers! Like a date night...

Winner of the "Why Bother?" Award

White Cloud

I haven't used White Cloud's diapers in a few years. That's because my impression of them was that they were no different from Parent's Choice, but they cost at least a dollar more... for what?

It could be they've changed significantly. If I ever decide to test them out again, I'll come back and update my two cents here. But for now, I highly recommend you go with something else. Save a dollar or save an accident--either way, you save by going with another brand of diaper.

Generic diapers are the best. Save yourself a fortune!

marys mom says:

I am going to try the generic diapers. this will be my first kid. And not knowing how to manage with a kid i would like to save money so i could get her more things that she needs. Your advice i take seriously. I wish i read this article before i bought a whole bunch of huggies and also pampers

Lisa says:

I love parents choice the best.

amber says:

parents choice diapers are wonderful..u can get a box and it will last almost 2 weeks

Katie says:

White cloud or parents choice-no leaks

Janie says:

Parent's Choice diapers are Great Diapers For your money... yes the name brand ones work great but very pricey!!!

It is worth every penny to buy a name-brand diaper.

HisFireKids says:

Huggies Surpreme are best to us....

Kachelle says:

my husband and I have always used Pampers on our son, we love them and though there a little more than store brand diapers they are well worth the price. I personally think Pampers are the best diaper.

Happy Mom says:

Our son started off in Pampers Swaddlers, and then I got a box of Huggies at Sam's because you got 10 more diapers for the same price at Pampers. BIG mistake! They were not soft and leaked all the time. I went back to Pampers (he's in the Cruisers now) and they are great! Very soft and we've never had a leak! While on vacation, however, we did get a pack of Luv's because that's all they had at the store, and they were great, too. Softness-wise they are in between the Pampers and Huggies, and they only leaked a couple of times. I would try the Memer's Mark, but if we didn't like them it would seem like a huge waste of money because you can only buy them in buik quantities : (

Carrie says:

Pampers, hands down! They fit the best, they are the softest, and I have had the least amount of leakage with them!

jaime says:

i love the pampers swaddlers. i am so sad that my daughter has just about outgrown them. pampers says that cruisers are comperable. but, i disagree. for me....spending the extra dollar or two is worth saving the stains on clothing or the inconvenience of leaks. plus, i always have coupons which makes it not much more than a not so good brand. i figure my little girls bottom has to be in them for a long stretch of time every day and night. we all know what it is like to be in uncomfortable underwear!!!! :)

Folks, only two manufacturers in the US produce diapers across the nation: Proctor&Gamble and Kimberly-Clark. Wal-Mart, Target, Krogers, Albertsons negotiate with them for a version of those diapers for their chance to make more money in the sale. In any given YEAR the diapers you buy at SAM may be a KC diaper or a PG diaper. Diapers and quality change at LEAST annually. So don't put much stock in the dated reviews. I've seen the comparisons and each company will beat the other one for a while. By the way PG makes Luvs and Pampers. KC makes Huggies. White Cloud is a regional producer that can't keep up with the innovations of the other two. Those Store brands you like are contractually negotiated design changes of the Pamper/Huggies originals. Find the one that provides the best value - which will probably change by the time you child moves on to training pants. Oh, guess what! Same thing with these products too - just two national manufacturers.

I use Target brand diapers with my son and using since he was 1 month old. They work grt, never leaked and no rash. they are anly 10 cents per diaper for size 1. But they are a little stiff. I will ive parent's choie diapers a try in future.

I've always loved Pampers Swaddlers and Huggies Supreme with Cuddle Weave. Both have stretchy sides, tabs that stay on, and soft, cloth-like covers. My baby wears Size 1, so these brands have always worked best for her. I've used store brands such as Krogers Comforts, White Cloud, and Parent's Choice, and I'm not really all that impressed with them. From now on, whenever I want to buy a store brand diaper, I'm going to make sure the brand has stretchy sides and a soft, cloth-like feel. Otherwise, I'm sticking with Pampers and Huggies. Oh, and did I also mention I love Sesame Street, Elmo, and Winnie the Pooh? Still one more reason to stick with these brands if they mean anything to you. Word of caution, though: Unless you have a preemie or a low-weight, skinny newborn, don't use the newborn-size Pampers Swaddlers. They don't fit bigger babies very well, even with the stretchy sides. My poor Size 1 baby can barely breathe with these on!
