About The Cookie Diet
There are several diets that use the term "The Cookie Diet".
Dr Sanford Siegal has a diet that uses this slogan.
Smart For Life Weight Management Centers also uses the slogan to describe their "Smart Cookie".
Now there is a "Hollywood Cookie Diet", and there is a multilevel marketing company that also sells a "Cookie Diet".
Dr. Sanford Siegal, a Miami, Florida physician, is sometimes credited as being the first to widely use the term "The Cookie Diet". In fact some people refer to it as the Siegal Diet or the Siegal Cookie Diet.
However, Smart For Life Weight Management Centers, who have over 30 offices throughout the country, also use the trademark. The two are currently in a legal battle over the term. Dr Siegal is claiming a "commonlaw trademark" (meaning he used the term first but never registered it). Smart For Life actually registered it.
Both organizations originally started as physician supervised weight loss centers...Smart For Life actually was once a franchisee of Dr Siegal. Since that time Dr Siegal has begun an effort to distribute his diet cookies through pharmacies and online, while Smart For Life has reformulated the cookies and maintained their physician-supervised approach.
The physician supervised approach involves blood-work, thyroid testing, and medications where appropriate. All this sounds expensive, but most of the offices charge less than $300 for all of it. Their main goal of course is to sell you cookies.
There are several other products that also appear to be capitalizing on the popularity of the "cookie diet" concept. The "Hollywood Cookie Diet" is one, and there are others.
There has been much publicity for the "The Cookie Diet". Most of it is attributable to Dr. Siegal and the Smart For Life Weight Management Centers.
Both take the approach that Thyroid problems are often responsible for weight loss failures.
How The Cookie Diet Works
Womans World magazine once published a recipe for "Cookie Diet" cookies after interviewing Dr. Siegal, but he later claimed their recipe was not similar to his.
Patients on the Cookie Diet program eat 6 cookies per day, and a sensible dinner. Dinner being the only true meal that they consume.
The programs instruct people to drink lots of water with the cookies, which also makes them feel full. The physician supervised program often prescribes supplements to help deal with the effects of having the additional fiber in the diet, and sometimes prescription appetitite suppressants as well.
The goal of the program is to get you to subsist on a mere 800 calories per day (the average person requires approximately 2,000 to maintain their weight). With this drastic reducton in calories it's hard not to lose weight, and they claim the average loss is 10 - 12 pounds per month.
