Batman Cars or Better Known As The Batmobile
Do you have any idea how many different Batman cars there's been over the years? Do you know what types of Batman's cars have been popular over the years? I think Batman's car, aka the batmobile, is just as popular as Batman himself is in any of his tv shows and movies. And as time goes on, the batmobile changed as often as Batman does. So let's have a look at the different styles of the Batmobile. In the comics, originally the batmobile was a simple red convertible and it was called "the car", it didn't become the "batmobile" until later on. When Batman got his own comic that's when the Batmobile started getting more sleek and more gadgets were added to it as well as getting darker in color. So read on and find out what types of cars Batman has had and the types of gadgets that's been added to them.
1930 Cord
The very first Batmobile
The design of the first Batmobile that appeared in the comics was based on the 1930 Cord. The only thing on it that showed it was the Batmobile was a bat ornament on the hood.
1939 Two-Door Sedan
The Batmobile in the 1940s Comic Book
In the comic books thru-out the 40s the Batmobile was basically a late 30s 2 door sedan with the bat mask over the grill and a large fin on the roof. There was variants of the design from time to time such as the headlights being either on the front of the fender or top of it, some times there was the absence of the front or rear bumper and some times there was a light on the rooftop. One major change happened in 1944 which was the additional of the fender skirts over all 4 tires with a red strip down the side.
Batman Movies
and The Animated Batman Series
1939 Cadillac Convertible

In the 1943 series starring Lewis Wilson as Batman and Douglas Croft as Robin, the batmobile was a 1939 Cadillac Convertible that was driven by Alfred (played by William Austin), which was also Bruce Wayne's personal car. When the car was carrying Batman and Robin the top was on but when it was carrying Bruce Wayne the top was down.

In the 1949 Batman serial starring Robert Lowery as Batman and Johnny Duncan as Robin the Batmobile was a 1949 Mercury Convertible which was also Bruce Wayne's personal car just like the previous series. Because the car was heavy, it didn't take the corners very well and they ended up going thru a number of them during the series.
The Batmobile From 1950 - 1966
The Cars that were the Comic Book Batmobile Collections
The new Batmobile in 1950 resembled a Studebaker with the nose of a Chrysler Imperial inside it held a complete laboratory with cabinets, work stool and counter. The nose of it had knife edges to it so it could cut thru barriers, a searchlight on the roof that was also a bat signal protector, a plastic canopy windshield, rocket thrusters, television and radar screens. The 1952 version of the Batmobile was basically the same except the tale fin became more sleek, the color changed from black to blue and for the first time the Batman symbol was painted on it. In 1955 the Batmobile lost the laboratory on the inside and a bubble dome was created over the passengers of it. In a particular episode in comic #219, Batman and Robin went to investigate at a classic car convention and they decided they needed to blend in, for this they ended up with the 1905 Marmon complete with the Bat mask on the front, insignas painted on the doors and the Bat fin on the rear. Altho pretty much everything stayed the same as time went on the biggest change on the Batmobile was the roof. The biggest revamp of the Batmobile came in the early '60s, it became faster and smaller, more like the 2 seat roadster. The one large fin at the back was changed to two smaller ones and the bat mask on the front became a symbol further up on the hood.
1955 Lincoln Futura
the most popular Batmobile
During the '66 Batman version with Adam West and Burt Ward, the batmobile was the 1955 Lincoln Futura and the design of it was done by George Barris, who was given only 3 weeks to make the Batmobile. Barris choose the Lincoln Furtura because it already had some of the Batman design to it. In the animated version of Batman they did keep basically the same design originally as the Lincoln Futura until 1978 in Challenge of the Super Friends when they did a little revamp of it making it smaller.

Some of the gadgets to it were a nose mounted chain slicer, lasers, rockets, dash board telephone and computer, police beacon, smoke emitter and a nail spreader and the fact that it could do a 180 turn thanks to the parachutes in the back. Some things changed over the years it was on tv like the license plate and steering wheel, rear-facing camera and battering ram but the basic design was always the same.
The Batmobile From the 60s to the 90s
The Comic Book Batmobiles
During the mid to late 60s there was many different versions of the Batmobile in the comic books and also for the merchandise but the basic design of them were always based on the 1966 Batmobile, the Furtura. In 1967 one of the batmobile was based on Jaguar XKE roadster. Some of them had different features such as a solid bubble canopy, bulletproof tires, ejector seats, and an anti-booby-trap circuit. The year that Robin went away to college also saw some major changes with the Batmobile as well. It became a 2 seat coupe with bulletproof chassis and body panels. In 1970 the designer for the batmobile decided it needed to blend in more and all the Bat insignias were removed except the bat mask on the hood. Starting in 1972, in order for Batman to blend in more, the designers to use the Corvette. This car had absolutely nothing on it to resemble the batmobile, even the next years car, the Ford Mustang, had nothing to show it was the batmobile. In '73 when Batman finally made it back to television in the cartoon series, Superfriends, the Batmobile was back to the basic Furtura again. All in all during Batman's rain as the Caped Crusader, he's had close to 200 different versions of the Batmobile. Some with major changes some with small changes, some in the comic books, some in coloring books. Some on towels and some in the movies. You can see the complete History of the Batmobile in further detail.
The 1989 Batmobile
Michael Keaton's Batmobile
Then in the 1989 Michael Keaton version of Batman the batmobile was a combination of the 1930's coupes and a modern racing car. There was no more bat mask and the back fins were smaller, inside featured aircraft-like instrumentation, a passengers' side monitor, self-diagnostics system, CD recorder, and voice-command recognition system. The gadgets of Keaton's batmobile are all voice activated and the parachutes were replaced with side-mounted grappling hook launchers and a central "foot" capable of lifting the car and rotating it. Besides having machine guns and jet engines, it's also able to protect itself with the shields that covers the car and doesn't allow anyone access to it. In Batman Returns it also was able to turn itself into the Batmissile, the wheels retracted and the sides would break off.
The Glowing Batmobile
and could climb walls
Batman Forever Electronic Batmobile Vehicle with Light-Up Chassis (1995 Kenner)

In the 1995 Batman Forever, when Val Kilmer played Batman and Chris O'Donnell played Robin and the batmobile got a new look. The roof fin was taken from some of the original models but it could also be opened up into a V-shape. The also wanted to accentuate lines of the car, the engine panels, wheels, and undercarriage so they made it look like those areas glowed. Inside the car featured a rear-view monitor, system diagnostics display, and custom gauge cluster. Some of the new defense mechanisms include the ability to lock all four wheels upward, to allow for quick sideways movement and it can also climb the walls by rerouting the jet exhaust to under its front end and launching the grappling hooks.
Delahaye 165 and the Jaguar D Type
the 30 foot long Batmobile
George Clooney as Batman got himself the longest Batmobile ever made. It was a cross between the Delahye 165 and the Jaguar D Type. Like the previous Batmobile from the Kilmer Batman, this batmobile also had lights that would emphasize the sleek lines. This batmobile was also only a single seater.
New Batmobiles for the New Millenium
Well you'd think they'd change the batmobile drastically however the first batmobile was still the same basic design as the 1962 version. With a few modifications such as smaller fins, a jet engine, full roof and self-sealing tires. A few of the other batmobile designs came from such cars as Dodge Viper, TVR Speed 12, Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, Dodge Viper, Opel Speedster, 1961 Chevrolet Impala, Ford GT90, BMW Mille Miglia and the Lamborghini Reventon. Or you could always find out the details of them all at the History of the Batmobile.
Lamborghini and Hummer together
the batmobile that started it all
This is the one that was suppose to set the stage for the rest of the Batmobiles. Batman Begins with Christian Bale started Batman all over telling the story of why and how Bruce Wayne ended up becoming Batman and with the help of Lucius Fox of Wayne Enterprises, they made a totally different Batmobile that was unlike the sleek designs of previous years, the Tumbler. This one was the cross between a Lamborghini and a Hummer.
Pick Your Favorite Batmobile
Now I'm not gonna list them all here but if you think there's something better out there that's a better Batmobile, by all means drop a line in the guestbook and let everyone know what it is. Or vote for the Batmobile you think was the best one. For this poll tho I think I'll stick to the tv or big screen versions of Batman.
More of Batman's means of transportation
including the batcopter
Altho ,Batman's main means of transportation over the years was the Batmobile, he did manage to have a few other options as well. From the BatCopter to the BatJet to the BatCycle and more.

- Great idea for a lens. The first Batmobile I remember was from the TV series with Adam West, so that will always be my vision when I think of the Batmobile.
