The Bionic Woman

Jaime Sommers first appeared in a two-part episode of The Six Million Dollar Man in 1975 entitled "The Bionic Woman."

In this episode, Steve traveled to his old hometown of Ojai, California, to visit his mother and step-father and to take a vacation from his job as an OSI operative. During his visit, he rekindles his old relationship with Jaime Sommers, now one of America's top tennis players.

Jaime and Steve had been high school sweethearts.

Steve's parents, Jim and Helen Elgin became Jaime's legal guardians when Jaime was 16 years old.

Her parents had been killed in a car accident on April 16, 1966. It is found out later that they were presumably murdered and that instead of simply being the political science college professors they claimed to be, they also in fact, worked undercover for the United States government.

Jaime and Steve broke up when Steve left Ojai to go to college and later to join the Air Force and space program.

Jaime graduated from high school and went on to study at Carnegie Tech.

She studied to be become a school teacher but was also a very accomplished tennis player.

After obtaining her teaching degree, she decided to play professionally and became ranked among the top five lady pros.

It was during this time that Steve came back to Ojai. Thanks to a little match-making by his mother, Jaime and Steve rekindled their relationship.

Their happiness was short lived however, when while skydiving together Jaime's parachute ripped and she plummeted to the ground.

She suffered severe life threatening injuries in the accident. Both of her legs and right arm were crushed beyond repair. She also caused severe damage to her ear due to a severe head trauma.

Not wanting to lose the love of his life, Steve talked Oscar Goldman of the OSI into authorizing the same bionic procedure on Jaime that he himself had received two years earlier.

With the help of Dr. Rudy Wells the operation was a success and Jaime fully recovered much stronger than ever! Though in the beginning she didn't quite see it that way.

At first she felt like a freak, part robot - part human and had a hard time adjusting to her new body.

She adapted much better however when Steve let her in on his own little secret - that he was bionic too!

When Jaime is released from the hospital fully recoverd it is time for her and Steve to practice her new abilities.

It is while they are performing these super hero feats that Steve's mother happens upon them and Steve has no choice but to tell her what had happened to them both.

More in love than ever and with their bionic abilities in common, Steve proposes to Jaime.

Before the wedding could occur however, Jaime's body starts rejecting her bionic parts.
