THE BLUE GHOST TUNNEL

Idea Girl Consulting -The Blue Ghost Tunnel is located near Gate 12 of General Motors along Glendale Road, St Catharines/Merritton/Thorold, Ontario beside the 4th Welland Canal. It is also known as Merritton Tunnel, or The Grand Trunk Railway. This tunnel is said to be haunted by the ghosts of a train wreck that happened back in the early 1900s. I also think it's haunted by the 663 plus graves buried under and beside the Pondage area, Old Pump House nearby. Over 123 plus freak accidents occcured during the building of the 4th Welland Canal. Many men were either drowned or crushed. When the Lock 6 disaster happened in August of 1928, many workers claimed it was cursed by ghosts there.

My theory is because the pump house brings water to Locks 4 - 7, it was plagued by disasters over the years. In fact there were many more disasters not reported because they had no idea who the people were that died. It is recorded in several entries from engineers to local workmen who were there when they happened. Most of the accidents were not reported by the paper for fear of The Welland Ship Canal getting a reputation for being haunted by ghosts.

Here you will find videos, pictures and true stories about ghosts, blue plasma and psychic readings and investigations from the paranormal teams. I`ve added a buy books option for top teen paranormal romance, ghost stories, hauntings and DVD Best Ghost Movies - Amazon.

BLUE GHOST TUNNEL, CEMETARIES, SCREAMING TUNNEL, WELLAND CANAL

Posted May 26th, 2009 by Linda Randall

Heres some food for thought. The Blue Ghost tunnel is in St Catharines yet it's listed as Thorold/Merritton in records/GM Plant 12 is right beside the Blue Ghost Tunnel and it's classified as St Catharines/ Niagara College which is 2 minutes away on Glendale Ave is listed as Niagara On The Lake and 5 minutes away is the Screaming tunnel (up on the hill behind Niagara College) and it's listed under NIagara Falls - All in the Niagara Region.

Anglican Diocese of Niagara has a registry of the graves.

The pondage area by The Old Pump House (near the Blue Ghost Tunnel) is where over 1000 people were buried in St Peter's Cemetery ( formerly called The Old German Church.) The unmarked graves have been buried under the concrete portion and the pondage area according to archive records of personal accounts of canal workers, engineering books and Canon Frederick Charles Piper of Thorold.

Canon Frederick Charles Piper of Thorold, Ontario's - St Peter's Church and Cemetery noted in his entries in the early 1800s that there were1000 graves but only 916 were registered with people's names.

In those days people had identification tags, some were unidentified and buried in St Peter's Cemetery and listed under the unmarked graves registry of names.

Some historical newspaper report that 250 of the graves were moved to the Old Part of Lakeview Cemetery (The newer part is across the road.)

Lakeview cemetery records only reports 100 graves moved from St Peter's to the Old Part of the Cemetery giving location and names of deceased, and according to the St Catharines Museum Archives - Canon Frederick Charles Piper documented only 200 graves were moved from St Peter's Cemetery to the Old Lakeview Cemetery.

Now in 2009, according to The Standard, the Seaway claims there were no persons buried in the pondage area, yet in March/April of 2009 several graves were found and the remains removed by archeologists investigating the area. They plan to re-open their investigation in the winter of 2010 when the area is drained again.

I reported one Train accident 100 ft from The Blue Ghost Tunnel, there were over 123 documented canal workers freak deaths during the building of the 4th Welland Canal. There is many more deaths not reported because at the time the people did not have their identification tags, so they were buried in unmarked graves in several places along the Welland Canal.

Canal workers that fell into the concrete (locks) while being poured are unaccounted for but noted in the list of casualties at the St Catharines Museum - The 4th Welland Canal.

I have been doing lots of research and I share what I read about. I just found some more documents listed at The Toronto Public Library online under Jubilee History of Thorold (1878) written by John H Thompson, Thorold and Beaverdams Historical Society (Toronto Public Library)

***interesting Census of 1835, Canal Towns and Fenian Raids are in this book***

It also states they attempted to build an underground canal before 1829 but failed.

THOROLD REMAINS FOUND ON SITE OF CITY'S OLDEST CEMETARY - LAKEVIEW

THE OLD GERMAN CHURCH/ THOROLD, ONTARIO, CANADA - March 2009

ST CATHARINES STANDARD - THOROLD REMAINS FOUND
Human remains unearthed over the weekend in Thorold were found on the site of the city's first municipal cemetery.

Long before it was flooded to serve as a reservoir for the Welland Canal, the property near Lakeview Cemetery was a burial ground for some of Thorold's earliest settlers.

The remains of hundreds of Thorold settlers could still be buried in an abandoned cemetery where human bones were unearthed last weekend.

Early published reports and archival material held by the Anglican Diocese of Niagara suggest remains from only a couple of hundred of the 900 or so graves at the cemetery were relocated when the land was flooded more than 80 years ago to become a reservoir for the Welland Canal.

why the Welland Canal was built

Conquering Niagara: The Story of the Welland Canal

Combining rare archival footage with remarkable new footage of the Canal as never seen before, this riveting documentary takes viewers on a journey of discovery through its rich history. From a Jesuit monks first glimpse of the majestic Niagara Falls to a deadly battle between rival factions in the 1840s. From Fenian cross-border raids to wartime acts of sabotage. From a competition between rival nations for economic dominance of the St. Lawrence corridor, to the beneficial partnership behind the St. Lawrence Seaway. It took the fortitude of one man, William Hamilton Merrit, to overcome the natural barrier of Niagara Falls and link the heartland of a continent with the waiting markets of the world. In so doing, the Welland Canal would take its place among the greatest achievements the world has ever known.

THE LUTHERAN CHURCH - THE GERMAN CHURCH THOROLD

UP NEAR THE PUMP HOUSE

janet Carnochan was born in 1839 in Stamford, C.W, ( Canada West ) and educated in Niagara. She was the principal of the Public School for six years and teacher in the high school for twenty-two years. She was secretary of the Public Library, the oldest in Ontario, for thirty-five years. She was foundress of the Niagara Historical Society and its president until her death. She was the curator of the Memorial Museum and author of the History of Niagara and many pamphlets on local historical subjects.

The following was described by By the late Janet Carnochan in her publication "Graves and Inscriptions in the Niagara Peninsula"

In the register kept by Rev. Wm. Leeming, of Stamford and Chippawa, is often mentioned as the place of marriage, burial, or baptism, the "German Church," and here near Thorold is the graveyard, although the church no longer exists, as it was taken down to make way for the new canal.

Many of the bodies buried here were removed to the beautiful new cemetery, but the greater part of the old graveyard remains. The site is fine, undulating ground, almost hill and valley. While copying inscriptions in this city of the dead it was strange to see a vessel passing so close to us that we could hear every word spoken.

The church was built chiefly by the exertions of George Keefer, whose history is the history of the early days of Thorold, he having been the earliest settler. His body was removed with the old stone which bears the simple inscription:
"Sacred to the memory of George Keefer, born in Sussex County, colony of New Jersey, Nov. 8th, 1773, died at Thorold, June 28th, 1858, aged 84 years."
He was the director of the Welland Canal Co., and turned the first sod. In the history of Thorold are the picture£ of himself, his two wives, and fifteen children. His first wife was Catharine Lampman, and here no doubt is a memorial of an ancestor of the gifted poet Lampman, who died lately at Ottawa:
"In memory of Peter Lampman, who died in 1834, aged 86. He came from New York to this province in 1783 with his family and has resided fifty years in the township of Niagara. He was always a pious, faithful and respectable member of the German Lutheran Church."
In the marriage record of the Stamford Associate Church nearly all the licenses were granted by Robert Grant, Esq., and here is his grave:
"Sacred to the memory of Robert Grant, Esq., born at Inverness, Scotland, 16th Nov., 1776, died at Queenston, U. C., 16th May, 1838. This monument is erected by his daughter Christina, wife of Jacob Keefer, Esq., of Thorold."

Here occur the wellknown names of Ball, Clement Hoover, Seburn, Field, Ker.

Walter H. Ball died in 1822, and Jane Catharine Ball in 1818, while Henry Clement Ball, born in 1789, and Mary Ball, born in 1796, must have been born here soon after the family came, in 1782; Charity Ann Hoover was buried here in 1829, Margaret Hoover in 1826, and Jacob Ball in 1819.

March 1st., 1889 - Railway Horror - Ten Persons Killed and Thirty Injured:

A Grand Trunk Express drops through a bridge.

On Wednesday evening Thorold was thrown into consternation by a report that the fast express, which passes Merriton eastward bound without stopping about 7:40 each evening, had gone through a high bridge near St. George, which is the first station beyond Harrisburg. The wildest rumours were afloat, but the morning papers yesterday brought presumably correct reports, from which we condense :

The large iron bridge collapsed, carrying with it the latter part of the train, consisting of the dining car, a Pullman and a first-class coach. The rest of the train crossed in safety. Of those three cars two fell to the ground, namely, the dining car and the coach, while the Pullman hangs suspended from the bridge, which broke about the fourth strand from the end. The bridge is an iron trestle with stone abutments, about 300 feet long. The occupants of the two cars, which were pretty well crowded, were hurled below to a depth of 60 feet, and most of them who were not killed outright were mangled in a shocking manner.

The number of killed as far as learned is ten, while the wounded will probably reach the number of thirty.

December 7th., 1888 - Terrible Railway Smashup at Merriton:

http://www.adventuresniagara.ca/pages/gtr.shtml

Another has been added to the long list of catastrophies, more than one of them attended with loss of life, which have occured at the Merriton station of the Grand Trunk Railway. On Monday morning last, about 12:30 o'clock, as the engine of a train from the bridge, detached from its train, was taking water at the tank, the driver saw a long train of coal cars, twenty-five or thirty in number, coming down the Welland railway incline, evidently out of control. The driver at the tank undertook to get his engine out of the road, but there was no time, so he and his fireman jumped to save their lives, and in less time than it takes to write it the runaway train was upom him with such fearful force as to send his engine nearly down to the Niagara Central crossing. The engine of the runaway train was overturned, and the whole train, with an awful crash, was piled into an indescribable mass on and beside the track. The scene immediately after baffles all attempts at description. Trucks were driven into the ground nearly out of sight. The woodwork was splintered into matchwood, and the stacks of coal that were mixed through only served to make the confusion the greater.

Though the wholesale destruction of property is saddening, yet much more so is the loss of life, and this time three was the number of the human victims, all belonging to the runaway train, viz., engineer J. Williams of Niagara Falls, and old employee, 62 years of age, who leaves a widow and grown family ; fireman M. Sherry, a widower, leaving two small children ; and brakeman Allen of Hamilton. All the bodies were fearfully mutilated, and many of the bystanders were unable to stand the sight as the remains were extricated by the wreckers, a wrecking train soon being on hand.

It is said that engineer Williams lost control of his train above Thorold, and numbers of Thorold people heard the danger whistle as the train rushed past. Some of the remarks past by the railway men while working at the wreck were very suggestive, and indicated that a far greater number of accidents were very narrowly escaped than the public had any idea of.

It is supposed that the company's loss on property alone will not be covered by $50,000.

An inquest was held by coroner Goodman the same afternoon ; and after taking the evidence of a large number of witnesses, mostly railroaders, the following verdict was reached :

That the deceased, James Williams, Michael Sherry and Robert Allan, came to their death by a collision between trains Nos. 471 and 551, near Merriton, about 12:30 a.m., on December 3rd. The cause of the collision we believe to be from not having sufficient brakes on train 471 to control it : also, that the engineer did not reverse or alarm, and that the rear brakeman was inexperienced. We further find that all freight trains should be brought to a standstill above the grade at Thorold : that an additional brakeman should be provided on all freight trains descending this grade, and a special switchman be appointed to attend to the switch known as the welland Railway switch.

The Coroner, in summoning up, expressed the opinion that, apart from the loss of lives in such accidents, which were numerous at Merriton, the interest on the money lost by the company, by suck smashups, would pay the wages of extra men required on switches and trains for over 100 years.

LOCK 15

AIR DISASTER LOCK 15 THOROLD SEPT 16,1929
St. Catharines, Ont., Sept. 16, 1929-- Three of the six victims of the passenger plane crash near Lock 15 of the Welland Canal, Saturday, will be buried today.

As reported by the Daily Standard dated January 3rd 1903......

http://hamiltonparanormal.com/tunnel.html

As reported by the Daily Standard dated January 3rd 1903........

The headlines flashed across the front cover "BAD TRAIN WRECK, No.4 Express Collides with a light Mogul Near Merritton Tunnel." (Known today as the "Blue Ghost Tunnel")

"On the Grandtrunk rail line near Merritton a serious and fatal accident occurred near the Merritton Tunnel today. The accident occurred around 7:03am at a point about 100 yards from the tunnels western entrance. Engine Number 975 was an 80 ton mogul train to leave from Niagara falls at 6:00am each morning and run through to Hamilton .

Engine Number 4 express train was one of the best and fastest trains on the G.T. R. and was scheduled to arrive in Merritton at 6:28am. The Engineer's name was Duke and the fireman that manned the boiler was Abraham Desult both from Sarnia. As nearly as can be learned it was 7:03 am when the ill-fated express train passed a small telegraph station near the tunnel,

A few moments later and almost one third of a mile down the track the engine of the express train and the light mogul train met with a terrible crash. Both engines at the time of the collision were in full steam when they met head on. The accident happened on a sharp curve where both engineers could not see each other for a distance of 200ft. The estimated speed of both trains were about 22MPH at the time of the collision.

Both engineers escaped with only broken limbs and minor cuts to face and arms while Mr. Charles Horning (firemen) for the express train was killed instantly. The reporter described the condition of the body as being jammed between the boiler and tentler, his body was horribly mangled. When rescuers went to pull on the limbs of the man to try to free him they broke off. When some of the remains were taken away, his mid section was so tightly wedged between the tentler and boiler that his remaining body could not be pulled free. It was even noted that his watch on one of his arms was still working......

The other firemen (Abraham Desult) from the mogal train was smashed into the boiler of the train, and received burns to 90% of his body. He was rushed to the St.Catharines General Hospital were he died 5 hours after the accident."

The entrance to the tunnel that one can explore today was the side where the accident had happened. The trains did not collide in the tunnel as most folks had thought. It happened about 100 yards from the entrance of the tunnel just beyond the path we walk down to get to the BGT.....

The spirit of the two firemen could be part of the paranormal activity that is found at the BGT today .......

663 GRAVES IN THE PONDAGE AT THE OLD PUMP HOUSE

http://hamiltonparanormal.com/tunnel.html

At this time the cemetery was called the "Old Cemetery" formerly "The Grave Yard" formerly "St. Peters Burial Grounds" formerly " The Lutheran Burial Place" then formerly "The Old German Church Cemetery"

By the early 1920's came the final blow to the cemetery when it was decided upon to build a new canal that would be later called the Fourth Welland Canal. This would require that the area occupied by the Old Cemetery and once the site of St. Peters Church be covered by a canal pondage area.

The call went out for any persons having relatives in the Old Cemetery to arrange to have their remains moved to the new Lakeview Cemetery. Those that made claims to have their loved ones moved got underway by July 1923. This would make the cemetery 150 years old by this date. Total graves that were in the cemetery was numbered at 913 graves, the oldest one being that of a Hannah Lampton, Buried in 1793. Many of these graves were that of the United Loyalists and their entire families. The government at the time that was to perform the removal of the graves stated "Graves that were not claimed or those without markers would remain in the grave yard."

By the time all was said and done a total of 250 graves had been removed out of 913 graves, leaving a total of 663 graves that are still in the area that is now under water in the pondage area by the Blue Ghost Tunnel.

TOMBSTONE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PONDAGE NEAR BGT

http://hamiltonparanormal.com/tunnel.html

It is unbelievable to think that anyone could just flood over a grave site with bodies still buried in the ground. The old graveyard is nothing more than a watery grave site for all those who were once prominent citizens of the township of Thorold, Ontario. It was May 5th of 2008 - Written by Linda Randall April 30,2009

We had gone to see the BGT for a friends birthday, we started by looking for the path to the East Ghost Tunnel. After studying some aerial satellite shots on a computer at the library, we proceeded along the east side of the canal from the railway swing bridge by Gate 12 GM, in between locks 17 &18 is a hidden path that branches off from the Bruce Trail, we followed it down South East, East then South. We followed the lower ridge, into the dense brush (tiny path there) and across loads of slippery rocks beside the marsh land. It may be full of water during rainy seasons, it's best to go 3 days after it has been heavy rains, or it's just pure mud and difficult to walk on. We almost lost our balance several times with running shoes. I recommend wearing some decent hiking boots because the terrain is very rocky and steep in some places. Take a bottle of water with you and a compass. The brush is almost impossible to get through so you have to look for openings. In using the compass you will continue in the correct SE direction. We went there in the day time and found the East Ghost Tunnel and took some pics (unfortunately they are on my OLD cell phone). Then later that night we went to the West End of the BGT and there were several people there with digital cameras. Once in the tunnel, flashlights kept going out and batteries were dying. One girl took a pic when Harold yelled out, there's a man standing in front of you! It's a ghost. At first we thought he was joking around but when she took the picture, an old man with a very large beard appeared on her camera in the misty cloudy swirls of plasma formation. It freaked everyone out when we saw the pic, then batteries went dead. Harold started running out the door and yelled, he wants us to leave now! He was absolutely terrified of this ghost. He said it was an evil presence. Harold is blessed with a gift.. He can sense, see and feel ghosts, I on the other hand can hear and feel ghosts but can only see them on a digital camera so far. As a team were great, he sees them, i take a pic and voila, ghost material.
Now i took several pics that night and we found a ghost portal and there must have been 20 little ghost heads in this pic, with loads of orbs. It was strange seeing orbs for the first time in my life. Before that day, I really had my doubts about ghosts. Now I totally believe in them!
The worse thing is, that I took those pictures Last Year and now I can't seem to find them. I think they are on one of my 6 cell phones, that I've bought in the past 2 years. I was always trying out new gadgets and better camera's ergo the many cell phones. My newest phone has an mp3 player * no idea how to work it* and lousy camera! Don't buy the 8600 LG Chocolate phone if you want decent picks! My LG 245 was great, I didn't realize it had internet on it. I wanted a bigger screen to look at because our friend Paul had gotten an iphone and well I wanted one but couldn't afford it, so I took the next best thing. Wrong idea! Complete waste of $300 that I have ever spent on the phone. It's okay though, I got a great deal on the phone plan so I just take pics now with a digital camera (plastic lens is lousy). I'm saving up and planning to buy a better camera so I can do some serious ghost hunting in the future!
We are also looking at other sites in and around St Catharines that possibly might be haunted. I will be posting pics on here or make new sites and post the URL here.

THE MERRITTON TUNNEL

WIKIPEDIA - BLUE GHOST TUNNEL
The Merritton Tunnel, frequently referred to as the Grand Trunk Railway Tunnel and colloquially as the Blue Ghost Tunnel, is a historic landmark in the community of Thorold, Ontario, which runs under lock 18 of the former third Welland Canal (1887-1932).

Do you believe in ghosts? I never did until now. I took some pics while at the ghost tunnel. I asked the ghosts to reveal themselves so I could prove that they exist. They did. Daytime and Nighttime shots.

Definition and examples of paranormal orbs
SCIENCE OF ORBS PHOTOS
Paranormal Research Investigations (PRI) had an experimental session to photograph "orbs". Members of the group suspected that the paranormal anomalies often called orbs, which many people see in photographs, are, in fact, optical phenomena; that is, reflections from airborne particles. Group members attempted to validate this assumption by replicating orbs in photographs using materials prepared by the group.

An orb is considered "typical" when it is round, white and concentric circles are visible on the inside. Below are three photos in which "typical" orbs are pictured.

ROCHESTER GHOST SUBWAY
"I was researching the town that I'm going to college in next year," Duane Thomas Fields writes (about Rochester, New York), "and I came across the fact that the city had a subway for a time in the early 20th century. It hasn't run since 1956 and the tunnels sit abandoned today. But in researching whether there was support for modern revival, I came about a map of what the subway map could look like today, with the original line plus proposed extensions."
BEAGLE DOG VISIT THE BLUE GHOST TUNNEL
The abandoned former Grand Trunk Railway tunnel is still intact but is sealed at one end. There is a door that has been broken so access is possible. The opposite end of the tunnel is flooded and harder to access. The tunnel is a lurer of bush parties, paranormal activists, or crazy adventurers. The tunnel is inaccessible to vehicles, other than motorcycles and ATVs. It is known by many people as the "Blue Ghost Tunnel", due to sightings of a blue ghostly form that appears female, and has also been the hotspot for seeing and hearing ghosts from inside the tunnel.
PHOTOSHOP BLUE GHOST TUNNEL
Yesterday I posted an image of huge icicles inside the Grand Trunk Tunnel near Thorold. Locals call it The Blue Ghost Tunnel. (Apparently the tunnel was built near a cemetery that was flooded during the making of The Welland Canal.) I was trying to get a hand-held image of the icicles but the light level was too low. The image I got appeals to me due to its ghostly, whispy nature.
IDEAS ABOUT LIFE TODAY - ENCOUNTERS WITH GHOSTS THE BLUE GHOST TUNNEL
I have posted an article about personal encounters with ghosts and created a website about "The Blue Ghost Tunnel", "The Screaming Tunnel", and "The Ghosts of the Welland Canal." Some of these tales were shown on "Creepy Canada" the favorite TV show of most people who are into the paranormal. It is some theories, some facts, pictures of real ghosts, and orbs. You will also be able to read newspaper articles from the early 1900's about the disasters caused by these ghosts at "The Blue Ghost Tunnel" and "The Welland Canal." The Ghost Encounters and Can you Capture Ghosts and Spirits on Camera are on my site on Helium. The Blue Ghost Tunnel website is on Squidoo.
PARANORMAL PHOTO GALLERY
The wife and I went to an old cemetery and took several pictures and didn't think much of anything until I took one just out of the blue toward an old tree and headstone. When the flash went off, my wife saw a form of mist in front of the camera. Then I looked at the picture and to my surprise this is what we got. There is a red orb with a tail in the middle of the picture. As I took the picture, there was a chill that went through my whole body. This is one of the first times we went out and from now it will not be the last.
GHOST VILLAGE
I can tell you, true spirit orbs have appeared in many different colors. But, as with most colored orb pictures, they can be pretty easily explained, like what krc offered. If you can post he picture, we would like to take a look at it. Try posting it in the spiritography section, and I am sure you will get many responses.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ENERGIES

MAY 9, 2009 Written By: Linda Randall

People have told me that there are ghost portals and orbs that are blue and red are negative/angry energy. This means they were murdered, or died before their time (a young age). I'm still trying to find information about it on Google and I haven't had much luck. If you have anything to share post it here. Thanks.

AMERICAN FOLKLORE SCREAMING TUNNEL ONTARIO
There is a tunnel under the old railroad tracks just to the west of the Queen Elizabeth Way in Niagara Falls. It is known locally as the Screaming Tunnel. A path wanders through the tunnel and then up to an empty field on the hill. But the field was not always empty.
