The Boleyn Girls

Almost 500 years later, the Boleyn Girls are hot again!

Sisters Mary and Anne Boleyn were both deeply involved with King Henry VIII, and the Boleyn family was a major influence at the beginning of the Reformation in England.

These two fascinating women are in the spotlight again, nearly 500 years later, thanks to Phillippa Gregory's wildly popular book of historical fiction, now made into a theatrical movie: The Other Boleyn Girl.

Genealogy.com Magazine: Mary Boleyn's Carey Children: Offspring of Henry VIII?
Examines the chronology of Mary's affair with Henry VIII, and the birth of her two children. Although it was never publically acknowledged that Mary's two children were Henry's, it is widely thought that at least Henry Carey (later, Lord Nunston), if not both children, were begat by the King.

Flickr Group: Anne Boleyn: ?The Moost Happi?
A Flickr group about the life of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second Queen Consort. A place to post images of Anne throughout the ages and all items, places and persons associated with her. The images reflect Anne's life, her journey and her personality. All types of images are here ? from the traditional well known ones to the more controversial and creative.

Anne, who was also Marquis of Pembroke in her own right (created so in 1532) was perhaps the most controversial Queen Consort in English history. As her biographer Eric Ives notes, Anne was ?sharp, assertive, subtle calculating, vindictive, a power dresser and a power player'. To put it more simply, she was a remarkable woman with many qualities along with the well known (and sometimes unfairly attributed) failures.

Your thoughts on the Boleyn Girls....

Did you know much about them before The Other Boleyn Girl? Do you enjoy historical fiction, or are you more of a "just the facts" type of person?

Interesting resource on the Boleyn sisters and their home. I very much enjoyed the novel though I hear the film did not stay true to the facts. The TV dramatisation stuck much more closely to the book plot and was beautifully acted too.

I do enjoy historical fiction very much! But not when it bends known facts like The Other Boleyn Girl does. Anne was in France for many years, all during Mary's time with Henry; their affair was over long before Anne returned from France; there were MANY "other women" in Henry's life, before, between, and after Mary and Anne. True that a lot is not known about Anne and even less about Mary, but don't be so loose with the few facts we DO know! ... but that's just my gripe. :-D You did a nice job on this lens, 5*!
