The Chaser

If you've never heard of the comedy group called The Chaser, then you've got a bit of catching up to do! As their motto says, they've been "striving for mediocrity in a world of excellence since 1999".

This lens contains links, videos and information to help you find some great Chaser material on the net, and get up to speed with all the latest Chaser news!

A brief history of The Chaser

The members of this Australian comedy group started out publishing a satirical newspaper called "The Chaser" in 1999 when they were still at university. The paper was sold in Australia for a number of years, but the print version has now been replaced by their website (see RSS feed below).

Chaser Newspaper fan Andrew Denton helped the team get into television, and acted as executive producer for their first show The Election Chaser in 2001. The show covered the Australian Federal Election of that year, and their relative anonymity at the time allowed them to take many politicians by surprise with their stunts.

Two series of the spoof cable news show CNNNN were to follow in 2002 and 2003, and in 2004 they had another election special called The Chaser Decides.

Members of The Chaser team have also worked on radio. Their first radio gig was on Triple M, then Chris Taylor and Craig Reucassel had an afternoon drive show called Today Today on Triple J for two years (2004-2005).

In 2005 their television work was minimal, however they did help break new technological ground with the Chaser News Alerts. These short programs could only be viewed online, on mobile phones and on the ABC's digital channel, ABC2.

The show that really brought The Chaser mainstream success was The Chaser's War on Everything. The first series was shown in 2006, however it was the second series in 2007 that gained national and international attention for the in/famous "APEC stunt".

Video highlights of each of the Chaser's TV shows are available on the internet. See the youtube section below, or the links section for the official ABC websites which still contain video highlights.

The Chaser are currently touring a stage show around Australia called The Chaser's Age of Terror Variety Hour. For tour dates see the Chaser website (link and RSS feed below).
