The Story...

With Superman over-powering most of his villains, the DC comics writers decided he needed a challenge. Enter Doomsday. For the first time, Superman must face an opponent so powerful, the battle ends with the ultimate sacrifice for Earth.

How It Begins...

The Doomsday monster is quickly introduced without any background explanation. His main mission, Kill. He soon forms a path of destruction, destroying everything from trees, to animals, to humans. It is not long before the Justice League of America finds out about the destruction path. The Justice League quickly heads over to try to stop Doomsday. In a quick, but brutal, battle...the Justice League is defeated, most members left critically injured.

Enter Superman...

With the Justice League defeated, Doomsday heads directly to Metropolis. By this time, the media has started covering the Doomsday story. Superman, who is on a talk show while the mayhem is happening, sees the story on a monitor and promptly heads over to stop Doomsday.

The Battle...

Doomsday lands the first punch on Superman, knocking the wind out of him. Superman says that's the hardest he has ever been hit. Superman fights back, but realizes no matter how hard he punches or hits Doomsday, it does not phase him. The blows Superman are taking is wearing him down. Doomsday is relentless. The only motivation the monster has is to keep fighting until completely destroying his opponent. The battles rages on through the heart of Metropolis. Everyone watches as a battle of epic proportions takes place. Punch after punch, hit after hit, shock waves are sent through the city. With Superman getting tired and Doomsday seemingly unhurt, Superman decides it is time to put and end to the battle...even if it takes his own life.

The Death...

As Superman becomes weaker, he continues to push in a frail attempt to stop Doomsday. The battles continues to rage on as crowds of spectators have gathered to watch. Included in the crowd of spectators is Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane. Superman now fears the spectators are in danger and decides to end the battle. With a last ditch effort, Doomsday and Superman strike each other with a final blow that sends both Superman and Doomsday to the ground. Lois Lane rushes over to Superman to see if he is alright, but as she talks to him, he fades...giving his life in the ultimate sacrifice to protect Earth from Doomsday.

Please Read or Watch...

I hope everyone enjoyed the summarized story of the Death of Superman. This is only the tip of the iceberg. I have been a Superman fan for as long as I can remember. I finally got the opportunity to read this story arc and I was truly amazed. I encourage everyone to pick up a copy of the graphic novel, as linked above and also if graphic novels aren't your thing, watch the recently released Death of Superman animated movie from DC Comics, also linked above.
