Bible Study Changes Our Character

Bible study is the second most crucial part of our Christian lives after prayer. What we believe about the bible will shape the way we view Jesus Christ. In 1 Peter 3:15 we are told to, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." Our faith is our answer and our faith is made stronger through prayer and bible study.

1st Peter 2Says this, 1Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Our pure spiritual milk comes from the study of God's word. We grow through bible study through hearing the word preached or taught and through our own in depth study. Peter implores those who read God's word to crave that milk. To want it like it is the only nourishment you will ever have.

How Do We Study The BiBle

The simplest way to begin studying the bible is to just read it. Reading five chapters per day will get you through the bible in less than a year. In fact, it will only take you around 80 hours to read the bible through at all. How do I know how long it take? Because that is how long my audio bible is.

Try this method. Don't start at Genesis and try to read through it. Most people I have spoken with that did try this method said they made it to Leviticus and decided it was not for them. Read some from the Old Testament and Some from the New. If you are reading five chapters per day then read two Old testament, Two New Testament and one from the Psalms, or Proverbs. I want you to remember on important fact. This is the word of God. Remember that the next time you begin to read Leviticus. The God of the universe gave us a text that even in the most repetitive books we can see His plan of salvation being worked out.

Another way you can begin your study is to buy an audio bible. I listen to mine in the car. I use it also with the books I am studying deeper. As I hear the passages over and over they become ingrained in my mind. This is a way of transformational study. When we begin to learn, not just read, large parts of scripture we begin to see our lives changed.

Bible Commentaries and Dictionaries

When you begin to dig deeper and want to see what others say about the scripture you need to invest in a couple of items. First would be just a bible dictionary. A dictionary will help you with tough words that are easy for interpreters to understand but normal humans need help with. It will also give you insight into traditions of the day so you can read in context with what was going on. On this same scale would be a bible handbook it will give you layout and overall themes for the section you are studying.

Next would be a commentary. The larger ones have at least one volume per book of the bible and some have two or three volumes for each book. You need to know what you are looking for when you get a commentary. I would put the Interpreters Commentary more to the left of center or more liberal in its view. The Expositors Commentary would be more center-right or conservative. I have both because I want to know what both sides say. Either way they will add to your learning experience.

Finally I would suggest a concordance. A concordance gives you the English word used in the sentence by the translators. It then gives you a reference number to look up the Greek or Hebrew word so you can see haw many English words that one word can be translated into. I put this lower on the scale because this is intense study. If you are not writing a sermon or paper on the text I don't think you need this. But if you really want to see where the translators were coming from this is the way to go.

Bible Study Helps

The two books I started this list with are two top quality guides to bible study. They take you through the each genre of writing so you can understand what that type of writing says about the period it was written in. They then help you transfer that scripture into today and help you apply it to your life.

If you know of other book like these please feel free to add them to the list.
