Determined Young Woman Changes Punk Rock To Suit Her Needs And The Distillers Are Born

At 16 years old when Bree Leslie Pucilowski passed a distillery while traveling by train from Geelong to Melbourne, she read their sign, "The Distillers" which was painted upon the broad face of the building. She remembers pausing to consider what a great name that would make for a band. Years later, a young woman who now called Brody Dalle shared this story with the Greg Smith of Thrasher Magazine during an interview discussing her band The Distillers.

So was the origin of a hardcore punk rock band that was actively performing from 1998-2006. Dalle was the forerunner for the bands creation in 1998, playing guitar, singing and personally writing or co-writing all of the songs on the band's three albums.

In its original creation, The Distillers were comprised of Dalle, Tony Bradley on guitar and Ryan Sinn on bass. Band members also included Rose Casper, Kim Fuelleman and Matt Young. Over the eight years of The Distillers existence, there were many different members of the band, including Andy Granelli who played the drums, Rose Mazzola who played back-up guitar and vocals, Kim Chi who played bass and Mat Young.

The Distillers first recording contract was with the Epitaph Records label, Hellcat. This self-titled album, The Distillers" was produced in 2000. A monumental moment for the band also proved to be an important success in Dalle's life as well; she met Tim Armstrong who ran the Hellcat label and later became his wife. This marriage was short lived and within two years the two divorced. With the divorce came the separation from the Hellcat Label.

During the bands eight year career, they worked with three different labels; Sire Records, Epitaph Records and Hellcat Records. When the Distillers released their first album in 2000, the self-titled "The Distillers" was compared to a mainstream popular band, "Hole". This positive reaction to the bands first album led many to believe that they were on their way up.

However, when the band returned to the studio to create their second album, the entire lineup had changed with the exception of Brody Dalle and Tony Bradley. The second album, Sing Sing Death House showcased two singles; "The Young Crazed Peeling" and "City of Angels". All three singles from their second album were released in 2002.

In 2003 the band released a third album and from that album three singles were released; "Drain The Blood", "The Hunger" and "Beat Your Heart Out". The first two singles were released in 2003 and the third, "Beat Your Heart Out" was released in 2004.

In the transition, The Distillers signed Ryan Sinn to play bass and Andy Outbreak to play the drums. The new collection of artists recorded the second Distillers album, Sin Sing Death House that was released in 2002. This album had many quality recordings and began to gain public exposure and appreciation.

When the band left the Hellcat label, they signed with Sire records and recorded their third and final album, Coral Fang, which was released in October 2003. This album was well received by the public, but for many original fans, Dalle's revised performance and style did not feel like traditional punk and "Distillers" music style. During this year, The Distillers were one of the many bands that were invited to play at Lallapalooza.

In 2003 Dalle's marriage to Armstrong broke up. During that same year, she met Josh Homme and the two married. In January of 2006 she and Homme welcomed the arrival of their first child, Camille Harley Homme.

Officially the Distillers have disbanded and are no longer recording albums as a band. However, a quick visit to the Distillers Web site showed an announcement that mentions a new band with Dalle and Bradly entitled Spinnerette.

"Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
